Yes, the Apertura's only just finished (well, if you're an Arsenal or Gimnasia fan, it hasn't even
finished yet), but already the fixtures for the 2008 Torneo Clausura have been released, so here
they are for your interest and enjoyment. The dates given for each weekend, as ever, are all
Sundays - fixtures will be [.
The draw for the 2008 Copa Libertadores - with Santander taking over from Toyota as title sponsor
- took place in Asunción on Wednesday, and Argentina will have six representatives in the
tournament - River Plate, Boca Juniors, San Lorenzo and Estudiantes all qualify automatically from
the 2006-2007 season, whilst Lanús and Arsenal de Sarandí go [.
It was a very nervy match in Racing's stadium, as Arsenal's players showed the pressure of playing
the biggest match in the history of their club - but they dug deep when it most mattered, and came
away with the trophy thanks to Martín Andrizzi's late strike. Despite a 2-1 loss in front of their
[.
A disappointing Apertura is almost behind them, but Arsenal de Sarandí have an opportunity to make
history on Wednesday night all the same. They carry a 3-2 aggregate lead into the second leg of the
Copa Sudamericana final against América de Mexico, after Friday night's astonishing win the
Azteca.
In front of 100,000 home fans, América took an early lead in the Copa Sudamericana final first
leg, and it all looked like the dream of an upset was ending before it had really begun. But they
reckoned without an Arsenal side playing with extraordinary solidarity and purpose, and as a
result, Wednesday night's second leg in [.
Well, not quite in full, because there's little point in retyping the first weekend all over again.
But step right this way for a full list of who will be playing who on which weekend during the
Primera A Apertura.
The video of all the goals from the ninth round of the 2007 Torneo Apertura is online now, and can
be found here thanks to TN. As usual, read on for the full running order of that video, and my
personal favourite strikes from the weekend (dominated this week by Señores Denis and Belluschi),
courtesy [...]
All 29 of the goals from the sixteenth round of the Apertura can be seen right now thanks to TN by
clicking here. Read on as ever for the running order of this video for those who don't know which
kit is whose, as well as my personal favourite strikes of the week - including not [...]
The penultimate round of the championship begins with a relegation clash on Friday night when
Central host San Martín, and ends on Sunday with Vélez's visit to Independiente. By the time that
match kicks off, Argentina could have a new champion football team. Tigre's visit to Argentinos
and Lanús's visit to La Bombonera will be played [.
Once again, there was no River Plate this weekend, their home match with Newell's having been
postponed until further notice following the death of Gonzalo Acro last week. There were nine other
matches, though, and unlike last week they all saw goals, with a rather nice total of 24 all in.
Not an awful lot went on in El Viaducto on Thursday night, as Arsenal hosted River in the first leg
of the Copa Sudamericana semi-final. Both sides lacked something, and although the hosts showed
more intent, with River happy to play on the counter, they ended the game happy enough with the
draw after Fernando [...]
This post was supposed to go up in the early hours of this morning, but when your modem stops
talking to your computer at 2am, there's not an awful lot you can do, so now with about three hours
to go before the second leg of the all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana semi-final, here are the
starting elevens. [...]
Twelve short months ago, all was looking rosy in Argentina and South American competition for those
who like to see big clubs winning things. There was enough interest for the unexpected sides to
shake it up a bit – Pachuca were about to beat Colo Colo in the Copa Sudamericana final to become
the first [...]
After a two-week hiatus, Primera A football is back this weekend, with the title race entering its
endgame. Gimnasia will go into it a little disorientated, after manager Julio Falcioni announced he
won't be continuing in the post after the 2nd December, when the Apertura finishes. The big game is
the Avellaneda derby on Saturday, [.
The first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final is almost upon us. Arsenal de Sarandí have been in
Mexico for a few days now, where on Friday night they'll take on Club América in the first leg.
Their mission: to get a decent enough result that they'll have a chance in the second leg of [...]
For those who missed them last night, or want to enjoy them again, the goals from Arsenal's
astonishing away victory in the Azteca over Club América for the first leg of the Copa
Sudamericana final are now online, and thanks to our friends at GolesTV, you can see them right
here - just read on.
Another championship is over, and as the players (except Boca's) head off on their summer holidays,
it's time to reflect again on yet another thrilling short tournament. Unexpected champions was the
least of it - we've seen an avalanche of goals, players pushing themselves into the limelight and
yet more booing from the stands of the Monumental [.
And so, here it is. The wait is over. On Friday, the shouting stops and the 2007 Torneo Apertura
finally gets underway. Can Boca avenge their two narrow misses last season? Can River end their
trophy drought? Will San Lorenzo defend the title? All will be revealed in the next 19 rounds of
matches. We already have one [...]
Two big games this weekend - one is set to kick off in B Nacional as this post goes online, as
joint leaders San Martín de Tucumán and Quilmes clash in Tucumán. In Primera A, meanwhile,
bottom placed Central host Vélez, Lanús will be looking to crank up the pressure on Independiente
- the granate host San [...]
The video of the weekend's goals in the Primera A is online now, and you can see all 21 of them
thanks to TN simply by clicking here. As ever, read on for the running order to this video, and,
for those too lazy to sit through all of it, my personal favourite goals of [...]
There will be few changes to the usual weekly goal update for the new campaign. These are enforced
by the fact that TyCSports have now embedded their video in the homepage, minus the full screen
option, so I can't give you a direct link to the video file any more. So instead, we'll be linking
to [...]
