Common perception has it that the Champions League knockout stages represent the highest standards
anywhere to be found in the game. The crème de la crème of world football. Where the best
players, meanest defenders and most skilful attackers ply their trade and where the margin for
error is at it's thinnest.
You can't do much better than 100 percent. South Korea's quartet of teams that started the 2010
Asian Champions League back in February have all survived the first round intact. China have lost
at least three of theirs and it could be all four while Japan will see at least one and probably
two fall by the wayside.
So, DC United has gone out and signed MLS' first ever Australian, forward Danny Allsopp from
Qatar's Al-Rayyan club.
Earlier, I tweeted that I hated the move. Maybe that was a bit harsh. Let me restate it this way
instead. I am hugely worried about this move. Here's why.
First off, I don't know what his salary is yet, so this is just speculation on my part.
Yet again Etoile have been pushing debate in the SLeague. They look to be the first club to take
marketing seriously. Now the geezer that runs the club with that impossible to remember surname has
opened another can of worms.
Etoile will start charging 10 SGD for fans wishing to watch their games.
Asian football history will be made this Wednesday with South Korea at the heart of it all. The
Land of the Morning Calm is supplying 50% of the eight teams still involved in the Asian Champions
League as the continental competition resumes at the quarterfinal stage after a break of four
months.
Much has happened since the second round came to a close in May, not least the 2010 World Cup.

The tournament might technically have already started, but come tomorrow, some of the bigger
clubs enter play in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Seven teams representing each continental confederation will be in action in the United Arab
Emirates. Two smaller teams began the tournament Wednesday, with UAE side Al-Wahda defeating Hekari
United, the Oceania representative from Papua New Guinea, 3-0.
Cometh the hour, cometh Yasuhito Endo as one of Asian football's genuine stars took control
of the 89th Emperor's Cup final at the National Stadium in Tokyo.
The recently crowned Asian footballer of the year scored twice and laid on another as Gamba Osaka
overpowered Nagoya Grampus 4-1 in front of 42,140 fans, who turned out in bright sunshine in the
Japanese capital.
Siam Sport are reporting that Thai Port trialist, Masahiro Fukasawa (on the right of the pic
below), has signed for TPL rivals Bangkok United. The 32 year old Japanese player had spent a
couple of weeks on trial at PAT Stadium, and even made a couple of appearances for Port in
pre-season friendlies.
It is unclear if Thai Port chose not to pursue their interest in the player, or whether he himself
decided that a move to the Thai-Japanese Stadium would be a better option for his career.
It's always a pleasure watching a game of football in the company of Tony Tannous, whose football
judgements are so unfailingly accurate. Yesterday, just prior to the start of the Sydney v. Gold
Coast encounter, I expressed my view that it would be a close-fought game. Tony grimaced and
replied, "Sydney without Brosque.

The Asian Football Confederation have released the official fixtures for the 2010 AFC Cup. Thai
Port are in Group H alongside Woofoo Tai Po (HK), and Geylang United (Sin). There is still one
place left open in the group, that will be filled by either Sriwijaya (Indo), or SHB Da Nang (Vie)
depending on which teams lose in the Asian Champions League qualifying stage.
SHORT SCRIBE
Indeed, SAFFC shown why they are dead serious about making to the lucrative Asian Champions League

So the expected has happened, and Graham Arnold steps into the chair vacated, voluntarily it seems,

For all his team's staleness over the past year, Lawrie McKinna's contribution to the nascent
A-League has been considerable, and worthy of great respect.

Following on from my expressed interest in watching some different kinds of football from the norm,

For the second successive Asian Champions League game at Jalan Besar Stadium Singapore Armed Forces
have had a player red carded.
No doubt the word is going out in referee circles. Watch them Warriors, they're dirty gits. Dish
'em a red, we'll look tough and they won't complain anyway.
SAFFC need to learn sharpish how the mind of an AFC ref works.

