I tried to stay outside of the EPL, so for instance, Rooney, wasn't included.
Jefferson Farfán, PSV Eindhoven
The 22-year-old Peruvian striker Jefferson Farfán has quite an impressive goal-scoring record at
PSV Eindhoven with 70 goals in 126 total appearances and with the losses of Alex, Cocu, and Arouna
Koné, he's going to have to continue that form if defending champion PSV is going to contend in
the Eredivisie this year.
I'm pretty bored, so I thought I'd throw my irrelevant two cents into the mix. Here's who I think
were the world's best XI in 2007. Feel free to flog me, I know nothing, of course.
GK - Petr Čech
Casillas, Reina, and Buffon are all incredible, but some of the saves Čech makes are just plain
silly.
Sergio Aguero has put his holiday on hold and has been training for Saturday's Intertoto home leg
against Gloria Bistrita. I have not had any holidays, but Atlético comes before everything. The
new players that have come in are very strong...Now we just to work on our understanding to win
games. You always need a period of [...]
I have pre-derbi thoughts below; this is an addendum to that with some recent news. Here's the
chosen squad: Leo Franco, Abbiati, Seitaridis, Pablo Ibáñez, Perea, Fabiano Eller, Pernía,
Antonio López, Maniche, Cléber Santana, Raúl García, Luis García, Simão, Reyes, Maxi
Rodríguez, Kun Agüero, Forlán and Mista. It's a bit curious to me that Braulio was left out [.
QUE PARTIDAZO DEL ATLETI! We have one foot in the doorway to UEFA Cup action after a fantastic,
convincing performance tonight! We didn't have to suffer through our victory! Los Rojiblancos
played magnificiently for long spells of the game. This is a team that will bring pride back to el
Vicente Calderón stadium. We ended the [...]
IN 1. Diego Costa 2. Raúl García 3. Christian Abbiati 4. Diego Forlán 5. Luis García 6. Cléber
Santana Diego Costa (full name Diego da Silva Costa) I know very little about this player, so I
did a few web-searches and came up with some interesting tid bits of information. For starters,
Atleti signed him from Sporting Braga in January '07 (until 2010), only [.
SkySports.com has posted an interesting article comparing Atletico Madrid's former star striker,
Fernando Torres, with their new signing Diego Forlan. Torres, after much fan uproar, was allowed to
leave for Liverpool for a fee of £26,500,000. At first, it seemed like a blow to the side that had
finished 6th and would be competing in the UEFA Cup this season.
- Reports are that Carra returned to training today and will be ready for action on Saturday when
we travel to Portsmouth. Great news considering how many players we have out on international duty
including Hyypia and Agger. Hopefully everyone will return fit and rested, Pompey at Fratton Park
will be no easy test.
- Apparently Atletico Madrid are keen on Pepe Reina and are putting together a bid for him in the
realm of £10m to offer LFC in the January transfer window.
It's all over the place: reports streaming from Spain claim that Atleti and Villarreal have agreed
to a contract for Juan Roman Riquelme. The Argentine is expected to make a decision this Monday,
the day after the Copa America final. So, at this point, it's still very much in the air.
Regardless, this brings into question [...]
Today, during a training session, Portuguse midfielder Costinha punched Jacobo Ynclán in the face
after the 20 year old canterano dangerously tackled him. The fight was broken up by a few
players, judging by the photo, Brasilian Diego Costa. It just so happens that 50 or so Atleti
supporters were watching the training when the incident occurred.
On a hot and muggy Saturday afternoon, a growing group of MADRIDISTA's gathered at New York City's
premier soccer watering hole(NEVADA SMITH's for those who don't know) to witness for themselves
just how far REAL MADRID has come in it's transition from Capello's LA LIGA championship winning
brand of negative Machiavellian soccer tactics to Schuster's brand of flowing attractive attacking
‘futbol'.
- Fabio Aurelio made an unexpected early return to action today as the Reserves beat a Crewe
Alexandra Reserves side, 2-1, behind goals by Xabi Alonso and Ray Putterill. The 27-year-old Left
Back played an impressive 45 minutes. This is great news, if he's able to play this Saturday
against Portsmouth, it allows Arbeloa to play on the right if Finnan isn't fit or even in the
middle with Carra if Agger or Hyypia are fatigued.
