Russia missed the World Cup, but they did Write the Future
The 2010 World Cup seems like ancient history as we enter 2012, but hidden gems need to be
uncovered. Remember that "Write the Future" advertising campaign? Well, Russian graphic artist Aske
(aka Sicksystems) created two football-related pieces of art to capture the interest of the Russian
market.
Interview with artist Craig Coulthard, the mind behind Forest Pitch, an event that will be
part of the London 2012 Festival and Cultural Olympiad. Conducted by Eric Beard.

"Me, You, and Jason Euell" by Patrick Cullinan
Shot on the way to, from, and at Port Vale vs AFC Wimbledon in England's League 2 this past
Saturday, the 14th of January, this film captures the sights and sounds of a typical football
awayday.
Beyond the style of the short film in itself, we also love that Patrick Cullinan is an avid
reader of AFR (not to mention an excellent contributor to the Off The Post podcast).
The Goalkeeper and the Void by Martz Azparren
Featuring the words of Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida, The Goalkeeper and the
Void was a Jury winning film at the 2011 Machinima Expo, and primarily uses footage from
the video game Pro Evolution Soccer (Winning Eleven).
Italian artist Riccardo Guasco imagines football
Riccardo describes his inspiration to capture the physical world as a means to adequately come
to terms with his curiosity, but also to communicate with the world in a way that may leave a mark.
Living in Milan for a few years, it's not difficult to see how calcio crept in to his life.
The EURO 2012-inspired illustrated postcards by Simon Evans
Rooney. Malouda. Zlatan. Cristiano. All will bring their talents to Ukraine and Poland in less
than 100 days for EURO 2012. Artist Simon Evans sent us these brilliant "illustrated postcards"
that he created as part of a larger project for Goals 5-a-side Soccer Centres.
Imagined Football Pitches in the Amazon
It's no secret that the Amazon rainforest is shrinking every year. However, we are rarely given
such a poignant image magnifying just how drastic the Amazon's environmental climate is changing.
Xavier Barrade is a London-based artist who decided to take the concept often used describing the
loss of Amazonian rainforest based on the number of football pitch equivalents by literally
drawing the pitches onto real aerial photography of the Amazon.
Waves of Passion at Wembley.
This time, the wave is actually present outside the stadium. It's a truly phenomenal long
exposure photograph taken by optickarma. Fans exiting Wembley after the match between
England and Holland create a stream towards the underground station.
Messi playing in a Starry Night, by Allie Powell.
Aspiring artist, football fan, and AFR reader Allie Powell created a masterpiece, and we just
had to share it with the world.
As Allie explains, "I was doing a lesson about impressionism for the class
I'm student-teaching in and I decided to include Messi in some way.
The Arsenal Ballet.
Always appreciative of attempts to fuse together the beautiful game with fine arts, this spot
for the Citroën DS5 was pretty well-executed. While the location looks like a luxurious room at
Versailles, Arsenal's Alex Song, Wojciech Szczesny, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Bacary Sagna
learn ballet with dancers from the English National Ballet.
Real Unhate, by Eduardo Salles.
Rivals, unite: Real Madrid x Barcelona. Manchester United x Liverpool.
Boca Juniors x River Plate. América x Chivas. Inter x Milan. That's the
message.
Some will see these 5 hybrids of club crests as borderline blasphemy.
(In)Animate.
Sangwook Kim's experimental video project challenging the structure of animate and inanimate
objects. Notice how the ball never sways from the middle of the screen. [Thanks for the

Landon Donovan's moment, in animation.
Albert Lanzillo drew over 250 individually drawn frames to recreate Landon Donovan's winner in
stoppage time that ensured the United States would not be knocked out of the World Cup. Inspired by
Richard Swarbrick's work, the result is brilliant.
