Godoy Cruz qualified for next year's Copa Libertadores on Friday night with a 3-1 away win over

Mendoza ever to play in ... Continue reading →
Fox Soccer Plus, scheduled to debut on March 1, has released TV schedules for the first three
weeks of its programming, giving soccer fans a glimpse of what they can expect on the new soccer
network.
Fox Soccer Plus will show two live Premier League games each weekend as well as two on delay in
addition to live games during mid-week.
It's yet to be officially announced, but the Argentina starting eleven for the first match of their
World Cup campaign is now widely known and there are unlikely to be any surprises, barring
injuries. Jonás Gutiérrez is in at right ... Continue reading →
First, for all those who are as big on detail as myself, I apologise for that headline, because
there's nothing I hate more than English speakers referring to the world's most modest, understated
football club as 'Real'. But why let that get in the way of a not especially good headline? Real
Madrid might be [.

The first football of the new year is already underway in Argentina; on Saturday Banfield and
Huracán played out a 0-0 draw in which the champions of Argentina had more chances but couldn't
put them away with Santiago Silva, whilst in the first of the AFA's official triangular tournaments
(there's no round robin of the [.
River Plate and Boca Juniors drew 1-1 in the last clásico of the Torneos de Verano on Sunday
night, after which a penalty shootout decided that the Copa Revancha went to River, who won the
penalties 3-2. You can watch both goals and the shootout right here. Lucas Viatri headed Boca into
the lead after [.
The second round of the Torneo Clausura is upon us already, played in midweek so as to get ahead on
things with the Copa Libertadores coming up and the need to finish the championship in time for the
break prior to the World Cup. Estudiantes take on Gimnasia in the clásico platense on Wednesday,
Racing [.
Saturday's matches in the ninth round of the 2010 Torneo Clausura saw Independiente return to the
top of the table after Godoy Cruz took the overnight lead, Estudiantes beat Newell's thanks to
goals from Roselli and Boselli (the first of whom was playing for the visitors but scored in his
own net), and then two [.
Round 10 only ended on Thursday afternoon, but already the eleventh round of the Torneo Clausura
arrives this evening. Godoy Cruz will be hoping to crank up the pressure on leaders Independiente
when they visit Estudiantes de La Plata in the weekend's first match, which might be their toughest
assignment yet Estudiantes themselves would [.
Diego Simeone stood down as manager of San Lorenzo on Saturday afternoon following yet another home
defeat for the Boedo team. Having lost 1-0 against Gimnasia La Plata, El Cholo announced his
decision to the press on the basis that, 'this is what's best for the club.' Under Simeone, San
Lorenzo had gone on a [.
I'm a little distracted with various things at present, not least the preparations for my move next
week to Buenos Aires. As such there's no Argentines Abroad this week, other than a congratulations
to Lionel Messi for that astonishing four-goal haul in tonight's European Cup match between
Barcelona and Arsenal, which makes him Barça's all-time [.
The fifteenth round of the 2010 Torneo Clausura features not one but two clásicos, both played on
Sunday. By the time they swing round, any of Godoy Cruz, Independiente or Estudiantes will have had
the chance to claim the leadership in the chase for the league title I'll be at River vs Godoy on
[.
Monday evening saw the final two matches of the 2010 Torneo Clausura, and there were late
equalisers in both of them for the visiting teams. Argentinos Juniors took the lead away to Arsenal
de Sarandí, but after the hosts had turned the match on its head it fell to Facundo Coria to
rescue a point [.
After the madness and midweek distraction of the World Cup preliminary squad list, it's back to
business for one last push in the domestic league: the final round of a nailbiting 2010 Torneo
Clausura is upon us, and either Estudiantes ... Continue reading →
The first big transfer story of the Argentine post-season has broken not here in Buenos Aires, but
England. Why did I move down here again? The Star, a highly-regarded British news publication*
claimed on Monday that Sir Alex Ferguson, the ... Continue reading →
Hearts were in mouths this afternoon in Ezeiza when Lionel Messi hit the ground in training after a
collision with Javier Mascherano which saw Argentina's medical staff running over to help him. He
is, apparently, absolutely fine though. And whilst ... Continue reading →
Boca Juniors are currently going through something of a miserable post-season tour of the United
States a few evenings ago they lost 1-0 to Los Angeles Galaxy and on Wednesday night they crashed
3-0 against Seattle Sounders (you can ... Continue reading →
The AFA have finally deemed to release the fixtures that were supposed to come out at a civilised
hour on Wednesday, and so just as I was about to go to bed, I've typed them all up for you. The ...