- Abramovich should put Rob Styles on his payroll to compensate him for his generosity
- Sven is the Leonardo Da Vinci of Man City
- England needs Stevie-G more than Stevie-G needs England
- First and second thoughts about the US' loss to Sweden
- Highlights from some of the International matches on Wednesday
- Ain't no violence like Bosnia-Croatia friendly violence?
I mentioned previously that Antonio Lopez is a strong candidate for the captaincy. Who is
challenging the Spaniard for that key role? Fan favourite Maxi Rodriguez, the influential Argentine
midfielder (fully recovered from that horrendous injury he suffered during the early part of
06/07). Today, during the Argentine's talk with the press (regarding the job of [.
Los Rojiblancos had a non-strenous training session yesterday (Thursday) after their return from
Vigo. Luis Garcia, who didn't travel with the squad to the friendly, rejoined the team and
participated in the training session. Centre-back Ze Castro, who also didn't travel to Vigo, is
still slightly injured and participated in a much lighter session in [.
Atlético aficionados come out in droves to purchase tickets for tonight's UEFA qualifying clash
against Serbian club Vojvodina (expected to play an ultra-defensive game). Supporters will have an
opportunity to see the entire team in action, especially the new arrivals: Forlan, Simao, Reyes,
Luis Garcia, and Raul Garcia. Unfortunately, I can't find a link to a site [.
*Peter Luccin is set for a move to Newcastle or Birmingham City (now that he has fallen down the
pecking order). This looks like it'll become a reality this week hopefully we'll get some sort of
sum for him. Oh, and who ever transfers him to their club, I'm so very sorry for you. I've [...]
Here's a video review of the goals. Below read the written review, if you missed it. Enjoy! A few
of manager Javier Aguirre comments: It was a good game, a good result and there no injuries and
only a couple of yellow cards [Seitaridis and Reyes]. It was a complete night for all Atlético
fans because the team showed [...]
First, I'm disappointed with the result, but I'm also disappointed that I will not be able to watch
this at all on TV. WHY? GolTV claims there were difficulties in broadcasting the derby live,
worldwide. Unless you were physically at the stadium OR reside in Spain and purchased the derbi a
la Pay-Per-View, then you [...]
As The Gaffer already mentioned Sevilla kicked off their season on Saturday with a 4-1 win over
Getafe. While I had been looking forward to the Madrid derby, I decided to watch the Sevilla-Getafe
match and was not disappoined at all. The game had plenty of excitement, flair and talking points.
In the first half alone there was enough action and drama for an entire match.
Courtesy of AS: During today's press talk, Aguirre explained the Riquelme transfer soap opera. I
wanted [to sign him]. Yes, absolutely. What happens here, though, is that four people are needed to
sign [a player] and we all need to be in agreement. Ultimately, it was decided that with two days
until the close of the transfer window, [...]
(See entry below for other replacements mention in the media & by supporters) AS has written an
article on the possibility of Mourinho to Atleti. They wrote a bit about Mourinho's managerial
history. There isn't much in the way of 'evidence' that he is headed to el Vicente Calderon. It's
just a brief look at the situation of [...]
- Rafa has made sure that everyone knows this is his club when he stated that Torres' performance
last night doesn't guarantee him a place at Wigan on Saturday. It might be best to start him on the
bench anyhow as we should have a fresh Kuyt and Voronin, both of whom should be looking to redeem
themselves after Saturday's subpar performance versus Birmingham.
Reminder: The game is on 5-December at 20.45pm. A victory in this game would seal our place in the
last 32. The chosen 18 have been selected: Falcón; Antonio López; Pernía; Motta; Cléber;
Forlán; Raúl García; Luis Garcíal Agüero; Maxi; Eller; Abbiati; Reyes; Maniche; Mista; Perea;
Pablo; Simão.
06/07 season was rough (disastrous and embarassing, even), but I will miss the good things:
the goals, the flashes of brilliance, and moments of inspiration. Best of luck to El Niño in
this new chapter of his footballing career with Liverpool.
I hate rumours and speculation because they're meaningless until officially confirmed. That said,
they persist and I can't avoid them! Supporting a club like Atletico in the process of rebuilding
you can't help it. The Big Two At the Moment: Ricardo Quaresma I wrote about him briefly in Part I,
but the rumours surrounding the 23 year old midfielder persist, [.
Here's Part I. Luis Perea qualifies for Spanish citizenship this week which means that the
Colombian centre-back frees up an extracommunitarian spot. It's a crucial spot that will probably
be occupied by Cléber Santana for Atleti's Intertoto home game against Gloria Bistrita. Cléber is
an attacking midfielder and his services are desperately needed to secure a spot in [.
