Season Recaps: San Jose Earthquakes

WVHooligan 28 October @ 01:05 PM EST

Ryan Johnson was one of the few bright spots for San Jose in 2009. (Getty Images)

It's hard to decline as a club after being an expansion team in 2008 but the 2009 version of the San Jose Earthquakes did just that. They became the first team to lose more in their second season than in their expansion season.

Props where props are due: FC Frisco (But let's not go overboard here)

Nutmegged 07 October @ 04:32 PM EST
FC Dallas, of all teams, are starting to get some major run, first for their improbable run to the brink of a playoff berth (Hey don't laugh. How great would it be to play those guys in the first round?) and the second for hosting a viewing of US v Honduras at Robertson North on Saturday night. Click to continue reading...

Unless you are a die-hard New York Red Bulls fan or a San Jose Earthquakes fan, chances are you missed their game last Saturday night, which means you probably didn't see Arturo Alvarez draw what wound up being the match-winning penalty converted by Ryan Johnson.

Bob Bradley Deserves Praise and Credit

Major League Soccer Talk 09 September @ 09:46 AM EST

Bob Bradley has far too many critics. Some people who believe the US is a big time program and should be led by the likes of Guus Hiddink, just do not get the realities of dysfunctional US Soccer Federation who blew the hiring of Jurgen Klinsmann for the simple fact that they are control freaks and do not take well to any type of criticism.

MLS Anti-Awards Tracker

Dan Loney Says It All 08 September @ 06:16 PM EST
The MLS individual awards race is heating up! Even though we shouldn't give this things out until after the playoffs. Remember all those Houston Dynamo players we had on the Best XI last year? And all those DC United players we had the year before that?
Kristian Dyer nominates Schelotto, Thornton, Keller, Joseph, Montero and Donovan as the MVP frontrunners - Landon's his pick at the moment, with which I agree. Click to continue reading...

AUDIO: Glenn Davis's Revealing Interview with Arturo Arturo Alvarez

MLS Rumors 02 September @ 01:55 PM EST
Ever wonder why some exciting young attacking players in MLS and US Soccer don't seem to be so exciting and don't seem to attack as they demonstrated before being coached out of it? Well now thanks to MLSR contributor, Glenn Davis you need not wonder any longer as we hear from former FC Dallas, San Jose Earthquakes and US National team attacking midfielder Arturo Alvarez why he chose to leave MLS and the USA behind. Football Americana Week 16: Happy Days for Cunningham

Another stunted week in Major League Soccer, and another week of surprising results and solid if unspectacular footballing goodness Stateside. The focus was very much on the Eastern Conference as DC, Chicago and Columbus were all in action looking to cement their playoff challenge.

Notable.
Mención honrosa para el de Conde. Puro huevo para ganar por arriba.

MLS Goals of the Week: Week 16

Not too many goals to bring up this week but there did end up being a couple quality ones. A couple great headers though that could end up winning goal of the week nod from the fans.

Order of video: Alejandro Moreno, Alecko Eskandarian, Wilman Conde, Jeff Cunningham, Kai Kamera, and Arturo Alvarez.

Click to continue reading...

Friday MLS: San Jose 1 - Real Salt Lake 1

USSoccerPlayers 04 July @ 05:39 AM EST
The San Jose Earthquakes scored both goals at Rio Tinto Stadium on Friday night. Arturo Alvarez put the Earthquakes up in the 63rd and Quakes defender Chris Leitch was responsible for the unlikely equalizer in the 91st. RSL lost the most effective part of their offense in the 77th minute when Fabian Espindola was red carded. Click to continue reading...

USMNT Gold Cup roster

DCUMD 23 June @ 05:56 AM EST

As found on the Insider, the USSF released the names today for the preliminary Gold Cup roster.

And of course its just the same old names. Why would we expect anything more? It seems that Bradley automatically gives preference to anybody on a team in Europe, regardless of how good that player is, how good that team is, or if that player receives any playing time with that team.

Jermaine Jones wants to play for the USA

Soccer By Ives 12 June @ 08:50 AM EST

Â

The deepest position in the U.S. men's national team pool is about to get even deeper.

Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones has notified the German Football Federation that he intends to change national teams and plans to play for the U.S. national team. Jones is taking advantage of the new FIFA rule that allows players of any age to change national teams if they are eligible for multiple national teams and have yet to play in an official match for either.

Win Ugly’s Cousin

Attacking 90 10 June @ 08:47 PM EST

Is this an American thing?

If you can't even win ugly, at least lose cheap.

Maybe it is Win Ugly's uglier cousin.

Here's the back drop:

The San Jose Earthquakes, rebuilding their franchise in their 2nd year back in the MLS, are at the bottom of the table. Out of a dozen games they've lost 7 and only picked up 9 points.

Better Strike: Alvarez or Jaqua?

MLS Daily 01 June @ 07:02 AM EST
Looking back on the action from MLS Week 11, two goals clearly stood above the rest. In Seattle, Nate Jaqua helped Seattle Sounders FC salvage a draw against the visiting Columbus Crew by volleying a lofted pass from Freddie Ljungberg into the back of the net with authority. Several hundred miles down the coast, Arturo Alvarez scored what ended up being the game-winning goal in the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake by curling a wonderful left-footed shot past Nick Rimando and into the upper 90.
