I tried to stay outside of the EPL, so for instance, Rooney, wasn't included.
Jefferson Farfán, PSV Eindhoven
The 22-year-old Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfán has quite an impressive goal-scoring record at
PSV Eindhoven with 70 goals in 126 total appearances and with the losses of Alex, Cocu, and Arouna
Koné, he's going to have to continue that form if defending champion PSV is going to contend in
the Eredivisie this year.
- Reports are that Carra returned to training today and will be ready for action on Saturday when
we travel to Portsmouth. Great news considering how many players we have out on international duty
including Hyypia and Agger. Hopefully everyone will return fit and rested, Pompey at Fratton Park
will be no easy test.
- Apparently Atletico Madrid are keen on Pepe Reina and are putting together a bid for him in the
realm of £10m to offer LFC in the January transfer window.
- Fabio Aurelio made an unexpected early return to action today as the Reserves beat a Crewe
Alexandra Reserves side, 2-1, behind goals by Xabi Alonso and Ray Putterill. The 27-year-old Left
Back played an impressive 45 minutes. This is great news, if he's able to play this Saturday
against Portsmouth, it allows Arbeloa to play on the right if Finnan isn't fit or even in the
middle with Carra if Agger or Hyypia are fatigued.
Courtesy of AS: During today's press talk, Aguirre explained the Riquelme transfer soap opera. I
wanted [to sign him]. Yes, absolutely. What happens here, though, is that four people are needed to
sign [a player] and we all need to be in agreement. Ultimately, it was decided that with two days
until the close of the transfer window, [...]
(See entry below for other replacements mention in the media & by supporters) AS has written an
article on the possibility of Mourinho to Atleti. They wrote a bit about Mourinho's managerial
history. There isn't much in the way of 'evidence' that he is headed to el Vicente Calderon. It's
just a brief look at the situation of [...]
- Rafa has made sure that everyone knows this is his club when he stated that Torres' performance
last night doesn't guarantee him a place at Wigan on Saturday. It might be best to start him on the
bench anyhow as we should have a fresh Kuyt and Voronin, both of whom should be looking to redeem
themselves after Saturday's subpar performance versus Birmingham.
[Here's an interviewed featured on AS. I've translated half of it.] How do you feel in Madrid?
Are you happy? The truth, everything's turning out very well. My teammates have been [great]...the
only [dark spot has been the games]. I think that we have a lot of quality and we will get what we
want [soon, though]: to [...]
Very quick video, but all goals shown.
...always around to dredge up the forgettable past. They featured an article yesterday pointing
out that Atleti's start to the season (1 point out of 6 points) occurred in similar fashion during
the 05/06 season with manager Carlos Bianchi. Due to a string of negative results, the season
ended without Bianchi. Of course, they're suggesting that an away win at Murcia [.
Here is the wrap up for Jornada 3 of La Liga. I don't have much time to write wrap-ups for the
games, so I will attempt to link to a report of each game for you to enjoy. Once I have more time
on my hands and an opportunity to watch the games [...]
Great result that virtually assures us of progressing to the group stages of UEFA. GOLS Mista
12′ Forlan 16′ Luis Garcia 82′ Luis Garcia 91′ (assist by Maniche) According to match
reports, we scored our first two goals during 10 minutes of 'inspiration'. It's disconcerting to
read, though, that we continued to play unconvincingly (wobbly) for portions of the game,
especially in [.
25 year old Brasilian midfielder Thiago Motta was officially presented today as the newest member
of the rojiblanco family. Don Enrique Cerezo described him as a "[versatile] footballer with
[plenty of] experience" Some words from the ex-Barcelona man (after his 1st training with the
squad): I saw an extraordinary atmosphere in the dressing room and I think that is important [.
Today's training session only included twelve players: Leo Franco, Falcón, Jurado, Zé Castro,
Forlán, Raúl García, Motta, Luis García, Cléber Santana, Mista, Reyes and Antonio Lopez.
International Duty *Giorgios Seitaridis *Mariano Pernia & Pablo Ibanez *Simao & Maniche *Aguero
*Perea Injured Players At the Moment *Fabiano Eller injured his ankle during the UEFA qualifier.
Disappointing that we couldn't win against Zamora CF...a club that plays in Segunda división B
(Group II). Then again, Aguirre did play a second-string team with quite a few Atleti B players:
Falcón; Aitor Núñez, Zé Castro, Llorente, Reyes, Cléber Santana (Didi m83), Motta, Debris
(David Fernández m45), Luis García, Forlán (Rubiato m74) and Mista.
