As expected Lionel Messi won this year's Ballon d'Or to be crowned as the best player in Europe. It
was an expected result with a record margin of victory. Cristiano Ronaldo finished second with 233
points while Lionel messi amased a record 473 points. Xavi received 170 points finishing third
while Iniesta received 149 points finishing fourth.
Hurricane Clásico passed through the shores of Spain with a FC Barcelona win, and now normalcy
can somewhat return to La Liga. The two most important matches in terms of the championship race
are 5th place Deportivo La Coruña vs. league leaders FC Barcelona and 8th place Athletic Bilbao
vs.
Who can forget the last time we played Everton. Under much different circumstances and compared to
events of the last 10 days, much happier times. Today is a chance for Chelsea to get their form
back on track after a nightmare 10 days with losing on pens to Blackburn, losing away at City and
then drawing at home to APOEL.
Looking at that
Champions League draw, Real Madrid,
Barcelona and Sevilla must be
licking their lips. None of them were pitted against any of the English sides, and even dangerous
teams such as Bayern Munich, Fiorentina and Inter Milan have been avoided. Perhaps the toughest tie
is that of
Real Madrid, who will face
Karim Benzemas old team, Lyon, who effectively
knocked out Liverpool along with Fiorentina.
In the last few years, the top six teams have distanced themselves from the rest of La Liga.
Real Madrid and FC Barcelona represent the top two, and Villarreal, Atlético Madrid, Sevilla, and
Valencia compete for the next four places. Atlético Madrid continues their bumbling start into
the Christmas break, and Villarreal picked themselves up from a shocking beginning, but a Champions
League spot may be a bridge too far.