The fourth round of the Torneo Apertura is upon us, as well as a fresh lot of fixtures in the lower
leagues. The main highlight of this weekend in the clash of last season's two champions: Apertura
winners Estudiantes host Clausura champions San Lorenzo. In B Nacional, meanwhile, the Córdoba
derby sees Instituto take on [...]
Yet again, River were pathetic away from home, albeit that Daniel Passarella sent out a virtual
reserve team to keep the main players safe for Sunday's superclásico. Independiente beat Olimpo
easily and Boca responded on Wednesday by winning the clásico against San Lorenzo, whilst there
was a last minute winner to a five goal thriller [...]
Things weren't expected to be like this in Victoria. When Tigre won promotion via the playoff
against Nueva Chicago last season, their triumph turned to tragedy when riots resulted in the
death of one of their fans. But on Friday night, they beat Arsenal de Sarandí 2-0, with goals from
man-of-the-match playmaker Martín Morel (pictured) and Sebastián Rusculleda, [.
Frustration for River but elation for Arsenal. Los Millonarios have put themselves in a good
position to progress to the semis, but it could have been even better. Arsenal, meanwhile,
celebrated an historic result in Guadalajara.
Twenty-one goals from this weekend's ten matches, and none of them came in Avellaneda, where Racing
and Independiente stank the place out in the Apertura's final clásico. Sunday was a helter-skelter
ride, with Boca slipping up but Lanús failing to take full advantage last thing in the evening -
the failure of both to pick [.
The fixtures for the opening weekend of the 2007 Apertura have been announced. For some reason,
they're not yet on the AFA's website, but they have made it onto those of the main news outlets.
The full fixtures for the campaign will be released soon, but for the first weekend ties, step this
way...
Boca's pre-season didn't continue as smoothly as they'd surely expected on Sunday, as they lost 3-1
to Mexican side Cruz Azul in the final of the friendly Copa Panamericana, in Phoenix, Arizona.
Having taken the lead through Mauro Boselli, they were clawed back by a fantastic free kick from
Israel López right at the end [...]
This Friday sees the start of the 2007 Primera A Torneo Apertura, with that long football-less
week-and-five-days since the World Youth Cup win finally over. But who are the teams? Where are
they from? Who manages them, what are their histories like and which are the main derby rivalries?
The superclásico's an easy one, of [...]
The goal videos for the second round of Apertura matches are online now, and as ever you can watch
them with a little help from HEGS. To view TN's video of all 24 of the weekend's goals, click on
this link, and for the running order of the clip, as well as my favourites of [...]
On Tuesday night Arsenal and San Lorenzo got their Copa Sudamericana campaigns up and running with
the first leg of the second Argentine qualifier, in a match marked by dramatic changes on and off
the pitch. Off it, the big story was the temperature, which dropped from 27ºC to 15ºC in three
hours, whilst on it, [...]
The third round of fixtures in the Primera A Apertura, and the second round of Primera B Nacional
fixtures, will be played this weekend, and can be seen (along with the other AFA-affiliated
divisions) here. The most notable fixture of the weekend is the season's first clash of two 'Big
Five' sides, when River travel [...]
The 17 goals from the third round of matches in the 2007 Primera A Tornero Apertura are online
now, and can be viewed on TN's website by clicking here. As ever, Gonzalo over at the wonderful
GolesTV has uploaded each goal individually, and if you read on, you'll find the full running order
for the TN [...]
It is, of course, only two days since week 4 ended, but the fifth round of matches in the Apertura
is taking place in mid-week. Team-news-wise, the biggest story right now is the future of Daniel
Passarella, who was rumoured to be on the verge of leaving River Plate following their away loss to
San [...]
The eighth round of the Torneo Apertura is to be played in midweek, on Tuesday and Wednesday of
this week. Central host fellow strugglers Gimnasia de Jujuy, leaders Independiente are at home to
Huracán - who were unbeaten two matches ago but have now lost twice on the trot - and
second-placed Boca host second-bottom [...]
Since I was unable to put up separate stories for them today, what follows is a bit of a bumper
post combining the usual Primera A scores and scorers rundown with the goal videos. There were 28
strikes in all, the most newsworthy coming in El Sur on Saturday and El Coloso del Parque on [...]
My holiday has resulted in not having the chance to post the fixture list for the midweek matches
any sooner than tonight, and as I type the second match of the round is already in progress. Colón
have already beaten Olimpo easily in Santa Fé, San Lorenzo visit Boca tomorrow in the round's
clásico, and [...]
The sixteenth round of matches saw both Copa Sudamericana finalists lose out due to rotation,
River's lingering hopes of a title finally extinguished thanks - once again - to their pathetic
away form and Arsenal getting spanked by Argentinos in the weekend's last match. Independiente let
a lead slide at home to Estudiantes and are [...]
Somehow, Mario Cuenca kept River Plate from putting any goals past Arsenal in the Monumental in a
match which the hosts had far the better of. Arsenal started more sharply and very nearly took the
lead almost before the match had begun, but were denied by Juan Pablo Carrizo and thereafter, River
dominated, particularly as [...]
The final weekend of the 2007 Torneo Apertura is upon us in Primera A, and whilst the
championship's already been decided after two matches last Wednesday, there are some juicy ties to
send us off. Central, fresh from last week's win, host Argentinos, who are gunning for their
best-ever short tournament finish.