Presidential interest in national soccer is nothing new to us. With so much popular will and
attention fixated on national teams, national soccer has long been mixed with executive
politicking. The recent World Cup has illustrated this phenomenon more clearly than ever, with
notable presidential "arbitrations" occurring in the French, Nigerian, and North Korean football
associations in the wake of poor tournament performances.
After more ins and outs, ups and downs and all round tedious moaning than a particularly tawdry
adult film, Juan Román Riquelme has finally signed his new four-year contract with Boca Juniors.
Putting pen to paper earlier today, the Boca ... Continue reading →
A brief update to the weekend fixture list posted here this morning: it now looks very much,
according to an Estudiantes-supporting friend of mine in La Plata, like Estudiantes will indeed be
playing Quilmes at 'home' in Quilmes' own stadium. ... Continue reading →
Following the resignation of Héctor Rivoira from the Huracán bench on Monday, the Parque
Patricios club have moved swiftly to find a replacement. They announced on Monday that they'd given
a contract to Miguel Ángel Brindisi, just over eight years ... Continue reading →
I'm a little late in linking to this, due to a daytrip to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay on
Thursday, but today my latest post on In Bed With Maradona went online. It briefly looks back over

Boca Juniors' season goes from bad to worse. Beaten in the superclásico and then left without a
manager after Claudio Borghi finally (allegedly before the match, and independent of its result)
decided his position was untenable Banfield's Julio César ... Continue reading →
Saturday involved an early start and a late finish for me in socialising terms in the evening, so
here are the goals from it now. Quilmes claimed only their second win of the season, at home to All

First of all, happy new year, HEGS readers! On Sunday the first of Argentina's clubs returned to
their training facilities to prepare for the pre-season of the Torneos de Verano and (for some)
Copa Libertadores qualification. The new year brings familiar issues though: Banfield are starting
to accept that they're likely to lose Santiago Silva, whilst [.
If you're an eagle-eyed regular reader of HEGS, you may recall at some point during the last week a
comment being made about dodgy Argentine NGOs trying to help secure funding for certain barra brava
gangs to travel to the World Cup in South Africa to support the national side in June. Now, if you
[.
A quick news update this one: It was confirmed on Thursday that the Argentine national team will
play two friendlies in Buenos Aires prior to leaving for the World Cup. The original plan was to
play the matches in Europe (fans there have more money, you see), but the players apparently
requested that they play [.
No, not in the Primera. Sunday saw the first competitive football of 2010 in Argentina, but it
didn't come in the form of a particularly tasty Torneo de Verano match. The Torneos del Interior,
the third division of the non-affiliated Torneos Argentinos, kicked off this weekend. There'll be
matches stretching from the Bolivian borderlands right [.
I'm giving the Torneos de Verano a fairly wide berth, as readers may have noticed, mainly because I
find them mind-numbingly dull. All the same, it would be wrong to totally ignore them, and there've
been some interesting results in the last few days. Here, then, you can watch the goals from
Estudiantes' 4-1 demolition [.

The last decade of Argentine Futbol was characterized by the supremacy of the so called "grandes",
particularly River Plate and Boca Juniors. The economic stability of these clubs allowed them to
invest money to sign star players and build new facilities, as well as to destine capital and
resources for the development of players in the clubs' youth divisions.
When you're bottom of the league with a sorry total of 8 points at the halfway mark in the season,
something has got to give. And so it was that
Xerez Club Deportivo sacked the
manager and the sporting director, with a change of president to boot, in an attempt to arrest an
alarming slide straight back into La Segunda.
It may not count for anything, but a superclásico always attracts a lot of attention regardless,
so here are the goals from Wednesday night's 3-1 River Plate victory in the Copa Desafío in Mar
del Plata. The two teams will square up again in Mendoza at the weekend for the Copa Revancha.
Paraguayan starlet Ricardo [.
The goals from Saturday night's match in Mar del Plata between Independiente and Racing are right
here. Racing claimed the Copa Ciudad de Mar del Plata with a 2-1 win over their Avellaneda rivals,
with goals from new signing Claudio Bieler and Matías Cahais giving them the advantage before El
Rojo's consolation with 8 minutes [.
The first round of matches in the 2010 Torneo Clausura is upon us tonight, at last. A full preview
of the tournament will follow over or shortly after the weekend I've been tied up during the week
writing about Salvador Cabañas's shooting in Mexico (HEGS naturally wishes him well). The closest
thing to a [.
The goals (and other highlights) from Friday night's two matches in the 2010 Torneo Clausura can be
watched right here on HEGS now. Both matches were home wins Federico Higuaín got the only one of
the game for Godoy Cruz against Gimnasia with nine minutes to play, and in the other game
Birmingham City [.
To play in the Argentine league that is, not the national team.
Roberto Ayala did not renew his contract with Real Zaragoza and is now free to sign with any
club.
It was rumored that Ayala would sign with River, then Independiente and now it appears that he
may be signing with Racing.
The goal videos from both Saturday's and Sunday's matches will be online on Monday evening
Saturday's haven't been posted here yet because I've had a rather dislocated weekend. The weekend's
games saw the champions start where they left off or rather not, since Banfield's title was won in
spite of a loss in [.
