Rivaldo finaly explains, in a little more detail, how and why he abandoned AEK for the football
hinterland of Uzbekistan. A few things to note about this article. First, Bunyodkor general
director Tavakkal Kadirovich is quoted as saying the negotiations took two months. SO basically as
soon as last season was over [.
Defending champs Urawa Red Diamonds had the upper hand as they hosted Gamba Osaka in the semifinal
of the Asian CL semifinals today, having drawn in Osaka through The Almighty Away Goal. They made
it 2-1 in the first half, but 45 minutes and some shoddy corner defending later, Gamba were through
to their first [.
Stefan Moore, a 24-year old English striker with experience playing for Aston Villa, is coming to
Melbourne this week for a two-week trial. Moore captained Aston Villa's youth team when it won the
2002 FA Youth Cup, and has been very highly rated. According to the ever-reliable Wikipedia, "Moore
was rated by many as a better [.
Provisional squad lists for the Asian Champions League were handed in on Monday, answering a few
questions and raising a whole bunch of others.
Any players signed over the coming weeks or months will not be available for the Melbourne
Victory during the group stage of the ACL.
When Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967 with all 11 players born
within 30 miles of the Stadium, we beat Inter Milan 2-1 btw after being a goal down, it marked
history. I still mention it today to all my EPL fans:)
Man United, Liverpool or even Notts Forest have never been able to take that title the away from
us.
Adelaide United fans celebrate last nights historic win. But how many people will turn-up for the
Semi Final, they're already talking about switching venues to cope with the crowd...
And whilst Australia and particularly Canberra has been slow to grasp the opportunities that Asia
can provide to football, to the city and the region; our own A-League side would benefit the
city/region like no other sport.
Adelaide United are the first Australian team to make it to the Asian Champions League Final, where
they faced Gamba Osaka in the first leg today. So you can imagine the weight of expectation.
Unfortunately, the A-Leaguers pretty much threw away the trophy with two criminally slack passes.
Young Scott Jamieson played a square pass in [.
Melbourne Victory drew its second friendly with Adelaide United yesterday, after beating the South
Australians last week with a 2-1 win. A goal for Danny Allsopp and a penalty converted by
Adelaide's Cassio left the teams at 1-1. With Leigh Broxham away with the Olyroos, and Nick Ward
and Carlos Hernandez injured, Ernie Merrick opted for a [.
Melbourne Victory defeated Chunnam Dragons 2-0 in front of 23,000 at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne
tonight.
An open entertaining game, a youthful Victory team which had Leigh Broxham, Nicky Ward, Billy
Celeski and subs Sebastian Ryall and Kaz Patafta all involved at some point saw off the Korean Cup
Winners.
Well that wasn't expected. Chonburi FC wreaked havoc on the Melbourne Victory last night, trumping
the Aussies with a 3-1 victory that put them at the top of Group G. While Melbourne's performance
against the Chunnam Dragons mirrored the type of football they were playing towards the end of the
A-League season, last night regurgitated memories of [.
When the Melbourne Victory host Gamba Osaka tonight in the third round of the 2008 Asian Champions
League, most Victory fans will harbour more than a passing sensation of trepidation. No Archie
Thompson. No Carlos Hernández. Can Danny Allsopp deliver the top-shelf performance we need him
to deliver?
No it's not for Canberra Raiders Golden Boy Todd Carney or even Brumbies Wallaby Stirling
Mortlock.
Former Tuggeranong junior and Socceroo ace Carl Valeri, that's his expected transfer fee if he
moves from Serie B club Grosetto in the next few weeks.
Which gives an insight into the value a Canberra A-League club/players could provide to their
owners in years to come.
Quarter Finals of the Asian Champions League kick-off tonight with Australia's first club, Adelaide
United, to get to this stage of the competition away in Japan against Kashima Antlers.
Two-legged affair so United will need to score against what should be a very strong Japanese side
and a big big test for Adelaide.
Well it's not the AFL Club's, Adelaide Crows or Port Adelaide. They might have been going 150 years
but who's heard of them outside Melbourne:)
Is there even a Rugby League or Union side from Adelaide?
