Before the season started Mr Wenger OBE said this would be the closest Premiership title race
for years.
Yet Abramovich's chequebook was beginning to prove him wrong.
But ‘wow' what a day we had yesterday. Man City the draw kings drew, The top 4 Spuds lost, The
Bancrupts from Salford lost even with the scouse version of Jacques Cousteau in the team .
Ever since I started following soccer closely, I've been intrigued by the varied opinions on how
best to develop young talent. College or team academies? Better coaching. Everyone has their own
ideas on the best methods. Fans of MLS, in particular, have been very vocal in their calls for
academies like 'they have in Europe', as if something similar could be achieved with a snap of the
fingers and be up and running in a year or two.
Did you ever wonder what factors were important to a college prospect selecting a school? For
Akron freshman goalkeeper David Meves, it was the feel he got from the players and coaches that
created the atmosphere that made him choose to play for Caleb Porter and the Zips.
Meves also considered Indiana, Wake Forest and UCLA during the recruiting process before
selecting UA.
Well, crap. Two points dropped, and frankly, it very easily could have been 3. Aside from one
stretch in the first-half, we really looked bad all night. Which is not to take anything away from
Burnley. The fact is that the difference in motivation and desire between the two sides was so
clearly apparent, and Burnley went out played their butts off for their point.
We did expect the lads to rock this match, which kind of makes it all the more dejecting that on
the contrary, they didn't really show up. Especially in the beginning. Props to Xerez for giving
one hell of a performance and exceeding the Barca boys in that they actually played like they meant
it.
The first half was pretty mucky for us, with slow passing and movement and a generally sleepy
atmosphere.
Thanks to all of you who were able to make it out to the watch party today at 810 Zone on the
Plaza. It was a great atmosphere for the World Cup Draw, and the Wizards hope you all had fun and
hopefully were lucky enough to win one of the many giveaways.
Here are some photos from the event:
Two goals from Bambang Pamungkas, his first a sweet finish early first half and the second a pen in
the second half but most of the action was off the field.
Lebak Bulus Stadium may only hold 12,500 and it may have three open terraces but when you have at
least 98% of the crowd signing non stop it generates some atmosphere believe you me.
I have had Robert Pirsig's book on my 'to do list' for some time. Recently, I got time to read it.
I had a lot of expectations. To be honest I thought it would be uplifting like Herman Hesse's
'Siddhartha' or Thich Nhat Hanh's 'Fragrant Palm Leaves' (book I recommend to any avid reader
feeling the need for new ways of living).
Living the dream
Fancy going to see the Boca Juniors v River Plate Superclásico in Argentina? Of course you do.
It's the one match every football fan must see before they die. Well, how about seeing that match
and then staying on in Argentina to capture loads more fanatical fan behaviour on film before
moving onto Brazil, South Korea, Serbia and pretty the rest of the free world watching football -
sounds alright doesn't it!
The Carling Cup campaign might be over but the youth experiment continues. I don't know about
others, but I really enjoy these games. The expectations from these games are not really low but
different. Once you take out the importance of the result from a game, the sheer pleasure from the
football increase manifold.
Hello and welcome to the initial installment of The State of the States, a monthly
column that will highlight some of the biggest stories currently making the rounds in American
Soccer and identify what to look for in the month ahead. This time around, we'll discuss Real Salt
Lake's victory in MLS Cup, the US National Team's injury woes, and the lower-division spat between
the USL and the newly-formed NASL.
Wednesday looks even worse after this pulsating clash between two teams rippling in ability and
passion, the atmosphere matched the quality of the game and of the football, and ultimately we
easily deserved the point against the best side in the Championship. The start may have been Black
and White, but the end was Red [.
Anyone who knows me knows I love to travel to Europe to scout and do professional development.
Let's face it, there's a lot we can learn by going over there and seeing how training is done and
what the atmosphere is like. Not that there's anything wrong with American training methods per se,
but you can always learn more, you can always improve, and a lot of Western European teams are at
the place we want to be.
The title could be debated, with a number of names in consideration - but if you were going to
start a debate on 'the most important man in football history', Bill Shankly would have to be in
the conversation.
...I mentioned that he had changed the face of world football. Some people may have thought that
was a slight exaggeration, but I think it is a fair assessment of the impact this man has had on
the game.
Football without fans is like going on the road with Rafa Benetiz. Pointless.
Going into this game Arema were severly depleted with leading scorer Noh Alam Shah suspended,
Muhamed Riduan benched as was Pierre Njanka. So you could say they were not unhappy with the point
they took out of the game.
Interview with Pipat Thongkaya
The Jakmania - Mustafic Fahruddin was blown away by the atmosphere in this game while Baihakki
Kaizan was the last to leave the field over the 2-0 victory as he soaked up the atmosphere
Late goals, fine football and a fiery atmosphere capped off an amazing night as FC Barcelona
notched up their sixth piece of silverware this year (Club World Cup, Primera Division, UEFA
Champions League, Copa del Rey and European and Spanish Super Cup titles), a feat never
accomplished by any team. They .
It's one of the hottest atmosphere's in Indonesian football with a hatred that rivals anything that
Europe can throw up. Away fans don't travel, if they do they keep quiet, while the visiting team
often departs in an armoured personnel carrier.
This season's first meeting between these two rivals takes place on 9 January and already officials
have said the Jalak Harupat Stadium, Persib's home stadium, cannot be used.
Up until about the 45th minute of the match, Boxing Day was a great day.
'The atmosphere in the first half was the best I have even experienced at a
match.'
I woke up to poring rain and my wife asking me whether I was 'really going down there in this?' Oh
yes I was.
