Is American football "hate" of soccer overblown?
One of the comments on my piece helped shed some light on the issue for me. In fact, the comment
suggested that it is not in fact American football haters, but bitter soccer fans, that are at the
center of the problem.
I admit it, as I re-read my article, I did come across sounding pretty damned sanctimonious.
Earlier this week, prior to the U.S. Women's U-20 team qualifying for the upcoming U-20 World Cup,
defender/midfielder Lauren Fowlkes chatted with Hillcrest Road. The local product (Lee's Summit
native and St. Theresa's graduate) talked about the trip to Mexico, her future plans (including WPS
and the U.
I saw a headline this morning that said something about Toronto FC fans protesting at the
upcoming All Star game. We know the All Star game is taking place at BMO field - so why would
TFC fans be planning to protest? My first thought was that they didn't get any players into
the MLS All Star first XI even though TFC always has a lot of players high in the fan voting.
Talk about baptism by fire. The word out of Murray Park --and the mouth of Walter Smith himself--
is that Maurice Edu is expected to make his Rangers debut in this weekend's Old Firm match vs.
Celtic. Suddenly, that oft-discussed Toronto atmosphere seems like child's play.
The Mail and Telegraph are both reporting today that Mike Ashley is very likely to sell Newcastle
United, and in the short term. Xu Rongmao - Chairman of the Shimao Group With the Newcastle fans so
against the current regime, it's difficult to see how they can carry on, in the atmosphere of hate
that surrounds Newcastle [.
The atmosphere was one of a kind, with 22,453 fans in attendance for both team's first Superliga
match. As the announcer announced the starting lineups, the jars of the song and drum
reverberated through your heart. The teams walked out onto the field to a heavy round of
cheers and applause, and the game began.
New Hertha Berlin signing Andriy Voronin is excited by the prospect of playing in the Bundesliga
after joining on loan from Liverpool.
The Ukraine striker was a deadline-day arrival from Anfield and is looking forward a second stint
in Germany having plied his trade there for 12 years before moving to Merseyside in the summer of
2007.
Millson of the Globe and Mail is reporting that Toronto is about to get Chad Barrett from Chicago
Fire in return for Brian McBride. He also suggests that a trade for Cunningham is in
discussion.
The word on Barrett is not very positive, but can he miss more chances than Jeff Cunningham has ?
This Saturday's Malaysia Cup final pits Selangor v Kedah at the Bukit Jalil Stadium. It also sees
the final games in Malaysia for players like Marlon Alex James, Bernard Huggins and Frank Seator
because next season sees no foreign players allowed.
Kedah have their second consecutive treble on their minds while Selangor have won this prestigious
more than any other side.
There was a recent thread on the Drogheda United forum about how deep you should bury a dog. I
shudder to think what state the deceased animal was in as the forum member waited for his answer.
Maybe it was in the freezer. Maybe the dog wasn't dead yet. Either way there was no debate [...]
The Only Time Will Tell Tailgating Crew was it again Sunday. The Crew braved high 90 degree temperatures for the United States v. Argentina soccer game and the atmosphere and the game did not disappoint.
US Soccer is pulling out all stops for new fans including segways.
>The love affair with the Argentine National Team starts at a young age
The Deuce Fan Club, see Landon you can go to England and be a big star.
Watching the game between Chicago fire at CD Chivas USA, last night, we were struck by what seemed
like yet another increase in the production value of the broadcast. From the pre-game show to the
slightly higher field of view and the sideline camera angles, everything just looked much better
than at the start of the season.
The first news of Monday Transfer Madness comes to us courtesy of an anonymous MLSR reader.
It appears the Peruvian midfielder and West Ham player that turned down Toronto FC over concerns
about its artificial pitch is going to sign with the LA Galaxy.
According to this article:
"Luego de diez temporadas en la Liga Premier, el volante peruano dejaría el fútbol
de Inglaterra para dar el salto a Estados Unidos y jugar en la MLS
Por estos días Nolberto Solano goza del verano norteamericano, quizá para ir entrando en
ambiente, ya que en las próximas semanas Estados Unidos podría convertirse en el nuevo
país de residencia del volante peruano si es que se llega a concretar su fichaje por Los
Ángeles Galaxy de la Major League Soccer (MLS).
