Atlético Club San Martín (a.k.a. San Martín de Mendoza) is a football (soccer) club from San
Martín in Mendoza Province, Argentina. They currently play in Zone C of the Torneo Argentino B,
which is the regionalised fourth tier of the Argentine Football Association league system. Clearly
inspired by the big boys of Argentine football using models [.
Saturday night saw the big South American clásico in Rosario as Argentina hosted Brazil in the
qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, and Diego Maradona's reign as manager will be marked forever by
the result: Argentina lost a qualifier at home for only the second time in their history. The first
was the 0-5 loss [.
You're probably wondering who in the world is Club Atlético Patronato de la Juventud Católica.
Well, they are an Argentine football club from the city of Paraná currently competing in the
Torneo Argentino A (Argentina's third tier of football). Based on the number of corporate logos on
their kits, they're also clearly well-sponsored.
We've been here before, and there's not a lot else more to say. In Asunción on Wednesday night,
needing a win to remain in the automatic qualification spots for the 2010 World Cup, Argentina
slumped to a defeat which sees Paraguay qualify for South Africa. Seba Verón was sent off early in
the second half [.
'Where's my week gone?!' I can hear you inwardly asking. Don't worry you've not been in a coma
since Monday. Due to the upcoming World Cup qualifiers (notably that between Argentina and Brazil
in Rosario on Saturday) the AFA have moved the third round of the Torneo Apertura to midweek.
Rosario Central vs River [.
One of the most eagerly awaited fixtures on the international football calendar will be staged in
Rosario on Saturday night, with Argentina in need of a win and Brazil no doubt eager to put one
over the on their great rivals and inflict what would be only Argentina's second ever home defeat
in World Cup [.
Some good news has already come Argentina's way prior to Saturday night's clásico against Brazil
in the Gigante del Arroyito in Rosario. Both Ecuador (0-2 away to Colombia) and Uruguay (0-1 away
to bottom placed Peru) lost, meaning Argentina are guaranteed to still be in the top four even if
they suffer their second ever [.
Club Atlético Rosario Central is a football club in Rosario, Argentina founded in 1889 by English
railway workers of the British-owned Central Argentine Railway company. Rosario Central currently
competes in the top tier of Argentine football the Argentine Primera División. Last night, with
the help of Argentine model and actress Silvina Luna (a self-professed Rosario fan) [.
Diego Maradona has announced a list of just eighteen Europe-based players for Argentina's final two
World Cup qualifying matches at home to Peru and away to Uruguay. There are numerous big-name
casualties of Diego's refusal to consider that any part of the defeats to Brazil and Paraguay might
have been his fault.
In the wake of Saturday night's humiliation in Rosario at the hands of Brazil, Diego Maradona has
been experimenting with personnel (if not formation) during Monday's training sessions. Whilst the
outfield positions are still up in the air, one position that does look guaranteed to change is in
goal, where Maradona seems set to use [.
Tuesday night saw a home win at the Gigante del Arroyito, not that it'll be much consolation for
the majority of supporters of the selección. River Plate played ineptly and when Diego Buonanotte
gave the ball away in midfield, Rosario Central were able to break and score their second goal in
an eventual 2-1 win.
All of a sudden, after the week that's just passed, 'Diego Maradona's Argentina' sounds less like a
porteño schoolboy's fantasy and more like a sneering insult from Brazilians and Paraguayans
towards their neighbours. If you've not had quite enough of reading (and, through The Enganche
Argentine football podcast) about it yet, though, you can click here [.
According to Ole, there will be changes to the callups for the remaining WC qualifiers.
Apparently more players from the domestic league will be called up and some of the European
based players like Gago, Maxi Rodriguez and Diego Milito will not be called up for the remainder of
the WC qualifying campaign.
The chaotic 3-1 defeat to Brazil on Saturday night wasn't the only action for Argentine players
over the weekend. There was a full programme of matches in Mexico's Primera División, and plenty
of Argentines had starring roles. In a little taster as a first proper Argentines Abroad of the
season, Tom Clark gave me a [.
Racing play Gimnasia La Plata in another crucial relegation encounter; Vélez play San Lorenzo in a
clash of potential title contenders; Lanús are at home in the clásico del Sur and... what's
this?... Boca Juniors are playing on a Saturday?! The world has gone mad. If you love Argentine
football and want to forget the [.
The goals from the weekend's football action in Argentina are online now, and as you can see them
on the TN Sportblog, whose video this week deigns the round worthy of having all its goals shown
(something they've neglected to do on two occasions already this season). For the goals from the
Primera División, click [.
Club Atlético Newell's Old Boys is a football club from Rosario, Argentina currently playing in
the the top tier of Argentine football the Argentine Primera División. On August 28th at the hotel
Ros Tower in Rosario, Newell's Old Boys presented their Topper home, away and third kits for the
2009/10 season.
The weekend's clásico was a damp squib, with San Lorenzo and Racing cancelling each other out in
Boedo. Earlier on Sunday Newell's beat Lanús to go fifth, whilst on Saturday Chacarita's pointless
start to the season continued with a 3-1 defeat to Colón, and Independiente took a point from the
champions, Vélez Sársfield.
All twenty-six of the goals from the 2009 Torneo Apertura are online now, and you can watch them
through the TN Sportblog by clicking here. Read on for the running order, as usual. Running order
for TN Show de Goles: Huracán (blue) vs Estudiantes (red & white stripes) Colón (red & black
halves) vs Chacarita (white with weird [.
