Not an awful lot has happened really. The selección landed in Bogotá on Sunday and Carlos Tevez
gave a press conference alongside Juan Román Riquelme on Monday, in which he stated, among other
things, that 'It will be a very difficult match, as it always is when Argentina visit Colombia in
the qualifiers...
Fourteen years ago, Colombia travelled to Buenos Aires to take on an Argentina who'd been in three
of the previous four World Cup finals (winning two) and were given no chance whatsoever of getting
a result. Inspired by Carlos Valerrama and with Faustino Asprilla hitting a hat-trick, they blew
the hosts away, 5-0. Tuesday night [...]
Surprising revelations in Colombia on Wednesday, as a close associate of the Cali drug cartel
revealed his organisation's apparent involvement in one of the most infamous football matches in
World Cup history - Argentina's 6-0 thrashing of Peru to reach the final of the 1978 event, which
they went on to win.
So, it turned out on Sunday that the 18 names Alfio Basile gave us a few weeks ago weren't in fact
the only ones to be included in Argentina's squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against
Chile (in the Monumental) and Ecuador (in Quito). I'd like to emphasise that there was no hint of
[...]
Apologies for the lateness of the posting, I've been without internet for most of the weekend. Juan
Román Riquelme inspired Argentina to a 3-0 brushing aside of Bolivia in the Monumental on Saturday
evening, netting twice himself in the second half after Sergio Agüero had opened the scoring
before the break.
Alfio Basile has named his squad for Argentina's opening two World Cup 2010 qualifiers, at home to
Chile and away to Venezuela on the 13th and 16th of October. Juan Román Riquelme, despite being
stuck in limbo after failing to find his way to another club before the European transfer window
closed, is included, and [...]
Alfio Basile has named the five domestic-based players who are called up to the Argentina squad for
the two upcoming World Cup Qualifiers at home to Bolivia on Saturday and away to Colombia three
days later. The final squad of 22 players will meet for training on Monday morning in Ezeiza, and
will consist of [...]
Dunga's Brazil starting XI against Argentina in tonight's Copa América final has been announced.
Having played some painfully ordinary football reminscient of their manager's playing career,
Brazil have managed to get to the final without exciting anyone in their homeland with anything
apart from the 6-1 quarter-final dismembering of Chile. In spite of being the [.
Argentina's dream of winning a first Under 17 World Cup will have to wait another two years, after
they fell to Nigeria by 2-0 on Saturday in Cheonan. Argentina started the stronger but Nigeria took
the lead through a penalty in the 33rd minute after Lukman Haruna was felled in the box by Fernando
Meza, [...]
The selección took most of the headlines this weekend, of course, but a few other things were
happening. Boca manager Miguel Russo talked of his 'optimism' going into the final rounds of the
Apertura, River Plate have lost one of their forwards to injury on international duty, and
Almirante Brown have announced their intentions to [...]
It was anything but the walk in the park suggested by the scoreline, but Argentina turned in
perhaps their most complete performance yet in the Copa América, riding their luck but staying
cool and taking their chances well to sail past Mexico and book a date with arch enemies Brazil for
a rematch of the [...]
There was apparently some bad blood in the Boca Juniors squad on their return to training after the
2-0 loss to River Plate in Sunday's superclásico. Manager Miguel Angel Russo and the rest of
Boca's squad are reportedly furious with Ever Banega for picking up the red card which left them
playing with ten men [...]
One let-down on a weekend of generally good displays by Argentines in Europe, this one. On
Saturday, Carlos Tevez didn't have the best of days for Manchester United, who went down 1-0 at the
Reebok Stadium to Bolton Wanderers. Tevez having only got off the plane back from Buenos Aires the
day before the match was rushed into [.
The selección will play a friendly against Egypt, in Cairo, on the 26th March, and the AFA are
also in talks with the FMF about a friendly against Mexico in February, to be played in Dubai.
Domestically, the end of the championship - and the imminent re-opening of the European transfer
windows - mean it's [.
They put four past the USA in their opening match - and didn't convince the press or fans. They put
four past Colombia in the second - and didn't convince the press or fans. Now, in their third match
together (after giving the subs a run out in the last group game against Paraguay), Argentina's
[...]
Against tricky opponents, Argentina got off to a winning start in their campaign for the 2010 World
Cup. The goals in the Monumental came from near identical free kicks from Juan Román Riquelme, who
showed (as one of our readers has already suggested) that Alfio Basile had every reason to show
such confidence in him [...]
Coco Basile makes eight changes to the 'first choice' starting eleven which saw off the USA and
Colombia, for tonight's group decided against Paraguay. The match will decide the group winners and
thus who has to play Mexico and Peru in the quarters, but both managers are putting out
experimental sides. Paraguay will switch to a [...]
Play the best football of the tournament they may have done, overcoming early defensive worries to
win all five matches en route to the final, and scoring sixteen along the way - but not for the
first time, Argentina have bottled it against Brazil when it really mattered. It happened in Peru
in 2004, when [...]
Julio Arca for Middlesbrough was the only Argentine involved on the first weekend of the English
league season, on Saturday, and the country's representation in Europe for the season began in
earnest on Wednesday. First of all, Barcelona travelled to Munich to play Bayern in the Franz
Beckenbauer Cup, and somewhat more importantly (because it was [.