Should the US qualify for its sixth straight World Cup in about eighteen months' time, the team may point to last night's entertaining and at times electrifying scoreless draw at a packed Giants Stadium as the shot of confidence needed to conquer CONCACAF.
Note only did the Yanks battle toe-to-toe with the world top-ranked Argentineans, but strong individual performances from Tim Howard (who stood on his head to keep a clean sheet), Landon Donovan (in his 100th US appearance) and DaMarcus Beasley (his best game since returning from a long injury) should carry the US past through the fall qualifying sequence with ease.
Wow! What a weekend of great football and – oh by the way - what a difference a few days off
from blogging will do to your numbers!
The great football I'm talking about was a long way from the Camp Nou or Old Trafford – in
fact, the pitch where I spent hours watching some fantastic football was about 15 miles from my
house.
Yes, Manchester City striker Robinho has today claimed he has not peaked yet. The Brazilian
international made a shock move to Eastlands on transfer deadline day and has since proven a
massive hit in the Premier League scoring two goals in two games.
The former Real Madrid striker told the Daily Star : "In a few weeks' time fans in England
will start to see the real Robinho, I have already noticed at City there is a far better atmosphere
in the dressing room then we had at Real Madrid.
Bohs fans at last season's FAI cup Semi-Final (Photo by Dean Taffe) The scenes at Tolka last Friday
on the Ballybough end with the Bohs hardcore jumping up and down, singing and waving scarves in the
air made me think about the Shed at Dalymount. Its famed glory days were of course before my time
but [.
When the season kicked off one thing that I was looking forward to was those long distance away
trips. Due to the fall of the fixtures however, along with a particularly nasty infection hitting
me at a most inopportune time, so far I've had to make do with the opening day's trip to Galway.
Yesterday [.
Since I've spent so much time putting together this gallery, I wanted to make sure you guys knew it was out there. It's a collection of photos that work to capture the incredible atmosphere surrounding the European Championships in Austria...
Well, the crowd was incredible. We fell 3-0 tonight to Columbus on goals from Marshall and Moreno
(2). To all of you out at the park, a wholehearted, THANK YOU. The stands were packed, you were
loud, and it was an excellent atmosphere. The new Ink Pavilion kicked off behind the Piojo banner
in centerfield, and was a success.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced today that two more teams will be added by 2011, bringing
the number in the league up to 18.
Ownership groups and/or markets have until Oct. 15 to apply. MLS will make a decision on the
chosen pair in either the last quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2009.
We all knew it was a pretty poor performance, but hey it was his debut and even the mighty Berbs
didn't score on his debut. Poor Roman, he's probably not even met half the squad yet, let alone
played football with them.
So all things considered it was refreshing to hear his own honest appraisal of the game.
We are introducing a new feature we are calling "10 v 11" where MLSR writers will have
ten random questions for eleven MLS players.
The first of those who fielded questions from us is New England's midfield general Shalrie
Joseph.
Here are his candid answers courtesy of MLSR and ShalrieJoseph.
The Huddersfield Town Season Ticket offer is now over. It is a special offer to celebrate the club's 100 year anniversary. Prices started at £100. The final number of purchased tickets is 16123. Sean Jarvis, former Latics and current Director of Business Development at Huddersfield Town is said "We're absolutely delighted".
In a team that is notorious for imploding and infighting, it is reassuring to hear today from
Netherlands midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who believes that the team is experiencing an unprecedented
atmosphere of solidarity.
"We have the possibility to win Euro 2008 and we all feel that we can do it.
Or is it more weird? I don't know what it is grammatically, all I know is that it's getting even
crazier each day.
Today we have some strange statements made by Ade himself, the first of which is:
"You can see people changing clubs because of money, because they want a change of
atmosphere or to get their names in the big leagues.
DC United won its fourth straight match, topping the LA Galaxy in a hot and humid midday
game, 4-1.
