Sunday, 19th April sees what might be an historic clash in La Bombonera between Boca Juniors and
River Plate. If Julio Grondona gets his (and the only rule that's ever followed in Argentine
football is that what Don Julio wants, Don Julio gets) this will be the last superclásico of the
'short tournament' era.
The full fixtures for the Primera División A Torneo Clausura 2009 were released by the
AFA a little while ago, and now I've got a weekend when (relatively) little is happening to
write about on HEGS, here's the full fixture list for the season. Primera División A Torneo
Clausura 2009: Round 1 (8th Feb) Club Atlético Huracán vs [.
God knows why the AFA do this every bloody year. As usual, they've released the full fixture list
the day after the first weekend's fixtures were announced. What possible good comes of this is for
Julio Grondona to explain (not that anyone really cares enough to ask him), other than to guarantee
two straight days [.
Don't worry Racing fans, that's not Ricardo Caruso Lombardi in the headline. Godoy Cruz striker
Leandro Caruso is off to Italy, where he'll play next season for Udinese after passing a medical.
At Huracán, president Carlos Babington wants to keep Javier Pastore at least until the end of the
year, so has signed an agreement [.
Yes, it's January, and thus to the majority of HEGS readers that headline is six months early, but
Argentina's in a different hemisphere, you know. And the summer friendlies are just about to start.
There's the traditional Torneo de Verano between the 'Big Five', as well as the other regular
events - the 'City Cups' [.
It's been a busy few days for Sergio Batista's Under 20 team in Venezeula whilst I've been away.
Two more group matches have yielded four points in spite of underwhelming performances - you can
see highlights of both games here. In Mar del Plata on Saturday, Boca Juniors beat River Plate in
the year's first [.
Argentina's B side take on Panama in a friendly in Santa Fe tonight at 7pm local time, with manager
Diego Maradona taking the opportunity to have a look at some of the players in his plans for the
national side who are playing their football at home. Tuesday evening saw a press conference
following the [.
The goals from Sunday's two Promoción second leg matches, which resulted in both Gimnasia La Plata
and Rosario Central keeping their places in the Primera A, are now online and you can watch them
right here. Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata 3 0 Atlético Rafaela (3-3 agg., Gimnasia stay up due to
'sporting advantage') Rosario Central [.
Argentine champions Boca Juniors sent out a mostly reserve side for their first match of 2009, but
were still by far the better team against San Lorenzo in Mar del Plata. All the same they couldn't
find a way past the Cuervo backline. Earlier on Saturday, in Sao Paulo, Estudiantes got battered
5-1 by Corinthians.
Gary Medel isn't coming to Buenos Aires after all, in spite of last week's expectations.
Universidad Católica, the player's Chilean club, have rejected Independiente's terms on the
deal which had been announced last week to bring one of South America's most exiciting young
midfielders to the Primera A.
Independiente and Racing Club played out a pre-season clásico de Avellaneda down by the
seaside in Mar del Plata on Saturday night, and the result wasn't an encouraging one for Racing
fans hoping their side will be able to keep up appearances in the Clausura and avoid another
relegation battle. With goals from Hernán Fredes, [.
For some reason, the fifth round of the Torneo Clausura begins on a Thursday, so here, 24 hours
earlier than normal, is the weekend's fixture list. Sunday's clásico sees Independiente host
Boca Juniors, whilst San Martín play a crucial relegation clash on Thursday in Mendoza. Racing
will be hoping Tigre don't get their claws back [.
Ins and outs for the two giants of Argentine football: champions Boca Juniors appear to have lost
Neri Cardozo against their wishes, whilst new River Plate manager Néstor Gorosito is on
the verge of making his first signing, Colombian centre back Humberto Mendoza. Independiente have
some good news: Daniel Montenegro isn't going anywhere.
Diego Maradona's not pleased with the AFA, after revealing that the reason for his not calling up
Juan Román Riquelme and Sebastián Battaglia was that the governing body insisted Boca
Juniors play on Sunday rather than Saturday, even though the date of the France friendly has been
fixed for months.
Each team will make one major change to the starting XIs posted here on HEGS a few hours ago.
Injury keeps Juan Román Riquelme out of the Boca Juniors lineup; his place will be taken by
Osvaldo Gaitán. Radamel Falcao García, meanwhile, has been passed fit by River's medics, so Diego
Buonanotte makes way and [.
On the 20th of this month, a national side consisting solely of players from the domestic league
(which HEGS shall henceforth refer to as 'Argentina B') will take on Panama in Santa Fe. Diego
Maradona announced the squad (including six Boca Juniors or Estudiantes players who won't be
involved unless their club have been eliminated from the Copa Libertadores [.
'Where's my week gone?!' I can hear you inwardly asking. Don't worry you've not been in a coma
since Monday. Due to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers (notably that between Argentina and Brazil
in Rosario on Saturday) the AFA have moved the third round of the Torneo Apertura to midweek.
Rosario Central vs River [.
The latest Torneo de Verano match was up in Argentina's Andean northwest, and the Salta crowd saw a
Boca reserve side take on an Independiente team still struggling to regain the cohesion of the 4-0
win over Racing in the summer's first match. Boca won 2-0. Carlos Ischia was keeping back Boca's
first string for the [.
If the AFA thought they had problems with crowd control in the top flight for the last few seasons,
they can't have been happy bunnies on Monday. Chacarita Juniors, whose previous spells in Primera A
have been most notable for very badly behaved crowds, most infamously (and tragically) when playing
Boca Juniors, are back in [.
On Tuesday the AFA announced the first weekend's fixtures for the 2009 Torneo Apertura in the
Primera División, and their website promptly decided to stop working (for me at least, but I've
had some internet issues tonight so maybe it's the only site that's still not loading on my PC).