I should admit something before I begin: I'd already had a couple of cocktails when in Messi's
honour, I decided to end the evenining with a fernet with Coke (very popular in Argentina, you
see) about half an hour before coming back to my hostel to write this, so how coherent the
following will be, I'm not [...]
Argentina make their debut in the 2010 World Cup campaign tonight, with everything prepared to be
the main focus for the start of a ball-obsessed weekend for the nation's sport fans. On Sunday, the
national rugby side will play the biggest match in their history when they take on South Africa in
the Rugby World [...]
The 25th October 1997 was an historic day in the history of football, and today we arrive at its
tenth anniversary. Because ten years ago today, in the Monumental, Boca Juniors beat River Plate
2-1. Historic for what exactly? No, my fellow River fans, it wasn't the last time we lost a
superclásico (the unbeaten run [...]
Perhaps not the most serious problem really, given that he didn't take part in either of the first
two qualifiers. Hernán Crespo suffered a slight contraction in his right leg whilst training with
the selección on Thursday, and is now a doubt for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Bolivia.
With the top three tiers in Argentine football having broken up for the summer (speaking of which
the lower division results service will make a belated return tomorrow for Primeras C and D), the
main focus for Argentine fans this weekend was on their Europe-based players. In England, Carlos
Tevez and Javier Mascherano found themselves [.
Former Argentina and Independiente forward Raúl Emilio Bernao died of a hepatitis-related illness
on Wednesday, aged 66. Bernao was born in Sarandí on the 4th November 1941, and played in nearby
Avellaneda for Independiente from 1961 to 1970, scoring 41 goals from his position on the right
wing.
Now, all this national team news might be getting confusing, so I'll
go through this very slowly, aside from anything else to make sure I've not got anything mixed up.
The senior national side progressed to the final of the Copa América on Wednesday night. On
Thursday, Argentina played two more football matches - [.
As an Argentine forward, there are surely more sensible career moves than going to play for Napoli.
With a crowd who still worship a certain Señor Maradona to this day, you wouldn't think anyone
would be prepared to risk the (inevitably unflattering) comparisons - would you?
It's perhaps not quite right to refer to Australia as 'Down Under' on this site, being as how
Buenos Aires is actually further south than Sydney, but nearly all the players named in Alfio
Basile's squad for the 11th September friendly against the Socceroos will have to fly in from
Europe, and the remaining one [...]
The long-awaited clash in Melbourne between Australia and Argentina finally arrived on Tuesday,
and it was the visitors who emerged victorious from a well-fought match, by a narrow margin but
having put in a performance that both the squad and the press back home were more than pleased
with.
Away in Caracas against a Venezuelan side who surprisingly won their first qualifier thanks to what
some are calling the greatest free kick of all time, the selección may have been more concerned
with getting the job done than with doing it in style, especially with so many of the players in
for a long [...]
Somehow the announcement of a new River manager always seems to be met with slightly more fanfare
than at other clubs. Perhaps because River's fans have a reputation for being Argentina's most
difficult to please, perhaps because the board are amongst the least competent so there's an always
an element of who'll last longer, them [.
There have been injuries left, right and centre in Argentine football in the last 24 hours. Both
the selección and leading club sides have been hit, as have Boca by the death of Gustavo Eberto
and the news that Juan Román Riquelme won't be arriving from Villarreal this year.
The most infamous piece of cheating and the most famous piece of individual footballing genius in
footballing history came of age this summer - it's now 21 years and a couple of months since Diego
Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal, coupled with that extraordinary slalom through half of England,
dumped England out of the 1986 [...]
Juan Román Riquelme's two magnificent free kicks on Saturday night, followed by Argentines
bombarding Spanish football websites to let Chilean manager Mauricio Pellegrini know that he really
should be considering Riquelme for inclusion in Villarreal's side, will not apparently be enough to
save the playmaker's bacon at the Spanish side. 'We're hoping that in December [.
I've updated the 'Photos' section for a week or two. These ones won't stay up as long as the normal
lot, because I've been a little bit egotistical and put all of my own handiwork up this time - a
small gift from me to you the reader for sticking with the site whilst I [...]
One of the best things in the whole world of football is a little off colour at the moment - Lionel
Messi's torn a muscle in his thigh. La Pulga is going to be out for around a month, and most
immediately, will miss Barcelona's Camp Nou showdown with Real Madrid this weekend. He can take
[...]
Alfio Basile's darkest hour in charge of the national team - one of the national team's darkest
hours full stop - came 14 years ago when a Colombian side including Carlos Valderrama and Faustino
Asprilla arrived in Buenos Aires for a World Cup qualifier and tore their hosts limb from limb in
front of a [...]
The Copa América has its first absolutely mathematically watertight quarter-finalists. Both
Argentina and Paraguay will progress from Group C after the albiceleste gave Colombia short shrift
in the second round of group matches. And under a year after announcing his international
retirement, guess who starred?
The selección's main striker may be out for the rest of the tournament, but in the final group
match with Paraguay, manager Alfio Basile was shown he didn't need him. Because who should step up
to break the deadlock in the 78th minute of a tight match but Javier Masche... hang on no, there's
got [...]
For those not already aware, the Copa América group stage came to an end with Argentina's defeat
of Paraguay last night, and the quarter-finals kick off tomorrow (Saturday). Uruguay (Group A) and
Chile (Group B) have qualified as the two best 3rd-placed sides, and the draw is right here.
