The Asociación del Fútbol Argentino didn't think this one through much, did they? Scheduling a
midweek fixture with mostly European players half-way across the world, I'm sure they got an earful
from Sir Alex Ferguson, Frank Riikjard, and Rafa Benitez among others. Anyhow, the Albicelestes
have already traveled to Oz, so there's little to be done at this point.
I've seen this list posted on a few sites and still can't believe how unbelievably retarded it is.
First of all, what is FourFourTwo's criteria? The opinion of Nike, Adidas, and FIFA? They certainly
didn't take all-round play into account, because Kaka is a second rate defender at best. That's why
they have Gattuso on Milan. There's no doubting the Brazilian's attacking skills, but he's utterly
useless and a borderline burden on the other end.
- Maradona and his 1986 World Cup-winning Argentina teammates have agreed to an unofficial rematch
with the English side that El Diego scored the 'Hand of God' goal against in the quarterfinals of
that competition. Peter Reid, a member of the English squad, had this to say:"This is our chance to
show what we can do and get a little bit of revenge." Sounds kind of sad to me, old men not being
able to let bygones be bygones.
No disrespect to Africa, Asia, and North America, but the two best footballing continents are
easily Europe and South America. The real question is, if you were to take the best players from
those two places, who would win? First, which players to use would need to be decided.
The South America side would be much easier to choose than Europe only because most of the players
would come from either Argentina or Brazil.
- Instead of showing up in court to face charges of driving his car into a phone booth, Diego
Maradona was parting in Colombia with Latin Pop singers Juanes and Carlos Vives. Did I mention this
was the sixth time he failed to appear? If he continues to do so, he could be taken into to custody
if and when he returns to Argentina. The former soccer legend has denied the charges and his
lawyers have been unsuccessfully in requesting that they be dropped.
President of Boca Juniors, Mauricio Macri, rejected Milan's proposal to buy Ever Banega for 14
million dollars. The price offered for one of the best Argentina's young players seemed too low for
Macri.
Have you ever gone to a sore and seen a computer or TV set, what have you, and you knew right away
it was going to be yours. The problems was that you couldn't afford it. You waited and waited for
it to go down in price but several people after you were interested and had the cash, but somehow
it did not leave the sales floor. That is the feeling several bargain hunters have, but none like
Boca Juniors this morning.
Argentinean Hugo Colace, who, as it was told earlier, was sounded by Flamengo, signed a contract
with Brazilian giant till June. Estudiantes' ex-midfielder will be presented to the torcida this
week.
A full force Swiss squad featuring Alexander Frei and Tranquillo Barnetta will be in Vienna
tomorrow evening to welcome the La Roja of Chile to their UEFA 5-star rated Ernst Happel Stadium.
The Chileans will feature former Juventus player and all-time top goalscorer, Marcelo Salas, who
hasn't played for his country for over two years. From the looks of their roster, it looks like
he's going to need to score a couple of more if they are to have a shot at making this a decent
match because the rest of the squad has a combined total of 21 career international goals, 14 less
than Salas.
Last summer in the men's World Cup, Germany v. Argentina was one of the best games of the
tournament. Not so much with the women's version. This was a blowout. A score you'd usually
associate more with, say, Germany v. San Marino. The Germans were helped by some terrible
goalkeeping by Vanina Correa, who put the ball in her own net twice, as well as some equally
atrocious defending by Argentina; the back line might as well have not even been there for all the
good they were.
The chiefs of River Plate were so impressed with the bright start in their team of young Chilean
Alexis Sanchez, that they are doing their best now to keep him at least till 2009. Sanchez is still
only 18.
Boca Juniors - Huracán 1:0
Ledesma (pen.)
Despite a loss on Bombonera, Huracan looked solid. The penalty was questionable enough for
Huracan's coach Mohamed to be sent off for protesting against it. Boca has gone the riquelmeless
period in the best possible manner having collected virtually the maximum of points. With Riquelme
they are about only to improve.
GERMANY
Nickname: Die Nationalelf (nothing to do with Legolas; it means "the national
XI")
Current world ranking: 2
Coach: Silvia Neid, who took over in 2005, having previously led the U-19 side to
the title at the world championships in 2004. She was also a member of the German side that lost in
the final in 1995.
This is the list of 21 players who have been called up for the friendly against Australia, to be
played in Melbourne (in the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground) on the 11th of September:
Goalkeepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe, Spain), Oscar Ustari (Getafe), Sergio Romero (AZ
Alkmaar, the Netherlands)
Fair enough, given the situation with Carrizo (which I'll touch on below).
With Dutchman Dick Advocaat seemingly rubberstamped as the next boss of the Australian national
team, caretaker coach Graham Arnold has departed by biting back at critics who accuse him of
steering the Socceroos ship off course since the highs of last year's World Cup.
It's been a tumultuous journey for Arnold, Guus Hiddink's former assistant, since accepting the
national team senior position when Hiddink elected not to renew his short-term contract 15 months
ago.
Racing's keeper Hilario Navarro, who played outstandingly against River Plate, is waiting for an
invitation from Alfio Basile. The keeper spent most of his career in Paraguayan clubs, but was born
in Argentinean Corrientes and asks the chiefs of Argetninean football not to forget about this.
Argentinos Juniors experienced an unexpected resign of their coach, Ricardo Carruso Lombardi,
despite team's great start in Apertura. The new coach is famous Nestor Gorosito. The story of
Carruso Lombardi's sacking becomes even more vague in light of the recent incident in one of road
cafes, where he had been beaten by two strangers.
Another Argentinean club saw its coach resign this week. Antonio Mohamed left the post of Huracan's
coach due to misunderstanding with the clubs's president, famous Carlos Babington. Babington wants
to offer the post now to ex-jugador of Velez Sarsfield Fabian Carrizo, while 400 hinchas of El
Globo surrounded the Huracan's office demanding to get Mohamed back.
The most notable result from this round of games was England holding Germany to a scoreless draw.
It was a thoroughly disciplined performance by England, as the defence stifled the German attack
while Kelly Smith, leading the line on her own, harried them at the other end. England allowed
Germany very few clear chances at goal, and keeper Rachel Brown was equal to those they did have,
including an excellent save late in the game.
The first two-thirds of the fixture list for this weekend passed without too much to write home
about, San Lorenzo picking up an easy win away to Central, Independiente brushing Olimpo aside with
ease and only Argentinos Juniors' 4-0 tonking of Newell's raising any real eyebrows - and even then
with the proviso that the [...]

Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, who has been sacked as a coach of Argentinos Juniors, has replaced Pablo
Marini on the position of a chief coach of Newell's Old Boys. Before Argentinos Caruso Lombardi
coached mainly small clubs like Temperley, Sportivo Italiano, Estudiantes de Caseros, Platense, El
Porvenir, All Boys and Tigre.
Alfio Basile announced a list of players who will take part in first qualification matches for
Mundial 2010 against Chile and Venezuela:
Keepers: Roberto Abbondanzieri (Getafe), Oscar Ustari (Getafe).
Defensemen: Daniel Díaz (Getafe), Gabriel Heinze (Real Madrid), Gabriel Milito (Barcelona), Javier
Zanetti (Inter), Fabricio Coloccini (Deportivo), Martín Demichelis (Bayern), Nicolás Burdisso
(Inter).
Only the following pairs are more or less predictable:
Banfield - Rosario Central
Central's players went on strike for being not paid with their salaries. Under such circumstances,
as a rule, people don't play well.
Olimpo - Argentinos Juniors
Argentinos have changes a coach for unknowm reasons, that may result in worsening of their output.
One of two famous "mellizos" Barros Schelotto, Gustavo, announced his retirement. A very talented
playmaker, who, nevertheless, has always been outshadowed by his twin brother Guillermo, played for
Gimnasia de La Plata, Boca Juniors, Union, Racing, Rosario Central, Villareal, Alianza Lima and
Islanders (Puerto Rico).
Famous Osvaldo Ardiles has become a new coach of Huracan. The coaching career of world champion in
1978 impresses: Swindon Town, Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion, Tootenham Hotspurs, Chivas
Guadalajara, Shimizu S-Pulse, Croacia Zagreb, Yokohama Marinos, Al-Ittihad, Racing, Tokyo Verdy,
Beitar Jerusalem, Beimak.
Gimnasia de Jujuy - Argentinos Juniors 1:1
Héctor Silva - Álvaro Pereira
Colon - Independiente 1:3
Guillermo Rodríguez (o.g.) - Carlos Matheu, German Denis (2)
German Denis is a leading scorer with 11 goals in 9 matches.

Leandro Benítez - Leonardo Ulloa
Huracan - San Martin 2:1

The emigration of Argentinean, Brazilian and Uruguayan players to Europe has become unprecedently
active in last years. The talented players leave their homeland sometimes having not actually
played in national leagues and hence having not gained their valuable experience. The wisest from
this point of view seem to be those who managed to avoid the temptation and stay in South America
at least till their 23-24 years.
The 20-year-old Argentine slots home the goal after being set-up by his Spanish teammate in
Barça's 3-0 win over Lyon.
