Normally I wouldn't cover these type of training matches, but the mid-season friendly against AIK's
feeder-club Akropolis IF on Wednesday is of special interest. The match will see the a non-official
AIK debut for exciting new Brazilian signing Antonio Flavio.
The game will be played in a rather unusual location in the northern Stockholm suburb of Akalla.
In the furious neverending November rain, Fulham made one mistake and lost the game. James
McFadden, a quality player in an average Birmingham side, clipped a ball over the Fulham back four
to Lee Bowyer, Bowyer flipped the ball over Mark Schwarzer, and the ball nestled in the net.
1-0. Bowyer was clean through because only three of the Fulham back four pushed up at the same
time, Brede Hangeland delaying for a split second that ruined everything.
It's time for yet another match against a Gothenburg team. This time AIK has the questionable
pleasure of traveling to Sweden's backside to meet up with GAIS. We usually like to refer to IFK
Göteborg as the herrings, which is a derision based on the fact that Gothenburg is
something of a fishing metropolis.
It's been six long weeks since AIK last played a game in Allsvenskan. Back then the derby against
Hammarby provided the perfect way to sum up the spring season. Another 1-0 victory after yet
another spirited AIK performance. Now, at last, we enter the fall season with a perfect match to
kick off proceedings.
A great majority of the football world has grown used to laughing off Arsene
Wenger's dramatic remarks over major incidents in recent years. This is precisely why the
Arsenal manager was largely ignored when he labeled the accusations over
Gunners striker Eduardo's recent "dive" against
Celtic as a "witch-hunt".
