Never let it be said that Barcelona's scouts are lazy. Not content, in recent years, with
discovering Lionel Messi, Bojan Krkic and Giovani Dos Santos to name but three, the club's newest
signing has just been confirmed - and impressed by Messi, they've gone for another young Argentine.
Mauro Iscardi turns 15 on Tuesday of next [.
To avoid any possible confusion should anyone be typing in terms to search engines looking for
Argentine national team news today, I'll start by pointing out that this has nothing at all to
do with the Olympic Football Tournament. Argentina's senior side (minus Riquelme and Mascherano of
course) take on Belarus in Minsk at 8pm local [.
The squad as expected by the Argentine press (and subsequently here) prior to Diego Maradona's
first press conference as Argentina boss yesterday turned out to be not quite accurate, so here's
the list as announced by the man himself in that press conference, along with a bit of opinion (my
own and others') on it.
In 1994, when Diego Maradona played his last match for Argentina, you could have got very long odds
on him one day becoming the manager of the national side. What about the likelihood that his first
match in charge would take place against the same country he scored his first senior international
goal against?
Sergio Batista named the 15 under-23 players to represent Argentina at the Beijing Olympics on
Tuesday, but what with putting up three other stories last night, I thought I'd leave it until now
to publish the list. One of those players, River Plate forward Marco Rubén, has now become
Villarreal forward Marco Rubén, in what [.
After a couple of months kicking heels and whiling away the time with friendlies, transfer rumours
and one or two actual moves, the wait is over. New boys San Martín de Tucumán will kick
off the Primera División A Torneo Apertura 2008 later today when they host Huracán. You
can follow the whole of the [.
A capacity crowd at Giants Stadium in New York were treated to an utterly boring scoreless draw
between the United States and Argentina on Sunday night which proved, if nothing else, that
there's only so much managers can learn from friendlies. Argentina didn't look interested in spite
of playing for fifteen of the last twenty minutes [.
With just a few days remaining before the 2008 Torneo Clausura begins, some of the sides are still
going over their options when it comes to the formations and personnel for their opening matches.
No such trouble for Argentina's Olympic manager Sergio Batista, who already seems to know his
starting XI for Wednesday's match against Guatemala [.
Argentina's friendly in Cairo has just kicked off and whilst I can't help you with any updates, I
can give you the team. Julio Cruz gets the nod over Fernando Cavenaghi for the starting berth in
the number 9 shirt, whilst Lucho González is the captain. Read on for the formation... Argentina
starting XI vs.
Diego Maradona's first match in charge of Argentina saw few surprises. Against improving and
tenacious opponents, a big win was never on the cards, but those who've doubted the wisdom of
Maradona's appointment can take some encouragement from a performance in which the Albiceleste
actually played like a team.
Boca Juniors take on Fluminense in the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semi-final on Wednesday
night, needing to win or get an extremely high-scoring draw in the Maracanã (the first leg was
2-2). Much later - a midnight kick off Argentine time - the selección will be renewing their
rivalry with Mexico in San [.
The AFA will hold their press conference in a few hours' time to allow Diego Armando Maradona to
announce his first Argentina squad (read on to see who's made it), and already there's controversy
surrounding the nature of the appointment (not to mention the exclusions of three key players).
Maradona declared on Radio La Red [.
In a dire match in Mar del Plata, Independiente and San Lorenzo drew 1-1 in the Torneo de Verano.
Once again, it was a match which saw a mix of first-teamers and reserves, with Pedro Troglio
sending out a more or less full-strength Rojo side and Ramón Díaz preferring to experiment with
kids and substitutes [.
The final squad for Argentina's defence of their gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Football
Tournament has been announced by Under 23 coach Sergio Batista. Following Bayern München's
refusal to allow Martín Demichelis to join the squad, and Real Madrid doing likewise with
Gonzalo Higuaín, the side looks slightly different to that originally named [.
In a couple of hours' time, Argentina will be going for a second gold medal of the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games when the men's football team take on Nigeria, their conquerors in Atlanta 1996, in
the OFT final. Argentina are seeking to defend their title, having demolished arch-rivals Brazil
3-0 in the semi, with Liverpool [.
Happy new year, everyone. The year may only be two days old, but already 2008 is well underway in
the Argentine footballing world. One basic but important thing to mention first: new president
Cristina Kirchner's decision to bring a daylight savings system back to Argentina means the country
is now only two hours behind Greenwich [.
Andrés D'Alessandro has already expressed an eagerness to return home to Buenos Aires for a
six-month loan spell, in order to keep match-fit and playing first-team football, since he's not
being considered regularly for the starting lineup at Real Zaragoza. His former club River Plate
were his preferred destination, but Ramón Díaz, who was in [.
A quick mention here of the latest developments in the trial over the murder of Gonzalo Acro last
August. On Wednesday, Pablo 'Cucaracha' Girón was caught by police after 219 days on the run.
Luis Rodríguez, the judge presiding over the case, considers Girón to be one of the five
men directly responsible for Acro's [.
Argentina advanced to the semi-finals of the Olympic Football Tournament in China on Saturday,
after beating the Netherlands 2-1 after extra time in Shanghai. Barcelona star Lionel Messi was the
key man for an Argentine side who found it hard, at times, to get out of first gear, but who still
created more good chances [.
The goals from Wednesday night's World Cup qualifying draw between Peru and Argentina in El
Monumental de Lima are online now - read on to watch them. Peru 1 - 1 Argentina, World Cup 2010
qualifying
Estudiantes de La Plata were for the most part the better side away to Argentinos
Juniors in the first leg of the all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana semi-final on Thursday night.
