NEW YORK, NY – The Asian Cup 2011, Asia's premiere soccer tournament, will be airing on Pay-Per-View (PPV) on cable for the first time ever in the U.S. beginning today. This high profile quadrennial event features 16 teams from Asia competing for one of international soccer's most sought-after championships.

Got up and watched the opening match of the 2011 Asian Cup last night and was very glad that I did. Fantastic game and one that deserves more attention from the media here in Australia.

This is a fixture which has never produced a winner over 90 minutes, with two 1-1 draws between the teams, but Jordan will most likely be aching for revenge for the controversial penalty shoot-out defeat in 2004's Asian Cup quarterfinal.

In the past, I used to dislike seeing an unusual country advance in football. In 1994 I said, I cannot stand seeing the Americans win in football. In 1998, I was shocked when I saw a new team raise the World Cup, France.
Today, I am totally the opposite, I cheer and love when I see a new country develop their football.

Our final group match won't quite be what we all expected it to be before the tournament began. This was supposed to be a clash between the two big teams of the group to merely decide who would finish first and who would finish second. Japan are of course top of the group, ahead of Jordan on goals scored, but for Saudi Arabia this tournament has been an unmitigated disaster so far.

All four head coaches attended a pre-tournament press conference today at the Yongchuan Sports Centre Stadium which will host all six matches of the tournament. Asia is evolving into the fastest developing football continent as they're exporting dozens of young stars into Europe's most challenging leagues, hosting their second World Cup tournament in 2022 and China and India, the world's most populous countries have recently started investing heavily in the world's most watched sport.

The Rapids' Kosuke Kimura is big in Japan. Which is kinda fitting since is from there and all. I have no idea what they're saying about him because I am an ignorant, English-only American but I did hear the word "Beckham" in there towards the beginning. So I'm going to assume they were talking about Colorado trading Kimura to LA for Becks because that's the only logical reason his name would be brought up*.

Tonight's the night. Asian Cup Semi and the Uzbek manager reckons we're not as good as we used to be!
We know that but the guys who have come through in this tournament with a future in the Green and Gold at some level include:

Neil Kilkenny
Sasa Ognenovski
So we've found four players, we may find more, not World beaters but competent with others around them to get us to a World Cup - we need to be top four in Asia - this we are, but with Harry and Timmy getting older and many many games going our way when they could easily of gone the other.

The play station amazing team, or the "Barca of Asia" as Metsu called them, had a deserved victory over South Korea in one of the most entertaining and high quality football in Asia. The Japanese first goal was a very special one. They tied 1-1 at first half. Then, played extra time. South Korea scored in the 120th minute the equalizer.

*"Somebody's f**ked up big" were Andy Gray's famous last words, referring to the appointment of the subsequently impressive Sian Massey to run the line at Wolves v Liverpool on Saturday. Now that somebody who has messed up is him, as the face of Sky Sports is out of work after the station fired their figurehead in a rare moment of sanity.

Chelsea as announced that Proevents has been appointed as the official event management partner of the 2011 Asia Trophy, a bi-annual pre-season soccer tournament held in Asia.

Fans looking for jerseys, hats or even a replica of the cute desert rat mascots from the Asian Cup are likely to leave Qatar empty-handed. No such items are being sold at Asia's premier tournament, nothing at the stadiums or even at the Asian Cup stands in the city's glitzy malls.