Centre-back Pablo has dismissed a possible move to Real Zaragoza or Deportivo La Coruña today
by making it clear he wishes to stay with los rojiblancos: I have the support of the coach and
board to allow me to stay here...I feel like an important player here and I want prove that I am
this season. At [...]
Atletico have officially signed winger Simao Sabrosa on a 4-year contract worth €20 million; he
is the 7th signing the club have made for the 07/08 season and a very, very good one. The club
shelled out an enormous amount for him and I hope that he proves his worth this season. He has
excellent [...]
With giant striker Nikola Zigic on his way to Valencia, Racing Santander are on the lookout for a
new striker. Who do they have in mind? Atleti's Mista. With his position as 3rd choice striker in
doubt not to mention his poor form at the moment Mista should consider a move out of the club.
[...]
Hm, according to this article, Atleti are interested in signing 31 year old playmaker, Alvaro
Recoba. Inter Milan are ready to unload their veteran player this summer. His future at the club
has been in doubt for several months now. He was previously linked to Atletico, several months ago,
but that rumour disappeared rather quickly. [...]
Good news, fellow Colchoneros! Sergio 'kun' Aguero will play in the starting 11 tomorrow (UEFA
qualifer) after much pressure from the media (particularly in Argentina) and supporters. Many
including myself feel that the young Argentine has earned a spot alongside Diego Forlan after his
fine form during the U-20 World Cup. I'm very happy with [.
Today our beloved play a local friendly against neighbours Getafe. Since the departure of Schuster
to Real Madrid, Getafe have been managed by Dane Michael Laudrup. So far, under his charge, have
won all 7 of their pre-season friendlies. Manager Aguirre plans on taking a second-string side to
the friendly, giving key players a rest. Chosen Squad: GK: [.
Fernando Torres seemingly helped the only club he'd ever known more by leaving then he ever did by
staying. Despite leading Atlético Madrid to higher finishes the last three seasons, peaking last
season at 7th and an Intertoto Cup bid, and also helping them gain promotion to La Liga after his
first season there in 2001-02, the cash injection Los Colchoneros received for selling the
23-year-old might be his biggest contribution so far.
La Liga kicks off this weekend and I am going to highlight three games. We start things off with a
bang as the Madrid derby sees Real host Atlético. It has been revealed that new signings Arjen
Robben and Gabriel Heinze will not make their Real Madrid debuts despite my feeling that at least
Heinze would start. However, goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been included after injury, while six
other summer signings have also been named to the squad - Christoph Metzelder, Pepe, Javier
Saviola, Jerzy Dudek, Royston Drenthe and Wesley Sneijder.
I've seen the videos and it doesn't look as grim as a lot of supporters have painted it- granted,
we still need to work on defence. Pernia did look terrible (wreckless tackles and conceding
unnecessary free kicks), but for most of the second half, it was back-and-forth and not-one-sided
(with Atleti not absorbing attacking pressure [...]
For 30-August. Word is that Barcelona's Thiago Motta will complete his medical tomorrow morning
(Friday). A defensive midfielder. Just what we need...I guess. I don't know what to make of this,
to be honest. I see him as occupying a spot on the bench essentially the reason Peter Luccin
decided to leave and entertain an offer [...]
Here's an eye-opening interview of Garcia Pitarch, sporting director. Some of the phrasing is
difficult to translate to English, but I tried my best. INTERVIEWER: The name Riquelme [looms
constantly...]... Reply: The [expectation is normal]. There are, of course, external factors: the
media, who give their opinion. And fans believe them, but that's not how it is.
Forlán celebrates after scoring from the spot. STARTING 11: Abbiati, Antonio López, Eller, Pablo,
Pernía, Motta, Cleber, Maxi (Maniche 71), Luis García, Agüero (Simão 46), Forlán (Mista 70).
Subs Not Used: Falcón, Raúl García, Zé Castro, Reyes. GOALS 45+1′ Forlán (pen) 61′ Simão

The best is yet to come! He's come a long way since his first season at the club, hm? Youth,
talent, quality, goals, vision, skill... Congratulations to him- thoroughly deserved award.
Previous winners: Fabregas (2006), Messi (2005), Rooney (2004), van der Vaart (2003). Be back
tomorrow afternoon (NY time) with an Atleti v Getafe entry.
