By 1970's Gooner Tresor Mputu's performances were so impressive for his club TP Mazembe and for his
country DR Congo that a host of local and foreign clubs have been very keen to sign him. The list
includes Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns and also three Belgian teams as well as Bayern
Munich. Mputu, 21, has reportedly already had trials in France and Belgium.
Despite having scored the most goals of any team in the Premiership so far this season, Arsenal
coach Arsene Wenger seems to be in hot pursuit of another striker or two.
21 year-old Congo striker Tresor Mputu is currently on trial with the Gunners, and Wenger looks set
upon recalling teenage striking sensation Carlos Vela from his loan at Osasuna now that work permit
restrictions have been worked out.
Congo striker Tresor Mputu's agent claims that Arsenal have made a concrete offer for the 21
year-old TP Mazembe star.
Mputu, who has scored 34 goals in 30 league games for his team, was in London on a 10 day trial
which Arsene Wenger and Bajo Bujani, the player's agent, both considered to be successful.
Arsenal prodigy Carlos Vela will not return from a loan at Osasuna until next Summer, said Arsene
Wenger.
Many fans were expecting to see the 18 year-old meet up with the squad in London in January, but it
now seems that he will not even be cleared to play in England until March.
Arsene Wenger said that Arsenal scouts watch every game he plays, and that upon joining up with the
Gunners in England he will immediately be part of the first-team squad.
David Beckham in an Arsenal shirt - who would have thought it? OK, so it might just be a training
top but the former Manchester United winger is likely to be training with the Gunners squad in
January, according to BBC reports. With the LA Galaxy currently in their close season, Beckham
needs to find [.
By 1970's Gooner Ever since we broke the story of how close Wilson Palacios is to getting a
transfer to Arsenal we have received messages and comments from Honduras itself. They are about the
player and how the fans of Olimpia, his club in Honduras, view the prospect of him playing for
Arsenal. Here are some interesting views: "Hi everybody... I am from honduras.
By 1970's Gooner After reporting that neither Wilson Palacios ‘s parents or his club, Olimpia,
could confirm his whereabouts, the Honduran Newspaper "Tiempo", has now been informed by Palacios's
father that he is alright and living in London Colney! His father, Eulogio, was relieved to hear
from him at last. His son who sounded well and lighthearted confirmed to him that he has been
having a
By 1970's Gooner Carlos Vela, the Mexican wonder kid who is on Arsenal's books, has scored a
fantastic goal for Spanish La Liga side Osasuna helping them win away at Real Betis 0-3. The
striker was then left out as Osasuna slumped to a 2-0 home defeat by Getafe. Maybe they should play
him more often. As you can see on the video he takes the ball from the left wide midfield position,

Arsenal have what is arguably the best midfield lineup in the Premier League (and maybe even all of
Europe).
A 20 year-old Cesc Fabregas leads a midfield which is so strong that even Brazil captain Gilberto
Silva cannot break in to the lineup this season. Alex Hleb and Mathieu Flamini have undergone
incredible changes this season to become two of the best in the Premiership and Tomas Rosicky can
be brilliant on his day.
By Aries You may remember when we last reported that Arsene Wenger was appointed Castrol Ambassador
for Euro 2008. He has recently in this capacity been speaking to Eurosport assessing each team's
chances for glory in the Euro 2008 championships next summer. He has pinpointed Karim Benzema, the
Lyon striker, as the player that could make a big impact saying that he could be "an immense
Levski Sofia forward Nikolay Dimitrov has long been rumored to be coming to the Emirates.
The Bulgarian club's official website has now reported that the 20 year-old left-winger will be
training in London with Arsenal on a week-long trial, on the invitation of Arsene Wenger. Arsenal's
official site has yet to post an article regarding the news.
Excellent news coming out of Arsenal. And it is not only from the footballing side. Wenger,
remember, has an economics degree and he is not one to ignore the financial side of the football
business. Sagna apparently has undergone a medical and is set to join for £7.5m. His pay will be
£25,000 per week which translates to £1.3m a year. But at the same time Freddie Ljumberg is
finally set to
Arsenal are, without a doubt, one of the offensive powerhouses of English football, despite having
lost talismanic striker Thierry Henry to Barcelona during the Summer.
The Gunners are currently on top of the Premiership and its goalscoring charts, having scored 27
goals in 12 Premier League matches. Outside of the Premier League Arsenal have scored 19 goals in 7
outings, including a 7-0 drubbing of Slavia Prague at the Emirates.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reluctant to splash out cash during the January transfer window.
