The full fixtures for the Primera División A Torneo Clausura 2009 were released by the
AFA a little while ago, and now I've got a weekend when (relatively) little is happening to
write about on HEGS, here's the full fixture list for the season. Primera División A Torneo
Clausura 2009: Round 1 (8th Feb) Club Atlético Huracán vs [.
God knows why the AFA do this every bloody year. As usual, they've released the full fixture list
the day after the first weekend's fixtures were announced. What possible good comes of this is for
Julio Grondona to explain (not that anyone really cares enough to ask him), other than to guarantee
two straight days [.
For some reason, the fifth round of the Torneo Clausura begins on a Thursday, so here, 24 hours
earlier than normal, is the weekend's fixture list. Sunday's clásico sees Independiente host
Boca Juniors, whilst San Martín play a crucial relegation clash on Thursday in Mendoza. Racing
will be hoping Tigre don't get their claws back [.
On the 20th of this month, a national side consisting solely of players from the domestic league
(which HEGS shall henceforth refer to as 'Argentina B') will take on Panama in Santa Fe. Diego
Maradona announced the squad (including six Boca Juniors or Estudiantes players who won't be
involved unless their club have been eliminated from the Copa Libertadores [.
'Where's my week gone?!' I can hear you inwardly asking. Don't worry you've not been in a coma
since Monday. Due to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers (notably that between Argentina and Brazil
in Rosario on Saturday) the AFA have moved the third round of the Torneo Apertura to midweek.
Rosario Central vs River [.
Of course, 1985 will always be known more for the Heysel Stadium disaster, in which 39 fans lost
their lives and hundreds more were injured shortly before the final of the European Cup, than for
the final itself. In the wake of that tragedy, European powerhouses Liverpool and Juventus played a
controversial match in which the only score was a Michael Platini penalty kick that gave Juventus a
1-0 victory and the championship.
As expected, Maradona and his advisers decided to select a "local" national team consisting of the
most talented domestic players. This will enable Maradona to train once week and prepare for the
upcoming world qualifiers against Ecuador & Colombia. This shift in strategy proves how serious
Maradona and AFA officials are on qualifying for South Africa next summer.
On Tuesday the AFA announced the first weekend's fixtures for the 2009 Torneo Apertura in the
Primera División, and their website promptly decided to stop working (for me at least, but I've
had some internet issues tonight so maybe it's the only site that's still not loading on my PC).
The remaining fixtures haven't yet [.

The final weekend of the 2009 Torneo Clausura is upon us at last, and it's going to be a dramatic
one. Racing and Newell's celebrate having nothing to play for to kick things off on Friday night,
whilst Saturday sees Central take on Godoy Cruz in a match that could be vital to next season's
[...]
Ah, it's been a while. Defending champions Boca begin at altitude in Jujuy on Sunday evening, a
situation Diego Maradona isn't happy about (the time, rather than the location); two of the
Apertura finalists give us the first match of the season as San Lorenzo visit Tigre, and
Independiente play their first 'home' match at [.
The second round of Apertura fixtures is upon us already. Apologies that this post didn't go out as
usual at midday GMT, but my internet providers have been having server issues and although I
thought I was online when I pressed the button to schedule this post last night, I'd evidently lost
my connection.
The goals from the seventh round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura are online now, and you can view all
21 of them on the TN Sportblog by clicking here. Read on for the running order of this video, and a
link to the goals from the lower divisions this weekend if you want to see [...]
Vélez Sársfield visit Gimnasia La Plata on Saturday hoping to extend their lead at the top of the
Primera División table, with second-placed Lanús set to host Rosario Central the night before, in
Friday's second match. Even when they're seventh in the table, every Racing match is a relegation
decider, but if they beat San [.
Leaders Lanús host Diego Simeone's San Lorenzo in a clash of ideologies on Saturday.
Independiente's slimmed-down squad take on Rosario Central in a match that could be key to the
relegation fight, especially if El Rojo decide to lie down in order to make things tighter for
rivals Racing (mind you, how will we tell [.
Back to the league after the thrills and spills of the international break. Three matches remain,
and this weekend the endgame gets going with two clásicos on Sunday one in La Bombonera, where San
Lorenzo will be the 'home' side, and one in Avellaneda between Racing and Boca. The clash between
River and Tigre [.
The goals from the eighteenth round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura are online now, from San Lorenzo's
win over Independiente to San Martín's victory in Rosario and the results for Vélez and Huracán
which take the title race to the last day. Click here to watch them and read on for the running
order. Running order [.
For those who aren't already aware, the 2011 Copa América will be played in Argentina, and on
Tuesday AFA President Julio Grondona met with Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner
to start thrashing out the details. It's been agreed that the main venue for the tournament will be
La Plata's Estadio Municipal (currently home to [.
After the finalísima comes the rather more mundane business of recording the scores from the final
round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura. Vélez took the title and Gimnasia de Jujuy and San Martín de
Tucumán both go down, as we already know, but elsewhere there were wins for Boca and San Lorenzo,
one last humiliation [.
The second round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura takes in at least two channels (América will
broadcast four matches exclusively, with the rest on Canal 7 and possibly Canal 9) and an early
clash between two teams who could potentially be propping up the table come December River Plate
host Chacarita Juniors.
