A FIFA Congress can be a rather strange experience you look around to see delegates from 47 countries walking in and out of the hall as Sepp Blatter delivers a speech about tackling corruption and the "phenomenal" growth of Asian football at the same time.
If you listened carefully, you'd be able to hear snickering as suggestions to "amendments" (issues such as using the word "shall" and "may" in the constitution) are being proposed by the Pakistani Football Federation.
In a few hours, The Asian Football Federation (AFC) will elect its first president since the controversial lifetime ban of Mohammad bin Hammam last year. Futbolita examines the impact of the election and explains how all four candidates may find political and cultural challenges in unifying all 47 Asian football states in the region.
Another proud week in South East Asian football comes to an end. Indonesia got thumped by Bahrain
10-0 and FIFA are investigating if there was a little help there in that scoreline.
Singapore managed to lose 7-1 away to Iraq. And Thailand lost 2-0 away to Oman.
Intriguingly the AFC have yet to update their website with details of the final games?
A wonder goal scored by league leaders Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates has gone viral and it is easy to see why.
Currently top of the UAE Pro-League by a huge nine point margin, Al Ain are the record champions in the oil rich nation with ten league championships to their name. Al Ain, based in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, have only lost one game so far this season and that defeat came on the opening day of the season against Al Ahli.
United Arab Emirates won this year's Gulf Cup of Nations on Friday night. They needed extra-time before eventually seeing off tough opposition in the form of Iraq with Ismail Al Hammadi's winner in the 107th minute proving the difference between the two sides.
Both nations had emerged top of their respective groups in the league stages, both of whom registering a 100% record with three wins from three, but were made to fight it out in the semi-finals with the UAE knocking out Kuwait with a goal in the 89th minute whilst Iraq needed a penalty shoot-out in order to dispose of tournament hosts Bahrain after they had been involved in a 1-1 draw.
Kuwait won the Gulf Cup for a record tenth time in 2010
The 2013 Gulf Cup of Nations kicks off this weekend in Bahrain with the tournament hosts getting things under way on Saturday facing off against Oman in the opening match. Defending champions Kuwait, who are hoping to win the tournament for a record extending eleventh time, will get their campaign under way on Sunday against Yemen.
Saudi Arabian football will be well represented in the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions
League. Following this week's Round of 16 matches three sides from Saudi Arabia made it through to
the last eight with another five teams, all hailing from different nations, to join them in the
business end of the tournament.
Asian football's two major continental tournaments have reached the knockout stages following
the conclusion of the group stages this week.
The AFC Champions League is usually dominated by South Korean clubs but only two of this year's
four representatives have made it through the group stage.
Russia's Under-21 team have won the CIS Cup for the second year in a row
Tournament hosts Russia emerged victorious for the second year in a row in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Cup today following a 4-2 win over arch-rivals Ukraine in St Petersburg.
The form guide going into the final suggested that Ukraine were the favourites over Russia.
Lionel Messi, seen here with the 2010 award, has won FIFA's Ballon d'Or for 2012
The 2012 FIFA Ballon d'Or ceremony has been held in Zurich with the undoubted star of the show once again being FC Barcelona and Argentina sensation Lionel Messi. He has picked up FIFA's top award for individual footballers for the third consecutive year since FIFA's World Player of the year and France Football's Ballon d'Or awards merged in 2010, and his fourth overall.
Bahrain have won the Gold Medal at the 2011 Pan Arab Games football tournament in Qatar.
Bahrain had qualified for the final by virtue of topping their group in the first stage, gaining
back-to-back wins over host nation Qatar and Iraq, before eliminating Palestine in the semi-final
ahead of yesterday's final match.
In the first major footballing showpiece final of this year, Kashiwa Reysol secured Japanese football's major domestic knockout competition when defeating Gamba Osaka 1-0 in the 2012 (yes, that is 2012 as opposed to 2013) Emperor's Cup final in the National Stadium in Tokyo.
Kashiwa Reysol went into the game as favourites, the team having finished the 2012 J-League 1 season in a respectable sixth place.
First of all I should start this piece by wishing everybody a happy new year! I've been enjoying
myself over the Christmas holiday and have neglected the blog over the last few days so I need to
rectify this, starting off with a piece regarding the new Emperor's Cup winners in Japan.
FC Tokyo have done an unlikely league and cup double in Japan following their 4-2 triumph over
Kyoto Sanga in last Sunday's Emperor's Cup final.
All good things have to come to an end eventually and the long shot that was Shanghai Shenhua belatedly saving their season and qualifying for the Asian Champions League is now off the table after the team was humiliated 4-2 by the high-flying Guizhou Renhe on Sunday.
Wang Dalei China's Fallen Star Begins To Shine Again is a post from: Just Football
It's not all about Drogba and Anelka in Shanghai. Just Football's man in China Andrew Crawford reports on the re-emergence of a local talent:
The Chinese Super League is down to the final three games of the 2012 season and whilst most eyes have been on the expensively acquired foreign signings now plying their trade in China, others have been watching the redemption of one of its most promising but frustrating players, Wang Dalei.
By Andrew Crawford, writing from Shanghai. View all letters here.
Two months into the second phase of the Shanghai Shenhua revolution, with Didier Drogba freshly
installed as the team's new alpha male, the team have gone unbeaten over seven games.
