Atlético in control of Champions League Playoff Leg

Strikes from Maxi Rodríguez, Diego Forlán and Sergio Agüero left Club Atlético de Madrid in firm command of their UEFA Champions League play-off round tie against Panathinaikos after a thrilling 3-2 win in Athens.

Maxi had given the visitors a first-half lead and although Dimitris Salpingidis equalised just after the break, the Spanish side hit back with two goals in eight minutes.

Super sub Andrei Arshavin scored two fantastic goals for Arsenal to send the home side top of the Emirates cup after a 2-1 victory over Athletico Madrid.

The Russian playmaker looked to have won the game after breaking the deadlock five minutes from time. But their Spanish opponents replied instantly through Pacheco before Arshavin sealed the win with a last gasp strike from an impossible angle.

Atletico Madrid have signed goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo from Real Valladolid on a four-year contract for a fee in the region of 5.5 million euros and the loan of striker Diego Costa for one season.
