Lionel Messi had the weekend off, putting in a relatively quiet shift, but Gonzalo Higuaín scored
again as Real Madrid kept up the pace in La Liga. Elsewhere two Argentines got their hands on the
French League Cup, Martín Demichelis donned a face mask to return to action for Bayern München
(he'll be using it [.
Sergio Batista named his first squad as Argentina manager yesterday, as well as being officially
unveiled by Julio Grondona as the new permanent manager of the national side. Lucas Biglia was the
only new name on the teamsheet, whilst in ... Continue reading →
Diego Maradona will present his longlist of 30 Argentine players to the AFA at Ezeiza in a few

When the Argentine national team flew to South Africa a week ago today, twenty-two barra bravas
from Chacarita Juniors and Boca Juniors were on the same flight, in the economy section. The AFA
denied any knowledge of this, but one ... Continue reading →
It's yet to be officially announced, but the Argentina starting eleven for the first match of their

injuries. Jonás Gutiérrez is in at right ... Continue reading →

First, for all those who are as big on detail as myself, I apologise for that headline, because
there's nothing I hate more than English speakers referring to the world's most modest, understated
football club as 'Real'. But why let that get in the way of a not especially good headline? Real
Madrid might be [.
In a few short hours, Argentina take on Germany in one the highest-profile international friendlies
of the week, in Munich. With Diego Maradona claiming he already knows the vast majority of the
squad he's taking to South Africa, the match is likely to give us some clue as to his thinking, if
indeed that isn't [.
I'm a little distracted with various things at present, not least the preparations for my move next
week to Buenos Aires. As such there's no Argentines Abroad this week, other than a congratulations
to Lionel Messi for that astonishing four-goal haul in tonight's European Cup match between
Barcelona and Arsenal, which makes him Barça's all-time [.
Having sat inside all bloody afternoon waiting for an announcement that was supposed to come at 3pm
and eventually arrived just after 7, this will only be a brief post, but all the same I thought I'd
put up a ... Continue reading →
There were numerous lists before Maradona's preliminary squad of 30 was announced yesterday
speculating on who might be included, and outlining who the author would include if they were the
manager. Well, I thought I'd try something a little different. ... Continue reading →
Hearts were in mouths this afternoon in Ezeiza when Lionel Messi hit the ground in training after a
collision with Javier Mascherano which saw Argentina's medical staff running over to help him. He
is, apparently, absolutely fine though. And whilst ... Continue reading →
In ten minutes, Argentina vs Canada will kick off in the Estadio Monumental, and Diego Maradona's

insisted would be his starting lineup for the ... Continue reading →
If simply knowing which players are in the squad isn't enough, Argentina-watchers can rejoice
today: the full list of which players will use which shirt numbers during the 2010 World Cup has
been released. Lionel Messi takes the number 10, ... Continue reading →
Diego Maradona's selección trained with an audience for the first time since arriving in South
Africa on Thursday, inviting the press to watch. They opened more than just the gates to the
complex though, with several players commenting on the ... Continue reading →
As the selección engaged in a game of attack vs defence which supposedly revealed Diego Maradona's
first-choice eleven for Saturday's World Cup debut against Nigeria, funny goings-on were underway
on Tuesday morning back in Buenos Aires. The barra bravas deported ... Continue reading →
The octopus predicting Argentina's downfall was right. On Saturday, Diego Maradona's team crashed
out of the 2010 World Cup, thrashed 4-0 by an excellent Germany side meeting their own first real
challenge of the knockout stages. A lack of creativity ... Continue reading →
One Argentine at least is in the running to win something at the South Africa 2010 World Cup.
FIFA's ten-man shortlist for the Golden Ball, awarded to the tournament's best player, has been
announced, and although he didn't score the ... Continue reading →
Just under an hour ago, Diego Maradona walked into a packed press room to give a prepared speech to
Argentina's press on his thoughts after refusing to sign the contract extension the AFA offered him
yesterday. He fired some shots ... Continue reading →
After more ins and outs, ups and downs and all round tedious moaning than a particularly tawdry
adult film, Juan Román Riquelme has finally signed his new four-year contract with Boca Juniors.
Putting pen to paper earlier today, the Boca ... Continue reading →
Argentina take on Spain in just possibly the football world's most prestigious fixture of the day

Argentina's starting XI against Japan for the friendly in Tokyo on Friday has been confirmed, and

Argentina lost to Japan for the first time in their history on Friday, thanks to an 18th-minute
goal from Shinji Okazaki. Only Lionel Messi and Javier Mascherano really did themselves any sort of
credit, and a side clearly as worn ... Continue reading →
After a mind-numbingly drawn out ceremony, the groups for the 2011 Copa América, to be held in
Argentina from the 1st July (the new date having been decided on earlier today), have been decided.

