Alfio Basile has named his squad for Argentina's opening two World Cup 2010 qualifiers, at home to
Chile and away to Venezuela on the 13th and 16th of October. Juan Román Riquelme, despite being
stuck in limbo after failing to find his way to another club before the European transfer window
closed, is included, and [...]
Argentina's dream of winning a first Under 17 World Cup will have to wait another two years, after
they fell to Nigeria by 2-0 on Saturday in Cheonan. Argentina started the stronger but Nigeria took
the lead through a penalty in the 33rd minute after Lukman Haruna was felled in the box by Fernando
Meza, [...]
The video of all the goals from the ninth round of the 2007 Torneo Apertura is online now, and can
be found here thanks to TN. As usual, read on for the full running order of that video, and my
personal favourite strikes from the weekend (dominated this week by Señores Denis and Belluschi),
courtesy [...]
...it was safe to read about Argentine footballers being transferred, you're proved wrong. Juan
Román Riquelme and his agent claimed a few days ago that they'd reached an agreement with
Atlético Madrid, but that now appears to have been a load of rubbish because no-one's yet signed
the playmaker, the transfer window has closed, and [...]
I should admit something before I begin: I'd already had a couple of cocktails when in Messi's
honour, I decided to end the evenining with a fernet with Coke (very popular in Argentina, you
see) about half an hour before coming back to my hostel to write this, so how coherent the
following will be, I'm not [...]
Former Boca Juniors goalkeeper Gustavo Eberto died of leukaemia on Monday, aged 24. Eberto, a South
American Under 20 champion in 2003, who was viewed as one of Argentina's great goalkeeping hopes
for the future, had been battling testicular cancer since February.
The long-awaited clash in Melbourne between Australia and Argentina finally arrived on Tuesday,
and it was the visitors who emerged victorious from a well-fought match, by a narrow margin but
having put in a performance that both the squad and the press back home were more than pleased
with.
Following Sunday's clásico between Racing and River, some of the visiting barra bravas attacked
some coaches on which ordinary Racing fans were travelling, injuring four. The two sets of fans
were travelling on the Perito Moreno motorway from the partidos of Merlo and Hurlingham, in the
west of Gran Buenos Aires, to the match in Racing's El [...]
There have been injuries left, right and centre in Argentine football in the last 24 hours. Both
the selección and leading club sides have been hit, as have Boca by the death of Gustavo Eberto
and the news that Juan Román Riquelme won't be arriving from Villarreal this year.
The eighth round of the Torneo Apertura is to be played in midweek, on Tuesday and Wednesday of
this week. Central host fellow strugglers Gimnasia de Jujuy, leaders Independiente are at home to
Huracán - who were unbeaten two matches ago but have now lost twice on the trot - and
second-placed Boca host second-bottom [...]
The most infamous piece of cheating and the most famous piece of individual footballing genius in
footballing history came of age this summer - it's now 21 years and a couple of months since Diego
Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal, coupled with that extraordinary slalom through half of England,
dumped England out of the 1986 [...]
Another round is over, and we've seen the last undefeated record in the top flight (Huracán's)
fall, other promoted sides claim important points and a clásico that finished all square and left
no-one really satisfied. Notable results in the lower divisions were Aldosivi's demolition job
against Independiente Rivadavia and Talleres' win over Instituto in this [.
The goals from last night's Copa Sudamericana second round second leg between Estudiantes and
Lanús are now online, and you'll find them right here. Estudiantes took a 2-0 lead in the first
half, but Lanús pegged them back in the second to go through 3-2 on aggregate.
Arsenal did this the hard way. Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, they were required to go to the
Nuevo Gasometro and get the right result to send them through to the first round proper of the Copa
Sudamericana. No side had beaten San Lorenzo at home since Ramón Díaz took charge.
The goals from last night's Copa Sudamericana match between San Lorenzo and Arsenal in the Nuevo
Gasometro are online now, but I've been unable to find any embeddable Daily Motion or YouTube vids
of them, so you'll just have to click here to see them through TN.
Boca nearly went out on top on Sunday, looking like they were about to grab a draw in Santa Fé,
but the Elephants' Graveyard struck again and Colón won thanks to a late strike from Freddy
Grisales. Arsenal spanked San Lorenzo in the Nuevo Gasometro for the second time in five days,
Banfield came out on [...]
Let's get the messy stuff out of the way first: Argentina's women's side became the unwitting
victims of a new record on Monday, as they were demolished 11-0 by Germany in their first match of
the Women's World Cup in China. Germany are seeking to defend their title and started in imposing
fashion with the [...]
Boca returned to the top on Wednesday with an easy win at home against Olimpo. The previous day,
Tigre and Independiente had kept the pressure on them, going top one after the other by,
respectively, drawing with Newell's and beating Huracán. River played magnificently on Sunday, so
naturally were back to being rubbish on Wednesday, [...]
Hold the front pages - Ramón Díaz has said something that, in a certain light, could appear to
suggest that Ramón Díaz made a bit of a hash of things. He's not the only manager in today's
papers, though - Boca boss Miguel Angel Russo has been shooting his mouth off about his club's huge
[...]
Germán Denis is at it again. Independiente travelled to Santa Fé to take on Colón on Saturday
and ran out 3-1 winners to take the outright leadership of the Apertura table (Boca, three points
behind, play on Sunday). Colón were coming off the back of three straight triumphs, one of which
was against Boca in [...]
There have been two changes to this weekend's schedule, for security reasons. River Plate's visit
to Tigre has been brought forward from the time published here yesterday, and will now be played at
11am on Sunday, whilst Arsenal vs. Racing also has a changed kickoff time, and will now started at
18:30 on Sunday.