At half time they led 1-0 thanks to an unlucky own goal from Argentinos
'keeper Sebastián Torrico, but in the second half Juan Ignacio Mercier got an equaliser
for the hosts to [.
Sergio Batista, the manager of the Under 20 national side, named his squad on Wednesday for the
Under 20 South American championships to be held in Venezuela in January 2009. The championships
will double up as qualifiers for the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt, at which of course Argentina will
be the defending champions.
It should have been a great day, both for Diego Maradona and for the city of Naples. The city's
favourite adopted son had been set to open a museum about his career, which had already toured
through Argentina, Germany and Italy, but disaster struck at the last minute as it was revealed
that thieves had [.
Eagle-eyed perusers of the page tabs along the top of the site will have noticed the addition on
Thursday night of our new map. This has been put together by Bill at Bill's Sports Maps, and he's
very kindly allowed me to include it here as well because we collaborated with some of the
statistics [...
With the completion of the two-match 'tour' of the United States on Sunday, the Argentina squad returned to Buenos Aires to begin preparations for the next round of South American qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. On Sunday, Argentina will host Ecuador in El Monumental, before travelling to take on Brazil in Belo Horizonte [.
After finally ending a run of six matches without defeat in a 2-1 win over Uruguay on Saturday,
Argentina followed it up on Wednesday night by losing to trans-Andean neighbours Chile for the
first time ever in a competitive match. It was a win Marcelo Bielsa's team thoroughly deserved, and
followed on from Paraguay's one-goal [.
Yes, him. As everyone will now surely be aware, Diego Armando Maradona has been named as the new
manager of the senior Argentine national football team. For those few who've not heard of him:
Maradona is a deeply unsuccessful manager who has been in charge of Deportivo Mandiyú (today
reformed as Textil Mandiyú) and Racing [.
The Argentine Olympic football squad had their first preperatory friendly under Sergio Batista's
stewardship in the early hours (Argentine time) of Thursday morning, and easily beat Guatemala by
five goals to nil. Accepting that their rivals will hardly be challenging for the title themselves,
Batista none the less declared himself 'very pleased with the attitude' [.
Following the experimentation of the North American friendlies last week, it was back to serious
business for the selección on Sunday night, with a World Cup qualifier against Ecuador which
was expected to be a mere warm up for the midweek clash away to Brazil. It proved a little trickier
than that, though, with Argentina's [.
The full fixture list for the Primera División A Torneo Apertura 2008 has been released.
Thanks to Seba for posting the fixtures when they were first announced in a comment last
night. Read on for the 'HEGS-approved' official list, with all the clásicos highlighted.
Except the single midweek date, which is noted, all these dates refer to [.
As if to prove that he can put together quite a handy team without including the Olympic-bound
Lionel Messi, Juan Román Riquelme, Sergio Agüero et al, Alfio Basile has named the
Argentina squad to face Belarus in a friendly in Minsk, two weeks from today (Weds). There are a
couple of surprises in the all-Europe [.
AEK have signed Argentinian Midfielder Augustin Pelletieri from Argentine football club Lanus.
SportinGreece.com has an article here
Lionel Messi made a return to the starting lineup for Barcelona; Internazionale stumbled at the top
of Serie; Carlos Tevez helped take Manchester United through to the 6th round of the FA Cup, whilst
Javier Mascherano did likewise for Liverpool, where he may soon be joined by Pablo Aimar. Lionel
Scaloni, meanwhile, has already moved to [.
Two matches have been postponed on Saturday in the Primera A, after a Vélez Sársfield fan was
killed whilst walking to San Lorenzo's stadium to watch his team - the league leaders - take on
Ramón Díaz's side. Emanuel Alvarez, 21 years old, was taken to hospital but declared dead on
arrival. Alvarez was killed by [.
Mauro Martín, the current capo of Boca Juniors' barra brava, La Doce, was sentenced on Tuesday
to twenty days in jail for his part in a fight between his own barra and that of Vélez
Sársfield during Boca's 3-2 away win over the Liniers side on the 23rd April 2006.
Martín's full sentence includes twenty days in [.
Alfio Basile has named Argentina's starting lineup for the World Cup qualifier against Brazil in
Belo Horizonte, and it includes both Juan Román Riquelme and Lionel Messi. Sensibly, Messi
will partner Julio Cruz rather than form part of the little-and-little combo which featured against
Ecuador on Sunday, as Sergio Agüero drops to the bench.
The Argentina squad for the 2010 World Cup Qualifiers against Paraguay in Buenos Aires, and Peru in
Lima, has been almost finalised prior to the weekend's domestic action in Argentina, after which
three Boca Juniors players will be added to the list. Alfio Basile has called up Getafe defender
Daniel Díaz to replace Nicolás Burdisso, [.
Esteban Cambiasso had the goal and, without actually impressing anyone, Argentina were putting to
bed the run of six matches without a win that's seen them slip from first to fourth in the South
American qualification table for South Africa 2010. A poor performance but the result was still as
expected.
It wasn't the best of mornings for Independiente's star striker Germán Denis. The leading
goalscorer of the Apertura was jogging in a Mar Del Plata park with his team-mates, warming up for
an open training session on the side's first day in the city, when he felt a most unwelcome
sensation in his shorts.
The highlight of Boca vs. San Lorenzo on Saturday night was a classic from the scrapbook: a free
kick taken from a collection of Juan Román Riquelme's finest, on the day the world's finest
playmaker returned to his boyhood club. One small difference, though: it was Claudio Morel
Rodríguez, not Riquelme, who placed the ball [.
