Look, I like soccer ads sometimes. I even like soccer ads that a lot of people hate, like the one
during the 1998 World Cup that featured a Massive Attack song and some black and white shots of
soccer players taking free kicks in what looks like one of those indoor mountain climbing gyms.
Well, I liked that one because I thought I liked the song at the time, until I found out later I
didn't.
UK residents and regular HEGS readers will already be familiar with my semi-regular contributions

When the Argentine national team flew to South Africa a week ago today, twenty-two barra bravas
from Chacarita Juniors and Boca Juniors were on the same flight, in the economy section. The AFA

If you're an Argentine football fan and a bit of a glutton for punishment or if you're otherwise

Deafened by the vuvuzela and with sofa sores on my behind, I sit remote control in hand decidedly
underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong; to me it is still the beautiful game. It has just started to
sport a few wrinkles. I had a good, if somewhat childlike build-up to the World Cup. The obligatory
purchase [.
If simply knowing which players are in the squad isn't enough, Argentina-watchers can rejoice
today: the full list of which players will use which shirt numbers during the 2010 World Cup has

I'm a little late in linking to this, due to a daytrip to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay on

parte querida.
River Plate have beaten Boca Juniors in a competitive match for the first time in over three years,
with a 1-0 win in El Monumental on Tuesday. Former Boca defender Jonatan Maidana scored the only

One of my new year's resolutions was to try and update this blog more often than I had managed in
2009 but to be absolutely truthful, it's difficult enough to entertain brief conversations about
Hearts with sympathetic friends never mind finding the motivation to sit down and actually write
about them.
Motherwell star Jim O`Brien has confirmed that he is switching his allegiance back to Scotland,
after originally declaring for the Republic of Ireland.
This Sunday, as Juan Román Riquelme announced on Fox Sports on Monday afternoon, could be his
final home match at La Bombonera. His contract talks are stalling and the feud with Martín Palermo
ensures it'll be awkward for both men ... Continue reading →
Airdrie United have been relegated to Division Two after Rory McAllister gave Brechin City a
controversial victory in their play-off semi-final second leg. It means that Airdrie, who were
saved from relegation last season after Livingston were demoted to Division Three and the season
before when Gretna went out of business, [.
ST MIRREN have sacked manager Gus MacPherson after almost seven years as manager with the Paisley
club. The Buddies avoided relegation to finish this season in 10th place in the Scottish Premier
League. The Buddies have since finished 11th, 10th, 11th and 10th in their four seasons in the
12-team top flight.
Whilst both Argentina's and Brazil's preliminary squads for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa
caused some consternation on the part of fans and the media in their countries, the lists announced
by the managers of Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile ... Continue reading →
With that ringing endorsement, St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour has called on suitably qualified
managers to make themselves known to the club. Gilmour claims there has already been a great deal
of interest in the job and doesn't fear a shortage of candidates. In some ways, The Buddies are not
an unattractive option for any manager [.
Wednesday will see Diego Maradona confirm which twenty-three of the thirty players named last week
he'll be taking (injuries permitting) to South Africa, and of course HEGS will have the information

With the World Cup squad set to fly out to South Africa from Ezeiza airport on Friday, I thought

The Argentine national team arrived in South Africa at around 8am Buenos Aires time this morning,

After an opening performance from Argentina which ranged from the outstanding (Lionel Messi) to the
anonymous (Ángel Di María) by way of the pity-inducing (Jonás Gutiérrez), I've done a write-up
of the reaction in Argentina for ESPN Soccernet. You can ... Continue reading →
Argentina's performance yesterday against South Korea was highly impressive, and plenty of people

Argentina's passage to the second round of the 2010 World Cup having been confirmed on Tuesday, the
country's main concern during Wednesday's matches was who their rivals in the quarter-finals will

Argentina's win against Mexico on Sunday was their first in 90 minutes in the knockout rounds of a

This isn't strictly to do with Argentine football. Well, okay. It's absolutely nothing to do with
Argentine football. But the reason HEGS has been quiet in the last few days is that I've been

Just a quick post to confirm the story posted here on HEGS yesterday: the AFA have just announced

As everyone starts to get ready for the Fall soccer season, I was wondering if any of you had
feedback or ideas for the Youth Soccer Guide. The idea was to collect many of the more
instructional/informative posts I've written through the years in one place for soccer parents,
coaches, and league administrators to reference.
Denmark face Iceland on the 7th of September and will have to do with out 2 of their key
strikers for the past 3 years through retirement and injury. Firstly, Jon Dahl Tommasson has opted
to retire on a high after scoring in the S.A World Cup and achieving the record of all time top
scorer for the national side.
The 2010 Torneo Apertura is already one-nine-and-a-halfth of the way through, and with River plate
hopeful of putting together the kind of run they need to avoid relegation, Boca Juniors still
waiting for Juan Román Riquelme to return to fitness ... Continue reading →

Is it time for Arsene's stars to shine?
For many years now we have been saying it's a matter of time before Arsenal come good. Well
after watching them grind out a result at Blackburn on Saturday maybe we won't be waiting much
longer.
The ability that Arsene Wenger's side possess is in unquestionable.
