The new Mayor of Southend – Councillor Ann Holland – has revealed the good causes she is raising funds for whilst in office.

During today's lunchtime launch at Porters (19 May) – the Mayor's official residence in Southchurch Road – Cllr Holland announced that the Southend Mayor's Charity 2010/11 is supporting Stroke, Disability and the Arts.

It's been announced that Southend will not be the first 'City of Culture'.
The south Essex resort had bid for the inaugural title for 2013, but the Government says only four towns will compete in the final - they are Birmingham, Londonderry, Norwich and Sheffield.
Culture Minister Margaret Hodge revealed the line-up after bids from 14 listed cities were scrutinised by an independent judging panel.

Polish Arts Festival comes to Southend

This weekend (11/12/13 Sep) Southend plays host to its first ever Polish Arts Festival.

Around 3,000 people originally from Poland are estimated to live in Southend and surrounding areas, and the Essex town is twinned with Sopot - a Polish coastal resort on the Baltic Sea.

Over the weekend around 10 activities are taking place across the borough.
