The latest double-header of qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is upon us
this weekend, so with my head now sufficiently back on track after two weeks back home, it seems as
good a time as any to have a look at what our boys abroad have been doing this weekend. [...]
Diego Maradona announced the home-based players for the France friendly on Monday (surprise
surprise, Boca Juniors won't be inconvenienced by any call-ups...), after another fun-packed
weekend for the foreign legion, during which Nico Burdisso rescued a record for his manager in
Italy, Lucas Lobos got his first goal of the season in Mexico, Lucho González [.
Boca Juniors' squad took off for Europe on Sunday in readiness to take part in the Audi Cup in
Munich (their first match is on Wednesday against Manchester United), but over the weekend there
have already been some Argentine clubs and players in pre-season action. River Plate beat Everton
thanks to a great Ariel Ortega [.
It's been a quiet-ish week for the main Argentine contingent in Europe, but there have been one or
two scorers. In Mexico, meanwhile, the new year's championship is already underway, and there were
five goals from Argentines as well as a couple of other decent contributions there. Step this
way... In Italy, Serie A leaders Internazionale [.
In England, there was a clash to bring back memories of when the superclásico was high profile
enough to form a Copa Libertadores semi-final, rather than being played between two teams who
probably won't even qualify for the tournament, as Javier Mascherano's Liverpool took on Carlos
Tevez's Manchester City.
The European league seasons are now all over, as is the Mexican championship, but Argentines have
once again had a say, with European places still up for grabs, another title claimed in France and
one of Maradona's new boys very nearly turning the tide of the Mexican playoff final. With the
trophies wrapped up in [.
Early on Sunday morning, violence once again reared its head in the world of Argentine football,
when Fernando Cáceres Independiente's reserve team coach and a former Argentina international was
shot by robbers, taking a bullet in his right eye. At the time of writing, he continues in the
Carrillo Hospital in Ciudadela [.
This will be a very quick roundup, because January always makes me a little lazy with the amount of
stuff I want to write, due to the lack of meaningful domestic league action. Still, there were some
performances from our boys abroad in the last week, and one perhaps notable absence. That absence
was Carlos Tevez, [.
An anniversary was marked in fitting fashion by one of our foreign contingent in the weekend just
gone, whilst another won a league title and two claimed a Brazilian state trophy - to find out
which ones, you'll have to read on. The winners in Brazil were Andrés D'Alessandro and Pablo
Guiñazú, who helped Internacional do [.
With league titles on the verge of being decided across Europe, there were some important
contributions made by Argentines this weekend, and at least one other could come on Tuesday when
Lionel Messi's Barcelona take on Chelsea in the European Cup semi-final first leg. To see who did
what over the weekend just gone, though, [.
...Plus the European Cup semi-final second legs. That's an easy one to get out the way quickly:
Carlos Tevez didn't feature as Manchester United booked their place in the final, whilst Lionel
Messi had a quiet game for Barcelona but set up a last-gasp equaliser for Andrés Iniesta to put
Barcelona through on away goals [.
HEGS Award voting season (nominations to the address in that post please) got underway with another
championship for a team with Argentine representation this weekend, as Porto claimed their fourth
consecutive Portuguese crown. Elsewhere Martín Demichelis celebrated the birth of his child with a
rare goal in Germany, and Hernán Crespo started for Internazionale!
The chaotic 3-1 defeat to Brazil on Saturday night wasn't the only action for Argentine players
over the weekend. There was a full programme of matches in Mexico's Primera División, and plenty
of Argentines had starring roles. In a little taster as a first proper Argentines Abroad of the
season, Tom Clark gave me a [.
As the selección converge on Ezeiza from all corners of the world (well, western Europe) for the
final, must-not-balls-up-this-time double-header of World Cup qualifiers against Peru (Saturday in
El Monumental) and Uruguay (a week on Wednesday in Montevideo's Estadio Centenario), it's
heartening that some of them have had more auspicious weekends than Carlos Tevez, who [.
This is probably the shortest Argentines Abroad update you're ever likely to read, but after
leaving it for such a long time before last week I'm eager not to break the habit. Also, with so
few leagues playing during the recent international break, Our Man In Mexico, Tom Clark, has
effectively written it for me [.
It was a mixed week for Argentines in England Pablo Zabaleta was sent off and Carlos Tevez had to
toil on his own up front as Manchester City could only draw 1-1 with Wigan Athletic, and Javier
Mascherano and Emiliano Insúa's Liverpool lost in circumstances which were either hilarious or
exasperating depending on your [.
On Saturday one group of Argentines abroad got off to a very good start in a new campaign José
Luis Brown's national Under 17 team beat Honduras 1-0 in the first match of their age group World
Cup in Nigeria. Sergio Araujo scored the only goal of the game. Around the world in the [...]
First of all, Merry Christmas to all HEGS readers. I'm a day late but I gave myself the day off
yesterday. Hope you don't mind. River Plate star Diego Buonanotte didn't have such a good time,
sadly. At 6:45 this morning, he was driving three friends back from a nightclub in Teodolina (his
hometown in [.
It's not too often I write one of these covering midweek matches, but Wednesday 13th May was a bit
of a high watermark for Argentine representatives in foreign football this season. The Copa
Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions League, as well as the national cup finals in both Spain and
Italy, all had important contributions from [.
After last week's midweek cup finals in Spain and Italy, the gongs are starting to be handed out
for the competitions people actually care about now, and already we've got three more league
champion sides in Europe with Argentine representation to add to AZ in the Netherlands and Porto in
Portugal. The Spanish, Italian and [.