The first proper Argentines Abroad of the new year sees a narrow spread of criollo achievement, but
an impressive one nonetheless. Lionel Messi started the defence of his numerous player of the year
awards with a hat trick. His next goal for Barcelona will be the hundredth of his club career. In
England, Manchester City [.
If you're an eagle-eyed regular reader of HEGS, you may recall at some point during the last week a
comment being made about dodgy Argentine NGOs trying to help secure funding for certain barra brava
gangs to travel to the World Cup in South Africa to support the national side in June. Now, if you
[.
A quick news update this one: It was confirmed on Thursday that the Argentine national team will
play two friendlies in Buenos Aires prior to leaving for the World Cup. The original plan was to
play the matches in Europe (fans there have more money, you see), but the players apparently
requested that they play [.
For a change, Carlos Tevez had a quiet match in the Premier League, with Manchester City losing to
Everton (Pablo Zabaleta wasn't much better). Elsewhere though, Argentines were in form again.
Lionel Messi became the youngest player ever to score 100 competitive goals for Barcelona and also
the youngest to score 101.
On Tuesday night a home-based Argentina squad took on Costa Rica's national team in a friendly
which saw Diego Maradona's return to footballing involvement following his two month touchline ban
(who noticed?). The match was won 3-2 by Argentina, with goals from José Sosa, Guillermo Burdisso
and Franco Jara for the hosts.
Before we begin, a quick feliz cumpleaños to Gabriel Batistuta, the all-time highest goalscorer in
the history of the Argentine national team, who turned forty on Monday. There was no Argentine
action from his old team Fiorentina on Sunday (they drew 2-2 away to Cagliari), but a move for his
heir in the selección; after [.
A late and short edition, this one, made so by a combination of my writing commitments elsewhere,
and the running of the last round of the domestic championship into Monday night. HEGS has earned a
bit of a day off in one respect this website is three years old today. The weekend just gone [...]
Wednesday night was a football-packed one, but I spent a fair bit of it finishing off a Copa
Libertadores preview piece for Soccernet so didn't have time to get the goal videos up right after
the games. Argentina's home-based squad played Jamaica in a friendly in Mar del Plata, and after
falling a goal behind [.
This weekend has seen Juan Pablo Carrizo damage his cause in the battle for the national #1 shirt;
Internazionale drew with Germán Denis' Napoli, and Gabriel Heinze was involved in a war of words
with Real Madrid's sporting director Jorge Valdano. Roberto Abbondanzieri looks set to move from
Boca Juniors to Internacional de Porto Alegre.
A very late Argentines Abroad this week, because I was in Manchester over the weekend and didn't
get home until Tuesday night. One advantage of this is that we saw a very mixed midweek lot of
action. In England it was a bad night for Argentines in the FA Cup Pablo Zabaleta and Julio [...]
Lionel Messi returned to goalscoring form for Barcelona, whilst Carlos Tevez simply returned for
Manchester City and scored as well. Gonzalo Higuaín got another two for Real Madrid, Lisandro
López won a match for Lyon and in Serie A, whilst Diego Milito scored his fifteenth of the season,
Catania only had seven Argentines in [.
Diego Maradona's last chance to give his players a proper test prior to the announcement of the
provisional squad for the World Cup took place on Wednesday night and saw a dull match marked only
by Gonzalo Higuaín's second goal in his third match for his country. Martín Demichelis, playing
at his home stadium in [.
A truncated Argentines Abroad this week, because I'm typing this up late as ever but even more
tired than usual. The weekend just gone deserves some mention, though. Lionel Messi hit a double
but couldn't win the match for Barcelona, Javier Saviola scored a fine goal for Benfica and Jonás
Gutiérrez finally got his mask [.
Two players dominate the non-existent honours in this week's Argentines Abroad. On Sunday both
Lionel Messi and the under-pressure Gonzalo Higuaín hit hat tricks to ensure that Spain's top two
continue to fight neck and neck at the top of La Liga. Messi's triplete against Valencia began with
a brilliant solo goal, whilst Higuaín's came [.
UK readers may remember that a month or so ago I was writing in When Saturday Comes about the
Argentine government's under-the-radar plans to try and finance a large group of barra bravas to
travel to the World Cup in South Africa come June. A couple of weeks ago there were some further
developments, and [.