One-hundred-and-ninety-one years after declaring independence from Spain, Argentina suddenly finds
itself very much directing proceedings - at least as far as some of La Liga's leading clubs are
concerned. After Leo Messi's superb show for Barcelona on Saturday night, both Madrid clubs found
themselves relying on contributions from Argentines.
The goals from round ten of the 2007 Torneo Apertura went online a little while ago, and you can
watch all 32 of them courtesy of TN simply by clicking here. Regular readers know the drill by now
- read on for the full running order of this video, as well as a few of [...]
Arsenal de Sarandí achieved the biggest result in the club's history on Wednesday night, a 1-1
home draw with Brazilian side Goiás seeing them through to the quarter-final of the Copa
Sudamericana in their first ever appearance in South American competition.
Not that I like to think of myself as a prophet in footballing matters, you understand, but I did
mention how much better River Plate have been at home than away from home, didn't I? 2-1 down on
goals and 2-1 up on red cards with a little over quarter of an hour remaining, River [...]
Arsenal ended their three match losing run on Saturday, beating Newell's 1-0 in El Viaducto. José
Ulloa scored the game's only goal in the 24th minute to give the hosts a deserved if uninspiring
victory over Pablo Marini's side, who had made five changes to the team who beat Vélez so well in
midweek. The [...]
Independiente lost their 100% record in midweek to Boca, and on Saturday night it got worse as they
travelled to La Plata and lost 1-0 to Gimnasia. Roberto Salvatierra scored the only goal of the
game four minutes after half-time - the first time this season that Germán Denis has failed to
score. There was [...]
It's that time of week again. Round 7 of the Apertura is upon us, with River vs. Vélez probably
acting as the round's standout fixture, although it'll be interesting to see how Huracán get on
under caretaker managership, as they host Gimnasia. In B Nacional, the theme is very much Mendoza
vs. Córdoba, with Independiente [...]
Olimpo had an unspectacular match against Argentinos in Bahía Blanca, drawing 1-1 and thus failing
to lift themselves away from that second-to-bottom position they occupy in the Apertura table. Now
the only side with less than one point per game in the Promedio table, they'll need to pick things
up if they're to avoid going [...]
The goals from round seven of the 2007 Apertura are now online, all 29 of them, and can be viewed
right here thanks to TN. Read on through this post and as ever you'll find a full running order of
that clip, as well as my personal favourites from the weekend - which, for a [...]
Ricardo La Volpe is probably feeling pretty glad right now that he slept on his immediate feelings
after Sunday's thrashing at the hands of River Plate. The Vélez boss revealed on Thursday that he
came very close, after the 5-0 defeat in the Monumental, to resigning, even communicating his
thoughts to the club's board. In [...]
Primera A sees the clásico rosarino on Sunday as Newell's, without a win in three, host Central,
without a win at all this season, in El Coloso del Parque. Vélez visit Racing and two of the
newly-promoted sides meet as Huracán host San Martín. In B Nacional, Ferro take on Almirante
Brown on Friday. Step this way [...]
Saturday saw one of Argentina's less spoken-about footballing exports reach a major milestone.
Borussia Dortmund ran out 3-0 winners against Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga, and former Instituto
de Córdoba striker Diego Klimowicz got the second - the 33-year-old's 60th goal since he arrived
in the Bundesliga six years ago with Wolfsburg. Real Madrid meanwhile kept up [.
Alfio Basile may be having doubts about how exactly he's meant to replace Hernán Crespo in the
long run, with Diego Milito looking much less impressive during the Copa América than he does for
Real Zaragoza, but those will be eased for now by Valdanito's return to competitive action on
Sunday.
The weekend was doing quite nicely for goals - twenty in nine matches, with four each in El
Monumental and El Cementerio. But apparently, slightly more than two per game simply isn't enough
for Martín Palermo, who sought to prove manager Miguel Angel Russo's pronouncement that his side
feel at home in any stadium correct [...]
Alfio Basile can cheer up a bit. A good few weeks in advance of Argentina's opening World Cup
qualifier against Chile, it's become apparent that Lionel Messi's injury which kept him out of
Barcelona's 0-0 draw away to Osasuna on Sunday really isn't too bad - La Pulga is back training
with the squad now. [...]
Sunday's clásico rosarino saw the fourth managerial casualty of the season in Argentina, under
probably the most worrying circumstances, as Newell's boss Pablo Marini stepped down after threats
from the club's barra brava following the loss to Central. The influence the barras have over
Argentine football generally is clearly too much, but at Newell's it's [.
On Wednesday 19th September, the Copa Sudamericana gets underway. The Sudamericana is South
America's second-tier club competition behind the Copa Libertadores, and is played in the first
half of the (European and Argentine) season. Think of it as broadly equivalent to the UEFA Cup,
with the proviso that some clubs play in both competitions. River [.
There were an amazing twelve red cards and thirty-two goals this weekend, all of which made typing
this entry an absolute pig of a job. Germán Denis grabbed two to take his tally for Independiente
to thirteen in ten matches as his side beat Olimpo. Boca ballsed up at home against Gimnasia de
Jujuy to [...]
The managers at Argentina's two biggest clubs have some complication selection issues going into
this week's Copa Sudamericana return legs. Boca Juniors, who won the first leg of their tie against
Sao Paulo 2-1 but conceded a last minute away goal which will make for very tricky business in
Morumbí on Wednesday night, have seen [...]
