ESPN has been setting the bar for football coverage worldwide, not only due to the fact that it
has signed up John Motson and Andy Gray to commentate, but also because it has really taken to the
culture surrounding the game. It's a little too much for one post, but I'll do it anyway.
If you kno me then you know how much I love Arsenal. Still, I consider myself a new fan. Having
grown up mostly in the US, I had little professional soccer influence despite playing for much of
my childhood. It wasn't until college that a friend introduced me to a gem of a video game,
Konami's Winning Elevel 8.
The great musician Gil Scott-Heron is touring with an album (I'm New Here). He's stirring up all
sorts of excitement in fans of "the godfather of rap," who are thrilled to hear new music from the
genre-defining/bending artist who has struggled in recent years with addiction.
The artist behind "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" has a rather cool soccer connection: his
Jamaican father, Giles "Gil" Heron was the first Black player at Celtic, and played for Detroit
teams in the North American Soccer League and the American Soccer League.
Take a look at the picture that appeared on Marca.com today:
I have a couple issues with this image...
1. There is no way Donovan could palm Rooney's head.
2. Photoshopping Donovan's head on to Rooney's body is lazy. Surely there are enough shirtless
Donovan pictures out there to actually use his physique.
The world is wondering what's up with the "Sex Machines" banner that appeared behind one of the
goals at today's match between Serbia and Ghana (won by the latter, the youngest side in the World
Cup).
Perhaps it is a reference to Hamburg fan club FSV Sexmachines, as one of my fellow tweeters
suggested.
Pied La Biche's Refait (2010) reconstructs the last fifteen of a 1982 World Cup semifinal between
West Germany and France. The last fifteen minutes of that match were penalty kicks, the worst sort
of tournament drama. (The Guardian gives a detailed survey of this historic match here.) For this
work, the artists' collective repeats the movements and gestures of all the players, referees and
staff
"More than 20,000 North Texas soccer fans packed Pizza Hut Park in Frisco to watch locals FC
Dallas battle the reigning European champions, Inter Milan. FC Dallas, an MLS power riding a
nine-game unbeaten streak, rose to the occasion in this 2-2 draw. Inter Milan superstars Eto and
Millito both scored crowd-pleasing goals.
Footballers can be a strange breed. Artists can also be a strange breed. Take a footballer, turn
him into an artist and you have a Tim Burton film.
Derby County keeper Stephen Bywater fancies himself both a footballer and an artist. His
neighbors think he's just a perverted pornographer who puts blowup dolls on his front yard.
"Good Ol' Emile Heskey." By Jon Horner. Apologies and eternal love to
Schulz.

How has wedding fashion changed over the past 200 years? Do we dress much differently for our
special day - two centuries on? Have trends gone full circle? A new exhibition at the Beecroft Art
Gallery in Westcliff aims to answer these questions.
Outfits dating back from 1813, right up to the present day are on show in the 'For Richer, For
Poorer' galleries at the Station Road building.
The Wexner Center, on the campus of Ohio State University, is hosting Hard Targets, a gorgeous
exhibit of contemporary art centered on images of men and sport curated by Christopher Bedford (who
gives me a run for the money in terms of fanaticism). The installation of Douglas Gordon and Philip
Parreno's art-film Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is intensely moving and worth a visit in and of
itself.
Westcliff's annual Art Trail has begun with more venues and artists taking part than ever
before.
36 venues have been chosen including cafes, travel shops and individual's houses. It's free to view
the art on show, with the option to buy prints and paintings direct from the artist. The trail
should take no longer than two hours to complete and runs ffrom 14th until 22nd May.
Daniel Lara is a multimedia designer and artist. He lives in Los Angeles, and is one of the best
players I've had the pleasure of meeting while playing pick-up soccer. His website
(http://www.daniellara.com/) charts his incredible range as a visual thinker.
A few months ago, Daniel told me he was thinking about making work using soccer balls.
The Los Angeles Times just published a story under the headline Why Is there No Great Hollywood
Soccer Movie? The sport, says the article's author John Horn, has no
Hoosiers, no
Raging
Bull. He writes
When it comes to soccer, though, the sport's most memorable Hollywood movie probably
has been Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and Pelé's cheesy 1981 World War II drama "Victory" —
only a marginally better treatment of the sport, in some detractors' view, than "Happy Gilmore" was
for golf.
Check out this lovely interview with Riyas Komu, about work on exhibit right now at Gallery Maskara
in Mumbai. The title signals the movement from the local players - the ones you can actually see,
live, at home (like Subrata Paul, India's #1 keeper) to the heroes, who are global brands (as in
Brazil's Júlio César).
From the first 2010 World Cup broadcasts on ESPN, my fellow tweeters cracked jokes about
The
Lion King. We imagined Rafiki calling the matches, or James Earl Jones (who provided the voice
for Mufasa), and half expected the referees to raise the Jabulani aloft to announce the arrival of
the New Ball.
The Footsak exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Durban inspired me to make this 5-minute
film about art + football. I shot it with a FlipVideo camera at the museum, World Cup matches, a
tennis court in Joburg, a sports ground at UKZN Pietermaritzburg, and our veranda. Take a look.
Oi, have a look at this infographic displaying English Premier League champions over the years
by graphic designer Shawn Huddleston. Huddleston decided to break down previous champions by team,
city, and region, and didn't it come out wonderfully?

Flashback: This video captures the euphoria in the streets of Ghana just after the Black Stars
knocked the US out of the World Cup. Great music in the background - the two most prominent are
football-inspired: Richy Pitch's awesome "Football Jama", and Wanlov The Kubolor's "Goal Again".
Thank you to photographer Rodney Quarcoo for filming and sharing this.
This is brilliant. James Blagden illustrates Dock Ellis's incredible (true) story about pitching
on acid. Courtesy of No Mas TV .
I just came across this Typography representation of Messi's Maradona-esque
goal that the little Messiah scored against Getafe a few season ago. I know EURO 2012
qualifying and international fixtures are filling the calender this week, but this is just too
wonderfully done to not share.

There was a man in the land of Stoke, whose name was Pulis; and he eschewed evil. The Lord
said unto Satan, there is none like Job Pulis in the earth, a perfect and upright man, one that
playeth beautiful football.

or two perhaps none of the players are really meant to represent anyone in particular.

In the interest of keeping things light, here are some highlights from the 2009 season of India's
Dancing with the Stars. The winner that year was Baichung Bhutia, the country's most accomplished
footballer. Bhutia is responsible for forming a player's union in India and is a public figure in
the best sense - using his celebrity to raise money for good causes, taking stands on issues that
matter to him (like Tibetan independence), and devoting much time and energy to the development of
resources for Indian soccer players.