Adelaide United a club just a few years old, already well known across Pohang, Korea, Changchun,
China and Kashima, Japan.
Tonight in Adelaide, new football, takes another step. Appropriately, to me, it is a team from the
old NSL playing in a stadium used in the old NSL, that will take us to a place this game, in this
country, has never ever been.
Semi-Final time. Of the Asian Champions League.
Whatever your sporting passion, when there is a prize on the line, the crowd swells, and the
intensity lifts.
One important decision which Ernie Merrick will have to make in the next month is which
international player he leaves out of the Melbourne Victory squad for the Asian Champions League.
Coaches have to get their 30-player squad lists in by the 11th of February. One of the stipulations
is that each team can only have [.
The Melbourne Victory are set to play in Thailand in March, Japan in April and South Korea in May.
Are you going to any of those matches? Since Jetstar have some pretty cheap flights to Thailand,
I'm guessing that's the most likely option for most people. And considering it's the week before
Easter, it's a great [.
This post continues our series of team profiles ahead of the Asian Champions League. Last week, we
took an in-depth look at the Melbourne Victory. This week, we have a slightly less in-depth look at
the Chunnam Dragons, the Victory's first opponent in the ACL. Chunnam Dragons: City: Gwangyang,
South Korea Stadium: Gwang-Yang Stadium, capacity 14,284 Coach: Park hang-Seo The [.
This is the third in our series of Asian Champions League previews. So far, we have covered the
Melbourne Victory and Chunnam Dragons. Location: Chonburi, Thailand Stadium: Suphachalasai Stadium,
35 000 (switched there from Chonburi Municipality Stadium, due to the latter's small size and lack
of floodlights) Coach: Annop Singtotong It's hard to find much about Chonburi FC.
The calf injury Archie Thompson picked up in the Socceroo's World Cup qualifier with China earlier
this week could keep him on the sidelines for the next six weeks. At the very least, Archie will
not be available for the Melbourne Victory's April 9 Asian Champions League match against Gamba
Osaka, considered by many to be [.
On Tuesday, I asked: Can a Melbourne side without Archie Thompson and Carlos Hernández score
goals? The answer, irrefutably, is yes. Two goals from Danny Allsopp and another from Rodrigo
Vargas, on most days, should have been enough to wrap this one up. But three wasn't enough to beat
Gamba, nor to get a draw.
Nathan Burns has signed for AEK Athens. Thank god it wasn't Norwegian side Brann Bergen and of course his mate Bruce Djite has aready gone to Turkey.
Good moves for our best young talent. They stayed in Australia, impresssed in the A-League, shone at times in the Asian Champions League and played a key role in getting the Olyroos to the Olympics.
It's Adelaide United' chance to make history..tonight.
Finals football in September, and midweek to boot. Great news. So put away your Hawks and Geelong
scarves until the weekend, it's time to support the mighty Aussies, the mighty Reds.
And looking good for a sell-out withover 12,000 tickets pre-sold.
Asian Champions League Winners, four-goal heroes in Spain, Real Madrid dumped out of the Copa del
Rey and violence in Bolivian football all feature on this week's the good, the bad and the ugly.
Good It was good for Japanese side Gamba Osaka as they became the second team from Japan to win the
Asian Champions League [.
So it happened. The Newcastle Jets beat the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, meaning that the
faint dream of Melbourne reaching the finals is now over. I published an article on Newsvine last
week, called "The Problem with the Asian Champions League". As I pointed out in that article, the
Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United are [.
In his first contribution for Pitch Invasion, Eric Daams looks at the curious set-up of the Asian
Champions League, saying it needs to change to be truly representative of the best clubs in the
region.
Tickets for Melbourne Victory's home games in the Asian Champions League group stage go on sale for
general admission members tomorrow morning at 9am (Wednesday). Members with reserved seats were
able to buy tickets today. Everyone else can start buying tickets on Friday. Order tickets by
calling 136 100, visiting a Ticketmaster outlet, or online through [.