Here are some excerpts from Abbiati's press talk today (Friday): I love that the people have
confidence in me; it's something that [makes me happy] and gives me more confidence when I play.
He's certainly a fan favourite. When asked if he would like to say with Atleti after this season:
I've only been here for a few months [...]
Today's session, which was a little over an hour long, was geared toward preparing for this
weekend's away game against Real Murcia. There are two bits of positive news to report: Injury
Update News 1) 22 year old Right back/midfielder Juan Valera, for the first time since his knee
injury 7 months ago, participated in a training [...]
Atleti had their final training session today before leaving for Murcia this Sunday. Luis Perea
returned to Madrid this morning after playing in a friendly for Colombia earlier this week. He did
not exercise with the group. Maxi did not participate with the rest of the team; instead, he
exercised separately. They won't know if he's [...]
Pre-game thoughts? Let's. Win. Big. For the love of God. If we lose against newly-promoted (aka
relegation bait) Real Almeria, I will just scream. Chosen squad: 2 Seitaridis 3 Antonio López. 4
Pernía. 5 Motta. 7 Forlán. 8 Raúl García. 10 Agüero. 11 Maxi Rodríguez (I hope that he
doesn't start and reinjure himself) 13 Abbiati. 14 Zé Castro. 15 Jurado.
Anger at the Moment BYE BYE AGUIRRE. Shut the door on your way out. This was an absolutely
embarassing performance; if we weren't the laughing stock of Liga after the first two Jornadas, we
surely are now. Atleti were sluggish at times; once we went up by a goal, we simply lacked hunger &
desire to [...]
Here are the chosen 18 for the first leg tomorrow (Thursday): 2 Seitaridis. 3 Antonio López. 4
Pernía. 6 Cléber Santana. 7 Forlán. 8 Raúl García. 9 Luis García. 10 Agüero. 11 Maxi
Rodríguez. 12 Fabiano Eller. 13 Abbiati. 14 Zé Castro. 15 Jurado. 18 Maniche. 20 Mista. 21 Perea.
24 Simão. 25 Leo Franco. According to AS, Aguirre is expected to field this starting 11: Abbiati;
Perea, Antonio Lopez; Eller; Ze Castro; Jurado, Cleber [.
A must-win game- this Sunday. Starting 11: Leo Franco; Seitaridis, Pablo, Perea, Pernía; Raúl
García, Maniche, Maxi, Reyes; Kun Agüero and Forlán. Subs: Cleber, Antonio Lopez, Luis Garcia,
Eller, Abbiati, Mista, Simao Reyes starts his first Liga game for the club- let's see if we note
the difference. Will this single change alter the lacklustre performances we have [.
Thoroughly deserved victory over a Racing side that did absolutely nothing prior to and after the
sending off of Jordi in the 69th minute. We had the better chances throughout the game. GOLS Raúl
García 11′ Kun 69′ [Assist by Reyes.] Forlán 76′ [Assist by Kun.] Simao 86′ [Assist by
Luis.] Here's Aguirre's squad: Leo Franco; Seitaridis; Perea; Pablo; Pernía; Maniche; Raúl [.
INJURY NEWS Perea will be unavailable for at least 3 weeks. Leo Franco will not play against
Osasuna this Sunday he hopes to be fully recovered for round 7, in a couple weeks. We should have
Motta back in about by mid-October. Meanwhile, Pablo spoke to the press after the away win at
Athletic Bilbao: "The win tonight is [...]
The list is out. CHOSEN SQUAD: Falcón. Seitaridis Antonio López. Pernía. Cléber Santana.
Forlán. Raúl García. Luis García. Agüero. Maxi Rodríguez. Fabiano Eller. Abbiati. Zé Castro.
Jurado. Reyes. Maniche. Mista. Pablo Ibáñez. Simão. Eller returns, Jurado is recovered from the
injury he picked up a couple weeks ago, and Falcón is 2nd choice goalkeeper since Leo Franco is
out injured.
Here's Aguirre's starting 11: -Leo Franco - Seitaridis Pablo Perea Pernia Maniche Raul Garcia -
-Maxi - -Simao -Forlan -Aguero - On the bench: Abbiati, Antonio Lopez, Cleber, Jurado, Luis
Garcia, Reyes, Mista Stay tuned.
