And I'd better get this in too while the rage is still hot: I want to also go on the record and say
CONCACAF has no real impetus to provide a competition that MLS fans will take seriously. Referee
reform is a tricky thing as it is, and you need real proof of bent refs of the like we saw
yesterday during Toronto FC vs.
The line-up for the quarter-final stages of the CONCACAF Champions League is one step closer to
being completed after three teams sealed their qualification on Matchday 5. Stoppage Time
International Football Blog reviews the latest developments.
Both of the qualifiers from Group A were decided on Tuesday night and it was no surprise to see
last season's finalists Cruz Azul and MLS champions Real Salt Lake clinch their berths for the next
round.
-----------------------------18 looks confusedBuenos dios to the Group Stage of CONCACAF Champions League El Toronto! For the first time in
Los Reds history they will play in the CCL proper and with it travel the continent (and its little
dangly bit below) in the quest to bring a Quarterfinal to Toronto.
MLS COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT
The current deal expired on Jan 31, 2010, but the two sides agreed to originally extend it until
Feb 12, and a further 13 days to Feb 25. And now that Feb 25 has come and gone with no new deal
being finished, we enter the Twilight Zone, with the players vowing to strike if a new contract is
not agreed to by opening day - Thu Mar 25.
Translation: "Possible CCL quarterfinal in February... in Toronto?!"
No matter what Toronto FC does for the rest of the MLS season and no matter how well they do in
the CONCACAF Champions League, club owners, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, will deem 2010 a
wild success. Silverware is of little value to the Bay Street Bankers but 3 more guaranteed home
dates sure is!

In case you haven't heard, TFC bit the big one last night and lost 1-0 to Arabe Unido in one of
the crummiest matches I've seen them play. What a change from last week against Cruz Azul. The
Toronto lineup was lacklustre (I don't know if the rumoured feuding with Preki kept Mista off the
field), the refs were ridiculous (2 phantom red cards), and Unido were beatable.
Santos got a late goal to beat Columbus last night. (CONCACAF)
Don't color me surprised, more like disappointed this morning. Both Toronto FC and the Columbus
Crew went on the road last night in the CONCACAF Champions League and each came away empty handed
for one reason or another. Both couldn't put away chances and each were hit with plenty
questionable calls that ended with MLS fans having the same reaction, when will it end?

The highlights don't show it, but Arabe Unido might have become your most hated team if you
watched the full match. The Panama based club featured flopping and diving players like I've never
seen before. Questionable red cards for MLS clubs highlight this game as well.

Last night's game had everything that TFC's entire season had, except that it ended positively.
Maybe I'm a sucker for all the positive stuff that has happened this week, the Tueseday academy win
over Arabe Unido, the personal nature of the town hall meetings and the victory against DC, but I
feel that the my faith is restored in the club.

With not so much news on Arsenal's Carlos Vela on the line, we will inform you also about
Carlitos's brother Alejandro, who is playing currently for Deportivo Cruz Azul in the Mexican

Pride of Tegucigalpa... and no muppets
You can file this one under "careful what you wish for". Today, somewhere in the dark recesses
of whatever secret New York City lair CONCACAF headquarters is hidden, names (most of them very
Latino) were picked out of a giant sombrero (probably). Si!
I realize the competition is only two years old, but here's the best finish by country.

As part of their preparation for the 2010/11 CONCACAF Champions League, Real Salt Lake will welcome
Costa Rican club Puntarenas FC to Sandy, Utah, on Saturday, June 19th, for an international
friendly, the team announced on Wednesday. The defending MLS Cup champions are 6-4-3 all-time
against international opponents, but lost their only game against Costa Rican opposition back on
July 23, 2008, dropping a 2-1 result to Deportivo Saprissa.
Sorry. They're actually going to face Real Salt Lake from the MLS, Arabe Unido from Panama, and
Cruz Azul from Mexico. But hey, this tournament is supposed to be for the best teams in CONCACAF,
so its great news that Toronto FC will be making its debut.
TFC had a tough week leading up to the game, including losing their luggage on the way to
Saturday's game in Kansas City, then proceeding to lose in Kansas City, and then travelling to
Honduras with the flight being diverted a few times before they could finally land.

Back for another week of former Wizards updates. The USL division 2 playoffs start this weekend,
and all 5 former Wizards playing in the league made the playoffs this year. In other former Wizards
news, Carlos Marinelli is once again looking for a club after being released this offseason by
Aldosivi.

Real Salt Lake and Alvaro Saborio needed a penalty call in extra time to defeat the time wasting
Panamanian side 2-1 after Arabe Unido was reduced down to 10 men.
After the LA Galaxy's 4-1 drubbing from Puerto Rico Islanders, many assumed this would be
another year of failure for MLS sides in the CONCACAF Champions League. That no longer appears to
be the case. In three matches, MLS sides have maximum points, a feat never achieved by MLS teams
since the tournament was reorganized in its current format for the 2008-2009 season.
Well I have to say that this was a very good week for MLS sides getting involved with the
CONCACAF Champions League Group Stages. In the first week of competition we saw three of the four
sides earn wins. Unfortunately for the Seattle Sounders they were hit with some bad luck once it
got towards the 45th minute.

The Islanders sour 1-1 draw against Olimpia at home in Juan Ramón Loubriel stadium, combined
with Toluca's sloppy 0-0 draw on the road against CD FAS, left the Islanders tied with Olimpia for
first place (with 1 point and 1 GF) in Group D action. This group was the only one registering
draws in the first week of group action.
Dave looks how we feelARABE UNIDO 1 - TORONTO FC 0David Lee Roth is spinning in his grave. This is not the way "Panama!" was supposed to be. It was
gonna be about doing the splits in mid-air, hitting giant cymbols covered in glitter and being "hot
for teachers" dammit!

Arabe Unido 1 - Toronto 0 Toronto travelled to Panama for their second game in Group A, facing a
team heavily criticized for fouling and delaying play in their opener against Real Salt Lake. This
time, it was Toronto racking up the fouls with 21 to Arabe Unido's 8. Fidel Caeser had already
scored the game's only goal in the 39th minute before Toronto started seeing red cards.
Toronto FC and the Columbus Crew opened their CONCACAF Champions League group stage campaigns
with victories last week, but both will need to find rare wins on the road this week to keep that
pace.
TFC is taking on Arabe Unido tonight (8pm, Fox Soccer Channel) while the Crew look to become the
first MLS team to win a competitive match in Mexico when it takes on Santos Laguna at 10pm (Fox
Soccer Channel).
I couldn't believe what I was watching on Fox Soccer Channel last night. While doing my live
radio Internet show I decided to keep an eye on my TV and see what was happening between Panama's
Arabe Unido & Canada's Toronto FC. Watching the match I was in disbelief as once again Arabe Unido
was flopping all over their home field and the ref just allowed them to get away with murder.
A day after the Columbus Crew became the latest MLS team to fall to Mexican opposition in
Mexico (and fall victim to questionable officiating), Real Salt Lake will look to become the first
team in league history to win an official match on Mexican soil when it faces Cruz Azul tonight
(8pm, Fox Soccer Channel).
Over the last two years I've developed an overwhelming hatred of Panama's Arabe Unido. The strategy
in their 2009-10 home leg against Houston consisted of two-footed tackles and overall hackery. This
year's performance against Real Salt Lake alternated between thuggery and the worst display of "ow
my spleen" time-wasting I've ever seen.
