Real Madrid is no longer in the hunt for Royston Drenthe from Feyenoord due to Chelsea's
involvement which priced Drenthe's footballing services into the 17.5 Mill. Euro range instead of
the 12.5 Mill. Euros Madrid and Feyenoord had originally agreed on. This is definitely good news
for Brasilian Marcelo who is currently the only true left back at Madrid's disposal.
After much speculation from the pundits (myself included) that Real Madrid would sign Arjen Robben,
the club took a sidestep in their pursuit of some Dutch flair. On Monday, the club unveiled Dutch
duo Wesley Sneijder and Royston Drenthe as their latest signings. Drenthe was acquired from
Feyenoord for a reported fee of 14 million euros, while the 23-year-old midfield maestro Sneijder
arrives from Ajax after Real agreed to pay 27 million euros.
La Liga kicks off this weekend and I am going to highlight three games. We start things off with a
bang as the Madrid derby sees Real host Atlético. It has been revealed that new signings Arjen
Robben and Gabriel Heinze will not make their Real Madrid debuts despite my feeling that at least
Heinze would start. However, goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been included after injury, while six
other summer signings have also been named to the squad - Christoph Metzelder, Pepe, Javier
Saviola, Jerzy Dudek, Royston Drenthe and Wesley Sneijder.
ROBINHO SCORED & CONTINUALLY THREATENED MURCIA
The game started at a frenetic pace as the NYC Madridistas witnessed a tremendous goal which began
with a Gago pass into the right corner of the penalty box to Guti who one touches a wondrous cross
to Robinho who calmly heads in the games first goal(9" min.
Not content with the signings they've already made, Real Madrid have splashed out on two more
big-name signings, while shipping two players off to Serie A clubs. Madrid reached an agreement for
the transfer of Cicero Joao de Cezare (referred to as "Cicinho") to AS Roma and have moved Emerson
to defending Serie A champs Inter Milan. Emerson joined Real Madrid from Juventus for an estimated
fee of 16 million euros (approx.
Arjen Robben took to the training ground today for the first time with his Real Madrid teammates.
Robben, who came over to Madrid for 36 Million Euro in the offseason, has had a knee injury that
has kept him out of the lineup thus far. Madrid had a 2.5 hour training session today [...]
Finally there seems to be an end approaching to the pre-season transfer madness at REAL MADRID.
With the official presentations of Royston Drenthe and Wesley Sneijder only Arjen Robben remains as
the last realistic transfer target for MADRID before the Spanish LA LIGA season starts. It's been
difficult to get a handle on what to expect from the reigning LA LIGA champions because throughout
the pre-season you always got the sense that this team, aside from being in transition after
changing coaches from a defensive guru to an attacking knights templar, is still, in the words of
Capello himself in a recent interview, "under construction".
Much will be made(and rightly so) of how Baptista created an outstanding overhead bicycle kick
goal(85' min.) from an errant Guti pass and a crafty back headed ball from the mighty and
unheralded Mamadiou Diarra. Baptista's goal sealed Real Madrid's 2-0 victory against a pesky Real
Betis side that just wouldn't go away.