Not much to say, really. I'm disappointed and frustrated. We went down a goal in the 18th minute
after Guiza took advantage of some woeful defending. We managed to score an equaliser in the 77th
minute thanks to Pernia (who was otherwise mediocre during most of the game). We were denied a
clear penalty by the [...]
After scoring yesterday's equaliser, Pernia ran over to an area of Atleti supporters and covered
his ears, a gesture to express his anger over the whistles and jeers by the home support.
Today, he apologised: We did not deserve the whistles. We were fighting hard to come back into the
game...The team has turned around and we managed to [...]
Just a brief overview! *Maniche played a full 90 for Portugal and scored a goal. *Simao played 81
minutes for Portugal. *Pernia played 26 minutes for Spain, and quite badly I might add. *Pablo
didn't play at all for Spain. No injuries picked up! *Aguero has yet to play in Argentina's
friendly against Australia. That's on 11-September. *Seitaridis and the Greece national [.
I noticed that some folks out there are uncertain about the set time for Atlético's UEFA first
round games. [WordPress allows me to see web searches used to find my site.] Here's the info: First
Leg (20-September): Atlético v Erciyesspor (20:45 local time over there) Second Leg (4-October):
Erciyesspor v Atlético (19:00 local time over there) Click here for [.
This is just a brief entry to say that Aguero has completed his international duty with Argentina.
He played only a few minutes in the friendly against Australia, coming in as a sub for Messi. It's
a bit disappointing to read that he didn't play much, but, at the same time, it's also a relief
that [...]
International competition when not involving Los Albicelestes drags on forever for me. I'm happy
it's finally over...it's tough going an entire week without critiquing (read: whining) about
Atleti! Alright, here's some international duty wrap-up for Wednesday: Spain Pernia played a full
90 minutes. Pablo didn't play at all. Greece Seitaridis played 64 minutes.
(Raul on right) Raul Garcia, our most consistent signing of the summer thus far, has spoken to
the press. He believes that despite our sluggish start, we'll still do well. Here are a few
excerpts of his interview: On the week: This week has been a bit special with the commitments
several of the players have had with their national teams. [...]
Motta injured his knee during this (Monday) morning's training session. His leg gave way when he
jumped for a header. He has a history of knee problems. I didn't expect him to suffer one so soon
into the season. Just awful news. Stay tuned.
Click here for dates and previous entries on UEFA. We face Kayseri Erciyesspor. There are no ifs,
ands, or buts about the away leg and the home leg we must and should win both, not only
convincingly but also by a large margin. For morale and to put our lacklustre start to the season
behind us [...]
Midfielder Jurado will be out for about 2 weeks with an ankle injury picked up during yesterday's
UEFA leg.
Our Luisy scored a couple to ensure his sides' win in UEFA Cup action. What might be even more
impressive is the fact that he had a part in all four goals as both the other ones for his club
came off rebounds from his shots. Here are the video highlights, Garica scores the last two.
Cheers.
That if we lose against Racing this Sunday, Aguirre will be sacked? Some names being tossed around
at the moment: Diego Simeone, Radomir Antic. To a lesser extent, I've heard Javier Irureta and Luis
Aragones names as well in the mix. I have a few doubts: Simeone, an Atleti favourite when he played
for the club, is [...]
Last season, Liga was the last European league to end. 07/08 is different: far more tighter and
more weekday games. Jornada 5 is a weekday fixture, away to Athletic Bilbao, currently sharing the
same amount of points as us (5 pts). Last season, we beat them 1-4 (of course, now they have a
new defence with the [...]
Quick Entry. Miguel De las Cuevas, Motta and Jurado all trained very, very lightly today. Jurado
was incorporated into the full squad, but didn't do anything too strenuous. Miguel is still
recuperating & training on his own. Motta , injured 18- Sept, has began working with the physical
therapist, which is great.; He did specialised exercises & walked around [.
It's tomorrow, 20.00 local time. CHOSEN SQUAD: Seitaridis; Antonio López; Pernía; Cléber
Santana; Forlán; Raúl García; Luis García; Agüero; Maxi; Abbiati; Zé Castro; Reyes; Maniche;
Mista; Perea; Pablo Ibáñez; Simão; Leo Franco. Given Maxi's poor form, this would be my starting
11: Leo Franco - Seita Pablo Perea Pernia Simao Raul Garcia Maniche Reyes Kun Forlan - I'd even
consider putting Luis Garcia instead of Simao.