Thai Port travel to Singapore for Tuesday's crunch AFC Cup group H clash against Geylang on the
back of a timely TPL victory over Police United. Sasom Pobpraserd rested several first team
regulars for that match, and whether he chooses to recall the big names or stick with a winning
line up remains to be seen.
It turns out that ‘Koreaphobia' is a condition not easily cured. For South Korea and China, this
week is the ‘decider'. The two neighbours have crossed swords twice this year already with the
score resting at 1-1. Events over the next 48 hours will determine which nation emerges as the
winner.
The Koreans have long had the upper hand when it comes to the beautiful game.

SBS Commentator Scott McIntyre proposes that Asian Champions League is so important to Melbourne

Melbourne play again tomorrow night, Tuesday, in the Asian Champions League and they must win.
Simple as that.
On a high from the win against Sydney but few Aussie clubs, even clubs across the World have to

Persiba go into today's game with Persija at Bung Karno Stadium without a familiar face. Technical
Director Daniel Roekito quit last week. Persiba currently sit 3rd. If you had told me they would
have been serious title challengers for most of the season I would have pissed myself laughing.
As it is the Persija curse strikes the Balikpapan boys again.
One of the aims of this blog is to expand its coverage beyond the S.League into the continental
level, which I'm glad to say that I managed to fulfil that task as an obscure blogger.
Just as people tend to see the glamour side of these continental tournaments (i.e.:the Asian
Champions League and the second-tier AFC Cup), I thought it would be an eye-opener to take a look
behind the scene of running the events, which is an arduous task for those who were involved.
It's been a funny old season so far for SAFFC but you can be sure coach Richard Bok hasn't found
much to laugh about. One win and one draw in the Asian Champions League have shown what they can
achieve but defeats in the SLeague, inculding losing a 3-1 half time lead to the Young Lions.
In a local newspaper today comes quotes from unnamed players questioning the effort of the new

OK so SAFFC lost 6-2 last night but the Warriors have done Singapore proud with their efforts in
the Asian Champions League. With four points and a third place finish to show it may not look the
most impressive of entries on a job application but that's where tables don't tell the whole
story.
With an annual budget that wouldn't cover the laundry expenses at an English Premier League club,
Richard Bok's men have made their first, slight, dent on the greater Asian football map.
Many people's favourites for the Indonesia Super League, Sriwijaya have performed woefully at times
this season, witness their 5-1 drubbing by Persitara last weekend. Now Rahmad Darmawan's season
could make or break in the space of 12 hectic days in the not so merry month of May.
After topping their group in the AFC Cup, a great achievement after total failure in last year's
Asian Champions League and perhaps a truer reflection of Indonesia's standing in continental
football, Sriwijaya face a one off tie against Thai side Thai Port in Palembang.

Rivaldo is one of Brazil's greatest footballers in history. He first came to the spotlight playing
in Mogi Mirim, in the state of Sao Paulo. He was then bought by Corinthians, where he flourished.
Having played his top stuff in Palmeiras, he won a series of trophies at the club before heading to
Spain.
Long-time readers of this blog will know that I'm not exactly Pim Verbeek's greatest fan, but some
of the criticism coming his way over the selection of the provisional World Cup squad is frankly
excessive. SBS's blogger-in-chief has continued to champion the cause of Eddy Bosnar and Sasa
Ognenovski in somewhat hyperbolic terms, and now we have a Milicevic-style spray from Beijing
Guoan's Joel Griffiths.
It's rare that you will find me writing anything positive about the International Football
Association Board, that misguided, anachronistic body that has helped Sepp Blatter to keep football
officiating twenty years behind the times. But they have made a good call with their decision to
punish the "feinting" so common in penalty kicks (especially in penalty shootouts).
You gotta love them fair dinkum Aussies. Their boundless optimism before going into any sporting
fixture has to be seen to be believed. And when the result doesn't work out as they
predicted...well just look at what the Sydney coach said before and after their Asian Champions
League game against Persik back in 2007.
