Average reported attendances for MLS through gameweek 21 of the 2017 season

This past week saw solid reported attendance numbers with the exception of Philadelphia’s midweek match and the FC Dallas home game. The numbers should remain reasonably strong for the rest of the season with Atlanta having eight home matches, while Seattle has seven home games remaining.

The average attendance from the opening weekend of the 2017 MLS season was 25,156, which represented a 3.8% decline compared to the 2016 MLS opening weekend average of 26,152.

The difference can be attributed to Seattle Sounders being on the road this season while they were at home for week 1 in 2016.

One interesting tidbit of information came out of yesterday's press conference in Minnesota. While all along we know that Atlanta, LAFC and Minnesota United FC are the next three clubs into MLS, the order may not be as cut and dry as it has always appeared.

According to MLSSoccer.com, Atlanta is the only definite team for 2017 and the other two sides could swap places depending on how construction of their new stadiums go.

I see that number in the headline and I am immediately impressed. To get 17,000-plus already reserved for a team that won't set foot on a field in MLS until 2017 is flat out impressive.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting these figures that 6,000 founding members of the Atlanta club help make up this 17,500 number.