The final full-length Argentines Abroad of 2008-2009 comes with just a day and a half left for you
to get your nominations in for the HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste award for the Best Argentine Abroad of
the season that's now finishing. So far we've had relatively few nominations in, so if you'd like
your favourite [.
Nominations for the HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste award for Best Argentine Abroad 2008-2009 have now
closed. Any which reach me after this post won't be counted. When a full rundown of all the
nominees has been prepared (probably over the weekend) they'll be posted both here and over on MA,
and the final round of [.
The nominations have been counted for the 2008-2009 HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste Award for Best
Argentine Abroad, and they're an interesting bunch. Four players were nominated, and last year's
winner Carlos Tevez isn't among them. The top flights of Italy, Spain, Mexico and England have
provided us with the nominees, of whom three haven't previously [.
If you've not already voted for our Argentines Abroad award, now's the time. Less than 24 hours
remaining! Argentina has recently had its own elections, but this week sees the culmination of a
far more important one. You've got only six days left to vote, if you haven't already, for your
winner in the HEGS / [.
Next season's Argentines Abroad (on which note, the HEGS / MA Award winner will be announced on
Thursday) are swelling their ranks in the annual exodus from the banks of the Paraná and Río de
la Plata (the rivers of Babyl... I'll stop, shall I? OK). Rodrigo Palacio is finally leaving La
Bombonera and Santiago [.
The votes have been counted, and after the Copa Libertadores was decided on Wednesday night, it's
time to reveal the real question all of Latin America wants answering: who, in the opinions of the
readers of Hasta El Gol Siempre and Mundo Albiceleste, has been the best Argentine footballer
playing in a non-Argentine league over [.
His fifteen year career took in ten titles: four Argentine leagues, one Copa Brasil, one French
Cup, one Copa Libertadores, one Supercopa Sudamericana, one Panamerican Games title, and one Youth
World Cup. He was part of the most successful River Plate team of all time, and played for ten
clubs in six different countries.
After a week of recriminations for the selección, Diego Maradona travels to Europe to bang some
heads together and break the news to some players that he'll be picking Argentine-based players
over them in future. All the same, there's some food for thought for him ('thought', Diego: that's
'pensamiento' in castellano, a word you might [.
Argentines Abroad is delayed slightly this week by the Monday night fixture bumping the normal
domestic coverage a day on, and the fact I've been writing an article for another site (more of
which later in the week). That's useful in some ways because the Copa del Rey in Spain has ensured
there's action to [.
Well, the national team were abroad, of course, but we're not counting them. The Brazilian and
Mexican leagues were the major top flights in action in spite of the international break during the
weekend just gone, and there were goals in both of them. You can read about them and watch them
right here, as [.
On the 22nd December, Argentina will play a friendly against the Catalán national side. Diego
Maradona's not allowed to watch (the appeal against his ban was thrown out by FIFA on Wednesday),
but he's named the squad all the same. Catalonia were banned from playing a match with the USA back
in 2007 but, when [.
Is it December already? Then it must be time for Argentines across Europe to wonder what possessed
them to move to a continent where Christmas is celebrated in a cold climate. The performances are
still decent, though. Gonzalo Higuaín scored again for Real Madrid as Lionel Messi ensured
Barcelona kept their noses in front; Carlos [.
Estudiantes de La Plata played the final of the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, and
despite leading for most of the match through a Mauro Boselli header, they found themselves taken
to extra time by another header this one from Pedro, who's made a bit of history himself. In the
extra [...]
It was a relatively quiet weekend for Argentina's representatives in the exterior in the week prior
to the announcement of Diego Maradona's squad for the friendly with France (which is announced on
Tuesday and will include Seba Verón and Juan Román Riquelme), with some of the main
stories being transfer rumours.
Nominations for the 2009 HEGS award for Best Argentine Abroad (formerly known as Best Argentine In
A Foreign League) are now open. This year the award is being run in conjunction with Seba and John
at the wonderful Mundo Albiceleste, so hopefully we'll have more voters than ever before. The award
looks to recognise the Argentine [.
Argentina has recently had its own elections, but this week sees the culmination of a far more
important one. You've got only six days left to vote, if you haven't already, for your winner in
the HEGS / Mundo Albiceleste Award for Best Argentine Abroad. Pick Lionel Messi, Christian
Giménez, Diego Milito or Pablo Zabaleta, [.
Stories in the Brazilian press at the start of the week had Corinthians, one of the country's
biggest clubs and the current employers of Ronaldo, planning to sign Juan Román Riquelme from Boca
Juniors in a bid to boost their Copa Libertadores campaign in 2010, their centenary year. I've
written about it for Soccernet, and [.
HEGS has lost a little of its news value lately due to diminishing spare time on my part, so as of
today I'm going to try and remedy that slightly. As Thursday turns into Friday at the start of each
round from now on, I'll be giving a quick rundown of some of the main [...]
Going into the seventeenth round of fixtures in the Torneo Apertura, here's a brief rundown of
what's been going on off the pitch in the last few days. Estudiantes, of course, leave for the UAE
to take part in the Club World Cup this weekend, and they played their final domestic match of the
year [..
The reason for AA going up a little later this week was, of course, widely forecast, but I still
wanted to wait for it to be made official. Don't count your chickens and all that. On Tuesday (or
late on Monday if you're in Argentina), Lionel Messi was named France Football's European
Footballer Of The [.