The remaining fixtures haven't yet [.
Don't be surprised to hear about training ground bust-ups at Independiente before long. Juan
Krupoviesa is on the point of signing on loan for El Rojo, and when he arrives at the training
complex he'll meet up with new team-mate Daniel Montenegro; a man whose leg he tried to break when
the two were on [.
Néstor Gorosito's head and neck (not to mention most of his back) must be absolutely
sweltering under that mullet. His new team managed to keep cool enough in their 2009 Torneo de
Verano debut, though, that after going 1-0 down to Independiente shortly before half time, an
impressive River Plate (in so far as a side [.
The final weekend of the 2009 Torneo Clausura is upon us at last, and it's going to be a dramatic
one. Racing and Newell's celebrate having nothing to play for to kick things off on Friday night,
whilst Saturday sees Central take on Godoy Cruz in a match that could be vital to next season's
[...]
In circumstances about as controversial as they come, and after thirteen minutes of second half
stoppage time, Vélez Sársfield beat Huracán by a single late goal from Maxi Moralez who was sent
off for his celebration to climb above them in the table and claim the Torneo Clausura 2009 title.
Huracán had a [.
Day one - July 29th 2009, Manchester United vs Boca Juniors, 5.30 GMT, Allianz
Stadium.
1. Nicknames: The Manure Handlers (Los Bosteros) and The King of Trophies (El Rey de Copas)
2. Stadium: Estadio Alberto J. Armando (La Bombonera), with a 49,000 capacity.
4.
Funny how things come full circle. Back in June, Argentina narrowly beat Colombia on a pitch so bad
due to River Plate's decision to stage a rock concert on it a few days previously that Diego
Maradona threw a hissy fit which saw the match with Brazil last month moved to Rosario Central's
[...]
Well well. We've been told he's staying with Racing, and the pessimistic presumed he'd be on his
way back to Russia. On Monday it was revealed that Maximiliano Moralez is avoiding a return flight
to Moscow, where he was never really happy in the six months he spent with FC Moscow, by taking a
rather [.
Yes, that's right. San Lorenzo entered the summer action in Mar del Plata on Wednesday night
against Racing, and they suffered the indignity of actually losing to Juan Manuel Llop's side. In
what was essentially a match between reserve sides, there was plenty of poor passing and neither
side looked fully interested.
Boca Juniors' goalkeeping crisis should shortly be put to bed after it was confirmed on Thursday
that they've agreed a fee with Spanish side Getafe to buy Roberto Abbondanzieri back. The Xeneize
will pay €300,000 to the Madrid club for their former custodian. Abbondanzieri, for his part,
had already pleaded with both sides to strike a [.
Wednesday brought the news that Cristian Fabbiani will be staying with Newell's Old Boys after his
attempted signing by River Plate finally fell through, and a late equaliser ensured they could only
draw with San Lorenzo in their final Torneo de Verano match (Boca having claimed the summer title
by beating Racing 2-0 on Tuesday [.
Ah, it's been a while. Defending champions Boca begin at altitude in Jujuy on Sunday evening, a
situation Diego Maradona isn't happy about (the time, rather than the location); two of the
Apertura finalists give us the first match of the season as San Lorenzo visit Tigre, and
Independiente play their first 'home' match at [.
The second round of Apertura fixtures is upon us already. Apologies that this post didn't go out as
usual at midday GMT, but my internet providers have been having server issues and although I
thought I was online when I pressed the button to schedule this post last night, I'd evidently lost
my connection.
The goals from the seventh round of the 2009 Torneo Clausura are online now, and you can view all
21 of them on the TN Sportblog by clicking here. Read on for the running order of this video, and a
link to the goals from the lower divisions this weekend if you want to see [...]
A very quick mention of a couple of moves in the domestic league which are mooted. Juan
Sebastián Verón could be leaving Estudiantes, whilst San Lorenzo are keeping hold of
their manager (by the looks of it) and Independiente are about to decide on a new one following
Miguel Angel Santoro's resignation at the weekend [.
Godoy Cruz won their match against San Martín de Tucumán 3-2 when it was completed at the
weekend, and the goals are online now - you can watch all of them right here. The two scored before
the crowd trouble a few weeks ago, and then the three (along with a few other highlights) on
[...]
Two Independiente players may be in line for moves to foreign climes soon. One of them you've
probably heard of (if you follow the Argentine league, anyway), the other... well, if you've heard
of the other you need to get out more. Lucas Pusineri, 32-year-old midfield stalwart, might have an
offer from Major League Soccer, [.
Vélez Sársfield visit Gimnasia La Plata on Saturday hoping to extend their lead at the top of the
Primera División table, with second-placed Lanús set to host Rosario Central the night before, in
Friday's second match. Even when they're seventh in the table, every Racing match is a relegation
decider, but if they beat San [.
Leaders Lanús host Diego Simeone's San Lorenzo in a clash of ideologies on Saturday.
Independiente's slimmed-down squad take on Rosario Central in a match that could be key to the
relegation fight, especially if El Rojo decide to lie down in order to make things tighter for
rivals Racing (mind you, how will we tell [.
Last season they were playing in the Torneo Argentino A, the third division section for clubs not
affiliated to the AFA, but on Sunday Atlético Tucumán ensured their city will continue to have
Primera División representation next season by thrashing relegation-threatened Talleres de
Córdoba 4-1 to confirm the B Nacional title.
Back to the league after the thrills and spills of the international break. Three matches remain,
and this weekend the endgame gets going with two clásicos on Sunday one in La Bombonera, where San
Lorenzo will be the 'home' side, and one in Avellaneda between Racing and Boca. The clash between
River and Tigre [.
