Argentina host Colombia tonight at 6pm Argentine time (10pm British Summer Time) on the kind of
pitch that even Wembley Stadium Ltd. would be embarrassed to see England play on. After Argentine
rock band Los Piojos played in El Monumental last Saturday, the AFA have wait for it painted bits
of the pitch [.
Don't worry Racing fans, that's not Ricardo Caruso Lombardi in the headline. Godoy Cruz striker
Leandro Caruso is off to Italy, where he'll play next season for Udinese after passing a medical.
At Huracán, president Carlos Babington wants to keep Javier Pastore at least until the end of the
year, so has signed an agreement [.
The French city of Toulon is hosting a friendly Under 21 international tournament this month which
Sergio Batista's boys have travelled to, and on Wednesday they played their first match against the
Netherlands, and demonstrated after the embarrassment of the Under 20s' failure to qualify to
defend their crown at the the Egypt 2009 World [.
Tuesday saw Diego Maradona name his second Argentina squad, in preparation for the friendly against
France in Marseilles on the 11th of February. For the first time Lionel Messi was called up by
El Diego - as was my mate Carlos Tevez - who, clearly motivated by my words of encouragement
on Saturday night, scored for Manchester [.
Diego Maradona has announced the squad for Argentina's next competitive matches, the World Cup 2010
qualifiers at home to Colombia on the 6th of June, and away to Ecuador on the 10th. The purpose of
that 'B' international on Wednesday night has been revealed no fewer than nine players from the
domestic game have [.
In amongst the flurry of goals served up for us by Gimnasia de Jujuy and Rosario Central on Friday
night, the fact got obscured (on HEGS at least - sorry) that Diego Maradona had named his first
competitive squad as Argentina manager, in preparation for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers at
home to Venezuela and [.
The latest double-header of qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is upon us
this weekend, so with my head now sufficiently back on track after two weeks back home, it seems as
good a time as any to have a look at what our boys abroad have been doing this weekend. [...]
Diego Maradona announced the home-based players for the France friendly on Monday (surprise
surprise, Boca Juniors won't be inconvenienced by any call-ups...), after another fun-packed
weekend for the foreign legion, during which Nico Burdisso rescued a record for his manager in
Italy, Lucas Lobos got his first goal of the season in Mexico, Lucho González [.
Boca Juniors' squad took off for Europe on Sunday in readiness to take part in the Audi Cup in
Munich (their first match is on Wednesday against Manchester United), but over the weekend there
have already been some Argentine clubs and players in pre-season action. River Plate beat Everton
thanks to a great Ariel Ortega [.
It's been a quiet-ish week for the main Argentine contingent in Europe, but there have been one or
two scorers. In Mexico, meanwhile, the new year's championship is already underway, and there were
five goals from Argentines as well as a couple of other decent contributions there. Step this
way... In Italy, Serie A leaders Internazionale [.
On a terrible pitch, Argentina played poorly on Saturday but took three points all the same from a
Colombian side who pressured them all the way and made them work hard for the points. Getafe
defender Daniel 'Cata' Díaz made the breakthrough in the eleventh minute of the second half. It
wasn't a pretty performance, [.
Diego Maradona has announced a list of just eighteen Europe-based players for Argentina's final two
World Cup qualifying matches at home to Peru and away to Uruguay. There are numerous big-name
casualties of Diego's refusal to consider that any part of the defeats to Brazil and Paraguay might
have been his fault.
In England, there was a clash to bring back memories of when the superclásico was high profile
enough to form a Copa Libertadores semi-final, rather than being played between two teams who
probably won't even qualify for the tournament, as Javier Mascherano's Liverpool took on Carlos
Tevez's Manchester City.
Boca Juniors' goalkeeping crisis should shortly be put to bed after it was confirmed on Thursday
that they've agreed a fee with Spanish side Getafe to buy Roberto Abbondanzieri back. The Xeneize
will pay €300,000 to the Madrid club for their former custodian. Abbondanzieri, for his part,
had already pleaded with both sides to strike a [.
Two Independiente players may be in line for moves to foreign climes soon. One of them you've
probably heard of (if you follow the Argentine league, anyway), the other... well, if you've heard
of the other you need to get out more. Lucas Pusineri, 32-year-old midfield stalwart, might have an
offer from Major League Soccer, [.
The European league seasons are now all over, as is the Mexican championship, but Argentines have
once again had a say, with European places still up for grabs, another title claimed in France and
one of Maradona's new boys very nearly turning the tide of the Mexican playoff final. With the
trophies wrapped up in [.
Juan Sebastián Verón was named on the 1st January as the 2008 South American Footballer
Of The Year by Uruguayan newspaper El País, in a bit of a surprise for many critics because in
spite of not winning any titles during 2008, he beat of competition from the likes of Juan
Román Riquelme and other [.
This will be a very quick roundup, because January always makes me a little lazy with the amount of
stuff I want to write, due to the lack of meaningful domestic league action. Still, there were some
performances from our boys abroad in the last week, and one perhaps notable absence. That absence
was Carlos Tevez, [.
An anniversary was marked in fitting fashion by one of our foreign contingent in the weekend just
gone, whilst another won a league title and two claimed a Brazilian state trophy - to find out
which ones, you'll have to read on. The winners in Brazil were Andrés D'Alessandro and Pablo
Guiñazú, who helped Internacional do [.
With league titles on the verge of being decided across Europe, there were some important
contributions made by Argentines this weekend, and at least one other could come on Tuesday when
Lionel Messi's Barcelona take on Chelsea in the European Cup semi-final first leg. To see who did
what over the weekend just gone, though, [.