You thought you'd read everything worth reading in preview to this weekend's World Cup qualifying
matches, didn't you? Well you're wrong (unless you've already read this). Because this week, in our
second interview, The Enganche have been talking to Mario Kempes, and asking him about making his
Argentina debut at altitude away to Bolivia, what [.
The third round of the Torneo Apertura 2009 has been written in zeros, ones and twos so far, with
Boca Juniors getting a second home draw of the season, 1-1 against Newell's Old Boys, to add to the
0-0, 2-2 and 2-0 scorelines seen in the first five matches of the round. Lucas Viatri opened [...]
As you may be aware, Argentina play Brazil later on Saturday (kick off at 21:30 local time, 01:30
Sunday morning UK time) in a qualifying match for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Brazil don't
need to win but Argentina, if they're going to keep alive realistic hopes of qualifying
automatically, have to.
Argentina travel to Asunción to take on Paraguay later tonight, with the team unlikely to be
announced until very shortly before kick off. Whether Diego Maradona has any idea what it's going
to be himself is anyone's guess. There are some educated guesses to be made, though. There's also
some discussion to be had of [.
The clásico del Sur was a happy one for Banfield, who ran out 2-1 winners away to Lanús. The
goals came from a Paraguayan and a Uruguayan, which could be the Argentine version of some sort of
'Englishman, Irishman, Scotsman' joke. Estudiantes beat Independiente late on, and in the first
half of the final match [.
After a week of recriminations for the selección, Diego Maradona travels to Europe to bang some
heads together and break the news to some players that he'll be picking Argentine-based players
over them in future. All the same, there's some food for thought for him ('thought', Diego: that's
'pensamiento' in castellano, a word you might [.
Well that was a brief road trip. Diego Maradona's and the AFA's protracted falling-out with River
Plate over the state of the Estadio Monumental pitch led to River putting up posters proclaiming
'16 years unbeaten at the Monumental...' in the wake of the 3-1 defeat to Brazil in Rosario last
week. On Tuesday it was [.
It's only the Copa Sudamericana, but San Lorenzo seemed rather pleased at their 1-0 win over Tigre
on Tuesday night, which takes them to the second round on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
Fabián Bordagaray was sent on as a substitute with nine minutes of the ninety remaining, and
scored the winner in [.
This weekend sees the first clásico of the season between members of the 'Big Five', with San
Lorenzo hosting Racing Club on Sunday afternoon as Argentina finally bids farewell to winter.
Saturday sees Tigre visit Gimnasia in a match which should see both sides hopeful of getting some
points on the board, but Friday sees [.
Estudiantes de La Plata joined Rosario Central at the top of the Torneo Apertura standings on
Friday night after the South American champions cruised to victory over still-hapless Huracán and
Central lost their 100% winning record with a 0-0 bore against third-placed Banfield. Estudiantes
beat Huracán 4-1 in Parque Patricios to move level with Central [.
Some news that's breaking as I go to bed on Sunday night: Néstor Gorosito looks certain to resign
as River Plate manager on Monday after his side's 1-0 loss to Arsenal de Sarandí, but now Alfio
Basile could well be joining him in the dole queue after he presented his resignation to Carlos
Bianchi in [.
I've been in Barcelona on holiday since Wednesday, hence the lack of action on HEGS during the past
few days, but before I left I still kept myself busy off-blog by writing a piece for ESPN Soccernet
on the managerial pressures at Argentina's two domestic giants, River Plate and Boca Juniors. If
you'd like to [.
Both Lanus and San Lorenzo began their Copa Sudamericana campaigns proper during the last couple of
days, and they had very contrasting fortunes in their first legs. San Lorenzo battered Peruvian
club Cienciano 3-0 in the Nuevo Gasometro, whilst Lanus found themselves two goals down after six
minutes against Ecuador's LDU Quito, and chasing the [.
Five teams remain unbeaten after the sixth round of matches in the Torneo Apertura, although
amazingly one of them San Lorenzo are down in 8th. Having drawn four, Saturday's five-goal thriller
over Tigre was only their second victory of the campaign. Chacarita finally got a win, whilst the
replay of last season's Clausura [.
When things could not be worse for the Argentine football federation, they did. A group of hackers
calling themselves KKR were able to access the federation's website and place a picture of head
coach Diego Maradona with a Brazilian jersey. Underneath the still they added "a picture is worth a
thousand words.
On Friday night Racing and Gimnasia La Plata shared the points, and Argentinos took three away from
their visit to Newell's in Rosario. Saturday, though, has seen the outstanding result of the
weekend in Argentina: newly-promoted Atlético Tucumán hosted the mighty Boca Juniors and took all
the points with a 2-0 win which lifts them [.
Another 1-0 win for the home side in the second all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana preliminary tie saw
domestic champions Vélez Sársfield progress to the first round proper after a 2-1 aggregate win
over Boca Juniors. Martín Palermo was sent off for the visitors for a violent challenge on
national side left back Emiliano Papa, and Jonathan [.
The executive committee of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed that the Argentine
national team will return to playing at River Plate's Monumental stadium for next month's 2010
World Cup match with Peru.
Sunday sees the clásico de Avellaneda in El Cilindro, as Racing host Independiente with both sides
desperate for a win to get their seasons kick-started. Earlier that same afternoon, we've got the
treat of a replay of the Clausura's final, title-deciding match, although it's unlikely to be as
decisive this time round, given Huracán's form [.
