Few foreign players have adapted better - or as quickly - to the unique demands of top-flight
football in England than Fernando Torres. In his first season, after arriving at Liverpool 12
months ago, he scored 33 goals in all competitions.
Yet as the prolific Spain striker ponders how he can improve next season, having set the bar so
high, he is swift to pay tribute to the part that Rafael Benítez played in his rapid and
spectacular progress.
Four clubs surprised the pundits by pulling off impressive victories against higher ranked
outfits. Based on current rankings:
- Anorthosis Famagusta (ranked 193) defeated Olympiacos (ranked 44)
- FC BATE Borisov (unranked) defeated Levski Sofia (ranked 80)
- Atlético Madrid (ranked 67) defeated Schalke 04 (ranked 22)
- Dynamo Kyiv (ranked 74) defeated Spartak Moscow (ranked 61)
FC BATE from Belarus and Anorthosis from Cyprus are the first clubs from their perspective
countries to ever qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, really. Sergio Agüero was man of the match as Atlético de Madrid
comfortably beat Deportivo La Coruña 3-0 in A Coruña, setting up two and scoring the second.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has admitted that CF Valencia and Spain forward David Villa is top
of his list of potential targets this summer after England striker Peter Crouch's transfer to
Portsmouth.
26-year-old Villa excelled for Spain in the Euro 2008 Finals and, despite picking up an injury,
scored four goals in the tournament to help Spain's La Furia Roja win their first major trophy in
44 years.
So the schedule for the new season is out ...
Looks like Unai Emery's boys will have a tough go at it near the end of the season, when many of
Spain's top clubs will be meeting Los Che for the right to carry the La Liga Championship
in their back pocket.
This being the last season at the current Mestalla, the final game of the season takes on more
meaning, against Athletic Bilbao the weekend of May 31st.

Germán Denis has heard there are fewer dogs in Madrid than there are in Mar del Plata, clearly.
The Independiente marksman, who for a long time during the Apertura looked like he was going to
beat Martín Palermo's record of 20 goals in a single short tournament campaign, looks like he's
setting off for the [.
There are positions in the world that are very daunting to undertake and Argentine superstar Sergio
Agüero can have the distinction of being the most daunting player both on and off the field.

it is his relationship with his current [.
New Atlético Madrid striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle is eager to meet up with his former club,
Liverpool, in the Champions League.
Speaking to Marca, the French forward stated that reuniting with the Reds would be a dream
scenario.
"Of course I'd love that," he said.
"It's not about revenge for me because it's already well in the past.
Just as Atlético Madrid's Sergio 'Kun' Agüero seemed to be taking over the world as we
know it, his little compatriot and international rooming partner Leo Messi decided that he'd like
to stay on the fingertips of Spain's keyboard judges for at least another week.
Passion and Law
Sergio Agüero has been named the best Latin American player in the Spanish league for 2008,
succeeding his countryman Lionel Messi and becoming the sixth Argentine to win the award. The EFE

of The Americas.
Here's the Ryan Babel match report from today's Liverpool-Atlético game (superfast and not
analytical): Maxi Rodríguez scored a "cracking" ( B. Glendenning) goal 37 minutes
in. Atlético then turned into a bathtub drain and Liverpool sort of overflowed to no effect.
Fernando Torres sat wrapped in feminine shadows and a pullover in the stands, looking limpid [.

scored three goals in his first eight appearances after moving to Merseyside from Atlético
Madrid, expects his forward partner to make up for lost time once he has broken his duck.
Maxi Rodríguez's goal for Atlético Madrid against Liverpool yesterday looks even better
in replays than it did at the time. You'll notice the nimble control from Antonio López and

the goal: he puts the ball directly on the end of [.
