The knockout rounds saw the Chicago Fire, Atlanta United, San Jose Earthquakes and Sporting Kansas City ejected from the playoffs, while the conference semis claimed NYCFC, the New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps.

It's certainly hard to get noticed when playing alongside attackers like Miguel Almiron, Josef Martinez and Hector Villalba. Atlanta United's attack monster was loaded with young, exciting pieces, resulting in a swashbuckling run to the playoffs unlike any ever put together by an expansion side.

Through it all, though, Julian Gressel was as consistent a presence as any in the Atlanta United lineup as the German-born midfielder neared some attacking records in a standout rookie campaign.

D.C. United season review: Deshorn Brown

The forward gets the treatment.

There's no big surprise that little worked right for D.C. United during the 2017 season, but after a game that nobody expected them to win (a 3-1 road win over Atlanta United), the goals dried up, but fast. Patrick Mullins (whom we'll discuss later) just returned from injury, Jose Ortiz was in the midst of finding his form which was clearly not up to MLS level competition, so the Black-and-Red needed some offense before the MLS secondary window opened in July, and after 1 goal in six league games after the Atlanta win, they needed them fast.

It's hard to feel a sense of accomplishment in the lowest moment of the season, but that's what Atlanta United tried to do on Thursday night.

Columbus needed penalties to get past Atlanta United in the knockout round of the 2017 MLS playoffs. The two teams finished scoreless through 120 minutes at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but that says nothing about the quality of the game. Both teams had close chances, relying on the frame of the goal and quality play from their goalkeepers.