A few weeks ago, Melbourne Victory CEO Geoff Miles promised fans change. On Monday, he delivered:
"Following consultation with our supporter groups, meetings with Telstra Dome and approval from
Football Federation Australia, we're pleased to announce several changes at Telstra Dome for our
three AFC Champions League home matches.
Ran into a few sad sacks this week grumbling that there was no football to watch as the A-League is
over.
But the smile started to return when I mentioned the Asian Champions League starting on
Wednesday.
Live on Fox, Melbourne Victory take on Chunnam Dragons (China) and then Adelaide take on Pohang
Steelers (Korea).
This post on Gamba Osaka wraps up our series of Asian Champions League team profiles. Check out
previous posts on Chonburi FC, Chunnam Dragons and Melbourne Victory. City: Osaka, Japan Stadium:
Osaka Expo '70 Stadium (capacity 21,000) Coach: Akira Nishino While the Melbourne Victory kicks off
its Asian Champions League campaign tomorrow against Korean FA Cup winners Chunnam Dragons, [.
Melbourne Victory embarks on its maiden voyage into the realm of Asian competition tonight, hosting
Korean FA Cup winners the Chunnam Dragons. With 20,000 tickets sold and a relaxing of Telstra Dome
rules for supporters, this should be a dramatic and memorable night. There's a whiff of confidence
in the air.
Chonburi FC hosts the Melbourne Victory tomorrow night in Bangkok. It may not be their home
stadium, but the Thai champions will be hoping that the heat and humidity of Bangkok will give them
an edge over the Victory. Both teams enter the match on the back of a good result: Melbourne downed
the Chunnam Dragons [.
Following the disappointing result against Gamba Osaka two weeks ago, Melbourne tomorrow has the
chance to make amends and keep the dream of Asian Champion League glory alive. With 3 more matches
to play, not picking up points in this match would spell the end of the campaign. Even if Melbourne
were to win the [.
For a game with nothing at stake, last night's Melbourne Victory game was one of the most enjoyable
Victory matches I've seen in a while. Maybe it's because there was nothing to play for (except
pride of course). This was free-flowing football, with plenty of chances at both ends and nice
saves from both 'keepers.
Adelaide taking their city to Asia, and I ain't talking about the Crows!
Anyone who saw Urawa Reds or Gamba Osaka take on Sydney and Melbourne in previous Asian Champions
League encounters will have expected the cashed up Japanese club Kashima Antlers to give Adelaide a
good thumping in the home game of the Asian Champions League Quarter Finals.
Brazil great Zico has reached a deal to coach Uzbekistan's Bunyodkor for one year.
Zico, who was without a club since leaving Turkey's Fenerbahce this year, was on his way to
Uzbekistan on Monday.
"There is a verbal agreement with club directors and I'm traveling to sign the contract,"
Zico said in a statement on his Web site.
A very big truck from SAKAI.
The other codes said Aussies didn't care about the Asian Champions League.
Well here's evidence to show they do.
Adelaide United just 900 tickets left for tonights Quater Final against Kashima Antlers. What code
wouldn't like a midweek sell-out!
After thoroughly enjoying the AFC Champions league match between Adelaide and Kashima on Wednesday
it got me thinking, where is my "FoxSports Football" channel.
Late last year a lot of rumours were circulating that FoxSports was set to launch a dedicated
Football channel. The channel was rumoured to have a much more expanded coverage of Football across
the globe including :
1.
Nationally, we talk Asian Champions League, A-League Expansion, we hear from Young Matildas Coach
Alen Stajic and we wrap the A-League.

Locally Aaron Walker debuts in the host chair alongside Russ Gibbs.
Christine Ng looks forward to Canberra United and we hear the remarkable football story of Canberra
returnee Tim Skinner.
This is bad: Carlos Hernández injured himself at training last week and is expected to miss six
weeks. Ernie Merrick said: "It was just one of those training incidents with no one near him. He
turned and his foot got stuck and twisted his knee." Six weeks means that the Costa Rican will miss
Melbourne's first three matches [.