Tuesday night saw a home win at the Gigante del Arroyito, not that it'll be much consolation for
the majority of supporters of the selección. River Plate played ineptly and when Diego Buonanotte
gave the ball away in midfield, Rosario Central were able to break and score their second goal in
an eventual 2-1 win.
repechaje.
Another week of former Wizards updates. The USL playoffs are inn full swing right now. Still
looking for a few former Wizards still, and since Carlos Marinelli hasn't even appeared for
Argentinos Juniors at all, I'm doubting he actually signed for them, so he joins the list of former
Wizards I'm searching for, along with Alex Zotinca, Doug DeMartin, Jose Burciaga, Neal Kitson,
Scott Sealy, and Will John.
Martín Palermo scored an amazing 45-yard header to win a five-goal bonanza in La Bombonera as Boca
Juniors became the first team this season to beat Vélez Sársfield. It's got the more excitable
elements of the Argentine press (which is to say, the Argentine press) insisting that he should
start for the selección.
Maradona attended the Argentinos Juniors-Racing game to view Argentinos forward Gabriel
Hauche who's call up has been rumored.
Maradona said that the call up is possible. Maradona also talked about the WC qualifying
campaign and about Messi's poor form with the national team.
Early on Sunday morning, violence once again reared its head in the world of Argentine football,
when Fernando Cáceres Independiente's reserve team coach and a former Argentina international was
shot by robbers, taking a bullet in his right eye. At the time of writing, he continues in the
Carrillo Hospital in Ciudadela [.
The thirteenth round of the Torneo Apertura sees the first weekend round to hang over to Monday
night (not counting the twelfth round which lasted through til Tuesday due to the previous round
only having finished on the Thursday before). Joint leaders Newell's and Banfield are at home River
and away to San Lorenzo respectively, [.
At long last, after a summer of transfer bore-stories and ridiculous friendly matches which are
only 70 or 80 minutes long, real league football returns to the Argentine Republic on Friday night.
Following the most closely-fought championship in short tournament history, the defending champions
are a familiar name, but that's no reason to assume it'll [.
What a crazy weekend. It's almost enough to make me wish I'd delayed my flight out to Mexico for
long enough to have taken it all in myself. I get online at my hotel this evening to find that all
four of the sides who finished in the top four places in the Apertura have [...]
The goals from the sixth round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura are online now, and you can view all 29
of them (ten alone came from Friday evening's two matches), including brilliant ones in, among
others, Lanús, Liniers and Rosario on the TN Sportblog by clicking here. If you don't know
which teams wear which [.
Our Argentine readers will no doubt want to put the midweek international to the backs of their
minds as quickly as possible, and the AFA are obliging them by getting league action back underway
post haste. Friday night sees second-placed Colón visit fifth-placed Huracán, whilst Vélez vs
Banfield on Saturday should be a good one.
The goals from the tenth round of the Torneo Clausura 2009 are online now - watch them here on the
TN Sportblog. Read on, as usual, for the running order of this video, as well as a link to TN's
highlights of yesterday afternoon's superclásico in La Bombonera. Running order for TN Show de
Goles: Vélez (white shirts [.
The eleventh round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura pitches two of the title contenders against each
other in Santa Fe - the winner of Colón vs Vélez will finish the weekend on top of the table
(unless it's Colón and Lanús do something unspeakable to Godoy Cruz in Mendoza). Argentinos boss
Claudio Vivas is playing [.
River Plate didn't have an easy welcome home from their fans following the midweek elimination from
the Copa Libertadores, but just about got past Gimnasia de Jujuy anyway, thanks to Marcelo
Gallardo's assist - with his first touch after being brought on at half time - for Radamel Falcao
García. Elsewhere on Sunday Central saw [.
There are no Friday night games this weekend, sadly, but since the fixtures go up on HEGS at the
same time every week, here they are per usual for you to plan your weekend around. There's a
half-derby in El Cilindro and a match in Tucumán which will prove important at both ends of the
[...]
Vélez will have the chance to move four points clear in the race for the title on Sunday after
the other two main contenders, Lanús and Colón, both lost on Saturday. Elsewere it would seem
Tolo Gallego's found Independiente's best side, and there was a first win in five matches for San
Lorenzo, courtesy of a striker their new boss Diego [.
The first (and more important) of the weekend's two clásicos was Saturday's first match, and it
saw Lanús extend their lead at the top of the table, thus ensuring they'll finish the weekend top
of the table. Elsewhere, Newell's won at the Nuevo Gasómetro in a clash of two sides scrambling
for Copa Sudamericana qualification, [.
Sunday's matches saw Racing edge a little further clear of Rosario Central in the promedio thanks
to a draw against title-chasing Colón, a few hours after River Plate and Independiente had served
up a veritable feast of complete and total bloody incompetence with a second half that saw three
three!
Argentinos Juniors' 3-2 loss away to Estudiantes on Saturday saw manager Claudio Vivas resign his
charge, and there was no waiting around to see who would replace him on Monday Claudio Borghi,
former Argentinos playing favourite, was unveiled. Argentinos become Borghi's second Argentine club
as a manager after his spell last year with Independiente.