I don't know if you, like me, continued to hold onto some semblance of hope that Didier Drogba
would ink a short-term deal with Chelsea this summer. Sure, the idea may no sense whatsoever as the
end to last season was, well, a perfect ending to a legendary career at the club but that didn't
matter.
The full time whistle had barely sounded when Shanghai Shenhua's goalkeeper, Wang Dalei turned
to the home fans behind him with a face of unchecked elation. Overwhelmed with relief, stalward Yu
Tao fell to the ground and remained there for several minutes.
Chinese club Ghangzhou Evergrande have made a statement of intent for the year ahead by
appointing former FIFA World Cup winning coach Marcello Lippi to take charge of the team.
Lippi takes over a club who are in fine health having won their maiden Chinese Super League last
season and leading ten games into the current campaign with 22 out of 30 points (seven wins, one
draw, two defeats), one more than nearest challengers Ghangzhou R&F.
Shambles in Shanghai: Tigana, Tantrums and Anelka as manager is a post from: Just Football
by Andrew Crawford
The Chinese Super League (CSL) is once again watching its most noisy tenant,
Shanghai Shenhua, soak up all the attention. Its big name manager, Jean
Tigana is gone, replaced, or rather deposed, in headline-grabbing style by Nicolas
Anelka, who will now try to rescue the club from its plunge into the bottom half of the
league.
Following on from Muang Thong United's flirtation of Italian Alessandro Del Pierro comes news of
another South East Asian football team linking themselves with the great and the good.
This time it is Malaysian Premier League side Johor. They are talking about bringing over Juan
Roman Riquelme and Pablo Aimar for next season!
Indonesian teams have hardly set Asian football on fire. Ever. So it is refreshing to report that
Arema, struggling in the bottom half of the Indonesia Premier League, managed to travel to Hong
Kong and defeat Kitchee 2-0 to earn a place in the quarter final stage of Asia's AFC Cup.
Arema of course only reached the Round of 16 after winning their final group game 6-2 to overturn a
poor goal difference and no one gave them much chance in Hong Kong.
Persija v Persiram 1-2 (Bambang Pamungkas; Elthon Maran, Yan Ruatakeury)
Arema v Persegres 0-0 34,126
Must be a shock defeat for Persija. Played at PTIK Stadium in Jakarta 'cos no fans allowed due to
political campaigning. Arema report will be added later but here are some pictures on Asian
Football Pictures.
Indonesia Super League
Persiba v Persisam 3-2 (Kenji Adichihara, Aldo Baretto, Shohei Matsunanga; Jerry Karpeh 2)
4,032Gresik United v Mitra Kukar 1-2 (Warwan Mustafa; Erminano, Hamka Hamzah) 22,800
Busy day for the clubs from East Kalimantan. In the derby hosts Persiba needed a late goal from
Matsunanga while on the road Mitra Kukar climbed to third place after their win in East Java; a
fine riposte from Simon McMenemy's men after management claimed to be 'evaluating' the coach's
position following their 3-1 defeat away to PSPS.
I was not at Bugis Junction this afternoon to witness the draw of the annual RHB Singapore Cup
competition, but managed to gather some feedback from the tweets and timeline in between my
work.
The Hellas wouldn't be coming With the pulling out of Australia's South Melbourne FC
(pictured above) due to its congested fixture back home, their place was taken up by another
foreign side in the form of Yotha FC from Laos (which was only made known officially this
afternoon).
I don't know how long Geylang United have worn green. Certainly for me I have always identified
them as the team in green. Green befits them. So why change the colour to maroon for the new
season? Apparently the club consulted with management and the Singapore FA before going ahead with
the change.

Wolves are a fascinating species. When it comes to sustaining dominance, wolves tend to display an act of submission or 'giving in' to the dominant wolf. On the other hand, the dominant wolf, known as the alpha male, demonstrates his power by getting each and every pack member's attention.
I wasn't expecting this game to be a 0-0. Persegres have the worst defence in the Indonesia Super
League, they concede fours and fives for fun. But Arema failed to break them down.
And with good reason. Their crossing was abysmal. With Herman Dzumafo in the box, the man is a
beast, all they had to do was put it in the air, close to his head, and let him do the rest.
Three things Pakistani football can learn from Euro 2012 - originally posted on
Soccerlens.com
The 2012 European Championships will kick off this summer in Poland and Ukraine. The Euro 2012
betting odds hugely favour Spain and Germany, but beyond the favourites and indeed beyond the 16
teams competing at Euro 2012, there are plenty of footballing lessons for Pakistan and Pakistani
football to learn from, and hopefully apply to our own national team's cause.
You just know it's gonna be bad when you see perennial bench warmer Boy Jati starting up front
alongside a new signing.
This hasn't been the greatest of seasons for Arema and this 2-1 defeat away to Pelita Jaya was just
about right. Forget the fact that the two teams are to all intents and purposes owned by the same
people, Arema are a poor team.

Division One action yesterday, once I finally found the bloody stadium. The game had been moved to
Ramkamheng because of the flooding that had effected Air Force's usual stadium but was the stadium
easy to find? Was it bollocks. Every bugger I asked either knew nothing about it or pointed me
unhelpfully to Rajamangala which is nearby.