Emilio scored two goals and had one assist in the win.
Beckham got a mixed reaction from the Washington fans but says he's used to it.
"I've had a lot worse, but you know that's part of the game," said David Beckham.
One of the highlights for me of the A-league has been the support and crowds that have been
attracted to the league. Three years ago just about nobody would have foreseen that Melbourne
Victory would be averaging 26,000 to home games and have a membership of 21,000.
It is with deep sadness then that I read my membership renewal form for this year.
Ed.'s Note: The match report is from Saturday night's North American SuperLiga Group A match, but
technical difficulties delayed the posting of the report. The atmosphere at D.C. United's RFK
Stadium was one of a kind, with 22,453 fans in attendance for the teams' first SuperLiga match. As
the announcer announced the starting lineups, the [.
Due to a limited budget, I haven't made it to too many United games this year, but this was a game
that I feel was probably much better to watch in person than on tv. Good atmosphere at RFK as
always (and the lights stayed on!), but it seemed like less attendance than usual. All in all, a
pretty exciting game, including a frantic final 10 minutes that had my usually quiet section
standing throughout.
Okay, so beating West Ham -- a team that barely finished in the top half of the Premiership table
-- isn't as exciting as, say, Chelsea or Celtic.
But it's still good to see.
Overall the whole day appeared to be a success. A lot of exciting action and goals with the stars
in the forefront.
I won't trouble you guys will all the details in the front of the release we just sent, since you
already know that we're fighting for our playoff lives, as are the Galaxy. I also won't try to tell
you who David Beckham is or that he played Wednesday as England crushed Croatia 4-1 on the road.
Here, though are quotes from him and Jimmy about the game Saturday.
Rafael Benitez is hopeful a tactical switch off the field of play will help Liverpool generate an
atmosphere to send shivers down the spines of any side visiting Anfield this season.
The Reds boss believes the introduction of the Barclays Premier League anthem has curbed the impact
of the club's anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' and feels that asking fans to sing the famous song
just prior to kick-off will help give his side a psychological edge.
Saturday's improved performance versus West Brom led the majority of The Valley faithful to return
home in a justified better mood. The debut of Youga, the balance him and Basey provided down the
left, coupled with the attacking energy Moutaoakil provided down the right led to an improved
thrust to the side.
It was Brett Emerton's day. Two goals and Qatar's only answer was aggression. He is tall and strong
and the further forward he gets - away from his original defender role - the better the Socceroos
look. He has eclipsed Harry Kewell who appears a little out muscled in the lone striker role. Yet
Asian teams have learned to take no risks with Harry and foul him if necessary.
So, Mr. Truta of 105.1 Jack FM stuck around after practice to knock the ball around with KZ and
Cherryh Butler, face of Ink Magazine. Hillcrest Road caught up with him afterward for a quick
question/answer session about the experience, the upcoming media game and his time in the Cauldron
last weekend.
Major League Soccer's All-Star squad will face off against Premiership club West Ham United on July
24th from Toronto, Canada. BMO Field is home to second-year franchise Toronto FC. The
atmosphere will be electric as home fans and privileged ticket holders cheer on the best
of MLS. Below follows an in-depth look at some of the key players [.
Someone is working on a U.S. Soccer project (it's not the federation, it's a scholarly venture),
focusing on the men's team and sent me a list of questions, wanting my perspective. I know what I
think, and usually people don't have to ask twice for my opinion, but I'm well aware that there's a
world of different thoughts out there.
To everyone that came out yesterday, a huge THANK YOU. Though we didn't get a victory, the
atmosphere was outstanding. Chicago supporters forced The Cauldron to be as loud and boisterous as
ever. I sat outside the press box for most of the match and enjoyed the sights and sounds,
including this view currently up at kcwizards.
Lazio coach Delio Rossi is preparing his squad for their friendly against Liverpool, but he insists
that the Biancocelesti cannot use these types of matches to gauge if the team is ready to return to
European competition.
Lazio and Liverpool will face off at Anfield today in what many expect will be a physical match-up.