The Gunners will be without first-choice center back Kolo Toure for large parts of January and
February due to the African Cup of Nations, and it was speculated that the Arsenal manager would
purchase a short-term replacement for the Ivorian in January.
Arsenal will look to extend their 9 game winning streak even further this Sunday as they take on
newly-promoted Sunderland at the Emirates. Roy Keane's fifteenth place team will be lucky to get
any points out of this game, and will likely play with many men behind the ball.
Arsenal's physio room had a nice day on Wednesday as nobody was injured in the 1-0 win over Steau
Bucharest, and only the long term injury sufferers are still out.
Arsenal wrapped up a 3-1 victory at Reading yesterday on a bit of a sour note.
Cesc Fabregas, undoubtedly Arsenal's most influential player this season, was booked for the fifth
time this season, resulting in a one match suspension.
Could it have been done on purpose?
To answer that question we should look at Arsenal's next few Premiership fixtures:
11/24 vs Wigan
12/1 @ Aston Villa
12/5 @ Newcastle
12/9 @ Middlesbrough
12/16 vs Chelsea
12/22 vs Tottenham
12/26 @ Portsmouth
12/29 @ Everton
1/1 vs West Ham
Of these eight fixtures, one stands out as by far the easiest: at home to Wigan.
Arsene Wenger has announced his intentions for the January transfer window, implying that the
Gunners' midfield lineup is adequate, but he would like to bolster Arsenal's defense.
The Gunners boss had early stated that he would not be looking for anyone during the transfer
season, saying: "I don't think I will get anybody in but if I get one opportunity in one area then
I will not neglect it.
By 1970's Gooner Greek sports newspapers have been reporting, for some time now, increased interest
from Arsenal in one of the hottest young Greek players to have emerged in the last decade. He is 19
year old central defender Socratis Papastathopoulos who plays for AEK Athens. Socratis impressed
during the 2007 UEFA European Under-
The 2008 African Cup of Nations will last from January 20 until February 10, calling up African
players from all over the Premiership. Arsenal looked set to lose Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure, and
Emmanuel Adebayor for that period of time, and there were some concerns that we would be light both
up front and in central defense.
However, the effects of the ACN have been dampened by the fact that Togo has failed to qualify.
The Daily Mail is today reporting on Blackburn's boss Mark Hughes, who was so impressed with
Arsenal's youngsters and their brilliant performance against his Blackburn team in the Carling Cup
that he compared them to Man Utd's batch of young 'uns from 1992. Daily Mailster Peter Ferguson
writes that Man [.
So here we have it. League leaders Arsenal are ready to take on Derby, a team that has been labeled
as the worst ever to play in the Premiership. They have been living up to this label, losing 4-0 to
Tottenham and 6-0 to Liverpool and 1-0 to Manchester City in their first three away games this
season. They were admittedly given a tough opening schedule, and a visit to the Emirates will not
do
By The Coach Sure, McClaren was never a brilliant football manager and yes, a better choice could
have been made in May 2006. But isn't this typical of a nation that goes into mass denial once
again? The problem of English football is deeply rooted and has to do with an archaic footballing
culture that is fostered and maintained by all, including those who are now taking to pieces poor
By 1970's Gooner on the friendly game at Salzburg It was like watching one of the many games that
Arsenal played last season. Domination throughout the pitch, playing the beautiful fame but lacking
penetrative threat up front with no killer instinct when needed. And finally making mistakes at the
back which allowed the inferior opposition to steal an unexpected win.
By 1970's Gooner You are only as strong as your weakest link. This is certainly very true in the
highly pressured and ultra competitive Premier League where your every weakness is immediately
exploited. Arsenal will enter this encounter with some forced and maybe unforced weak links. But
first some background. Both teams are likely to field the same formation: 4 4 1 1 but one would
expect that
By 1970's Gooner It is slightly unfortunate that Arsenal are now entering the most important series
of games in their calendar without their main striker in Robin Van Persie. It is a period where
this young team will have to show its credentials against the big boys of Liverpool and Manchester
United. The latter following an away game in the Champions League to Slavia Prague.
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he does not yet have any particular transfer targets, although he
would like to strengthen one of his squad's positions.
However, the Arsenal manager refused to say which position he would splash cash in.
"It is not impossible," he said in response to a question asking if he would spend in January.