...Plus the European Cup semi-final second legs. That's an easy one to get out the way quickly:
Carlos Tevez didn't feature as Manchester United booked their place in the final, whilst Lionel
Messi had a quiet game for Barcelona but set up a last-gasp equaliser for Andrés Iniesta to put
Barcelona through on away goals [.
HEGS Award voting season (nominations to the address in that post please) got underway with another
championship for a team with Argentine representation this weekend, as Porto claimed their fourth
consecutive Portuguese crown. Elsewhere Martín Demichelis celebrated the birth of his child with a
rare goal in Germany, and Hernán Crespo started for Internazionale!
Maxi López plays a little later tonight in the Copa Libertadores as his Grêmio side take on
Caracas FC in the first leg of the quarter-final. There have been two very prominent performances
on the other side of the Atlantic tonight though, as the two previous winners Lionel Messi and
Carlos Tevez looked [.
On Wednesday Argentina play Russia in Moscow in an international friendly, with Diego Maradona's
charges looking to gain some sort of momentum to take into their World Cup qualifier at home to
Brazil in Rosario next month. Argentine sports daily Olé claim that Andrei Arshavin is viewed as a
'hope for the future' in Russia, [.
Friday saw the announcement of Diego Maradona's national team squad to face Brazil in Rosario on
the 5th September, which will then take on Paraguay days later in Asunción. Matches between
Argentina and Brazil are always intense affairs, but with so much riding on this game for
Maradona's men in particular, el pibe de oro [.
The chaotic 3-1 defeat to Brazil on Saturday night wasn't the only action for Argentine players
over the weekend. There was a full programme of matches in Mexico's Primera División, and plenty
of Argentines had starring roles. In a little taster as a first proper Argentines Abroad of the
season, Tom Clark gave me a [.
As the selección converge on Ezeiza from all corners of the world (well, western Europe) for the
final, must-not-balls-up-this-time double-header of World Cup qualifiers against Peru (Saturday in
El Monumental) and Uruguay (a week on Wednesday in Montevideo's Estadio Centenario), it's
heartening that some of them have had more auspicious weekends than Carlos Tevez, who [.
This is probably the shortest Argentines Abroad update you're ever likely to read, but after
leaving it for such a long time before last week I'm eager not to break the habit. Also, with so
few leagues playing during the recent international break, Our Man In Mexico, Tom Clark, has
effectively written it for me [.
It was a mixed week for Argentines in England Pablo Zabaleta was sent off and Carlos Tevez had to
toil on his own up front as Manchester City could only draw 1-1 with Wigan Athletic, and Javier
Mascherano and Emiliano Insúa's Liverpool lost in circumstances which were either hilarious or
exasperating depending on your [.
On Saturday one group of Argentines abroad got off to a very good start in a new campaign José
Luis Brown's national Under 17 team beat Honduras 1-0 in the first match of their age group World
Cup in Nigeria. Sergio Araujo scored the only goal of the game. Around the world in the [...]
It's so dull watching Lionel Messi, isn't it? It would be so much more interesting if he was poor
now and then, but it just never seems to happen. On Tuesday he was at it again, scoring a hat-trick
away to Maxi Rodríguez's and Ever Banega's Atlético de Madrid (Sergio Agüero didn't
play) as Barcelona [.
Fabio Capello isn't the only international manager calling up a goalkeeper who can barely get a
start for his club side for the next round of World Cup qualifiers. Diego Maradona has not only
included Juan Pablo Carrizo in Argentina's squad, but will make him his first choice stopper on
Saturday at home to Venezeula.
Diego Maradona's side have arrived in Bolivia for Wednesday's World Cup qualifier in La Paz and,
although the boss is keeping his cards close to his chest, it looks like there'll be one or two
changes, the most notable of which are Lucho González replacing Newcastle's Jonás Gutiérrez, and
Sergio Agüero starting on the bench.
The majority of the players who so failed to distinguish themselves last Wednesday were rested by
their clubs on their return from what Sir Alex Ferguson, Carlos Tevez's boss at Manchester United,
called 'Mars' this weekend. A few Argentines were in action, though, so here as ever is the rundown
- a rather briefer one than normal.
It's not too often I write one of these covering midweek matches, but Wednesday 13th May was a bit
of a high watermark for Argentine representatives in foreign football this season. The Copa
Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions League, as well as the national cup finals in both Spain and
Italy, all had important contributions from [.
After last week's midweek cup finals in Spain and Italy, the gongs are starting to be handed out
for the competitions people actually care about now, and already we've got three more league
champion sides in Europe with Argentine representation to add to AZ in the Netherlands and Porto in
Portugal. The Spanish, Italian and [.
The final full-length Argentines Abroad of 2008-2009 comes with just a day and a half left for you
to get your nominations in for the HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste award for the Best Argentine Abroad of
the season that's now finishing. So far we've had relatively few nominations in, so if you'd like
your favourite [.
The nominations have been counted for the 2008-2009 HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste Award for Best
Argentine Abroad, and they're an interesting bunch. Four players were nominated, and last year's
winner Carlos Tevez isn't among them. The top flights of Italy, Spain, Mexico and England have
provided us with the nominees, of whom three haven't previously [.
Radamel Falcao García and Juan Marcelo Ojeda both seem to be on their way out of El Monumental at
the end of the Torneo Clausura, after the Colombian striker said that he 'understands' that he's on
his way, and interest in the young goalkeeper from Mexican club Atlas continues in spite of
complications in his [.
If you've not already voted for our Argentines Abroad award, now's the time. Less than 24 hours
remaining! Argentina has recently had its own elections, but this week sees the culmination of a
far more important one. You've got only six days left to vote, if you haven't already, for your
winner in the HEGS / [.