By 1970's Gooner The two most obvious aspects to come out of the game against Lazio in the
Amsterdam Tournament are the frailties in defence and the ease in scoring that has returned to this
young Arsenal team. It is obvious and was to be expected of course that a back four littered with
relatively inexperienced defenders would make some mistakes.
By 1970's Gooner Everybody would of course blame "poor" Jens Lehmann for dropping a clanger and
gifting Blackburn a very fortuitous equalizer. And it certainly looked that, despite Blackburn's
resurgence in the second half, Arsenal were going to hold out for a very scrappy but morale
boosting away win. But having watched the encounter live I formed the opinion that it need not have
turned out
Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger is set to offer Congo striker Tresor Mputu a 10 day trial with the
North London giants.
The 21 year-old forward currently plays for TP Mazembe in the Congo, but with interest from teams
across Europe, it seems like he will be leaving Africa soon.
Salomon Idi Kalonda, director of Mputu's current club, has gone public on the trial.
Thank you to all that come here every once in a while to read what we got to say. It's Boxing Day
and we're in for a good day of soccer (going on as I share these headlines with you). DUECE: Clint
Dempsey struck for his 6th goal of the season in (the game is close [...]
By 1970's Gooner For regular visitors to this site my views have been made clear. Robin Van Persie
is not really a centre forward in the sense that he is not a strong physical front target man. He
is better deployed behind or next to a strong centre forward and not as a lone striker. I also
believe that Wenger needs to sign another experienced forward.
By 1970's Gooner Eduardo Da Silva bagged another goal for his adopted country, Croatia, to make it
nine goals in this qualifying campaign. Croatia put six past the hapless Andorrans in front of a
crowd of just 200 spectators and are now top of England's group. Srna opened the scoring from a
free kick. Portsmouth's Niko Kranjcar also got on the score sheet.
By 1970's Gooner A few months ago Arsenal Holdings Plc announced bumper financial figures for the
year ended May 2006. The results include the hugely positive effect of the extra revenues arising
from the move to the Emirates. Arsenal now take in £3.1m per match day as opposed to about half of
that during the Highbury days and this extra revenue has generated a lot of cash that are available
- According to Arsene Wenger, Arsenal is at a breaking point concerning it's ownership. The French
manager is vehemently against foreigners buying controlling stake in the club and singles out the
Glazer model at Manchester United as what is wrong with football. His reaction come as Russian
billionaire Alisher Usmanov has increased is stake to 23% in the London club.
Group H leaders Arsenal take on third-placed Slavia Prague at the Emirates this coming Tuesday.
Arsenal will be confident coming into this match, having won eleven straight games in all
competitions. A 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers this past Saturday will do nothing to ruin their
morale.
Arsenal would do well not to underestimate the Czech team though.
By 1970's Gooner It was only a matter of time I suppose. Arsene Wenger is a world renowned figure,
a perfectionist who excels at his chosen profession producing an output that is considered top top
quality. In the business world these are the attributes that chief Executive Officers are made of.
But if you want to advertise and promote your company then associating your company's products
By 1970's Gooner This Arsenal B team was so dominant against Sheffield United it was embarrassing.
I felt sorry, in a way, for the hapless players and supporters of this historic team. Sorry for the
way they were made to look so ordinary, so pedestrian and so technically lacking. Each and every
one of those Arsenal players were of course hand picked and eventually brought to the club by
Arsene Wenger's top of the table Gunners will take on Steve Coppell's 12th placed Royals in the
English Premier League this Monday.
Arsenal are unbeaten in 26 games, but their progress has been halted recently thanks to a 1-1 draw
at Liverpool, a 2-2 draw with Manchester United, and a 0-0 draw at Slavia Prague. The Gunners will
be looking to get back on track with a win at the Madejski.
By 1970's Gooner This away fixture at Blackburn is the equivalent of a real fitness test for this
young but maturing Arsenal side. All the football pundits are expecting Arsenal to return to their
old ways. Their first away fixture in the North with rain gushing down, a partisan crowd and an
opponent prepared to stick it up your nose. This is where titles are won or lost.
By 1970's Gooner There are indeed, as Steve Coppell has said, three different ways available for
Reading to play against Arsenal. But are they all viable options? Coppell knows that if Reading
play a 4 4 2 as they did the last time these two sides met at the Madejski Stadium they will get
hammered again. The open spaces that such a system will leave for Fabregas et al to exploit will in
the
