This season's Champions League has thrown a few names at us that very few people from this side of the continent have heard of. With another night of great European action soon to commence, I've decided to give you a run-through of the teams that'll be looking to announce themselves on the European stage.

The UEFA Champions League began its group stage on Tuesday with many of the favorites in action such as Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich. The draw for the group stage of the 2009-10 UEFA Champions League was held Thursday in Monaco. Last season's finalists face some tough going but they are not alone in that regard. FC Barcelona will begin their trophy defence in Group F with games against FC Internazionale Milano, FC Dynamo Kyiv and FC Rubin Kazan while some long away trips are looming for Manchester United FC who were drawn in a group with CSKA Moscow and Besiktas.

The UEFA Champions League wrapped up its second set of group stage matches on Wednesday with 8 matches. Real Madrid continued to show they are ready to challenge with a 3-0 win over Marseille. Cristiano Ronaldo has taken no time in adjusting to Madrid as he scored two goals. In England, Manchester United came from behind to defeated VfL Wolfsburg 2-1.

A brace from Porto striker Hulk helped Portuguese champions to come back from a shock early goal from APOEL.

Juventus 1-1 Bordeaux -- In a rain-soaked Stadio Olimpico, the French champs earned a point on an offside (but not called) equalizer by Jaroslav Plasil in the 75th minute.
Maccabi Haifa 0-3 Bayern Munich -- Thomas Muller netted a brace (that's four goals now in four games for him) as the German side throttled the sorry Israeli hosts.

Atletico Madrid-Apoel Nicosia

Atletico Madrid was able to grossly out shoot their opponent in this one with 10 shots on target to APOEL's 1. But in the end neither club could score and Atletico Madrdi remains a squad struggling to find the net. Next match will be against FC Porto who just lost to Chelsea, so both clubs need a win in that battle.

Chelsea had their second match of the UEFA Champions League at APOEL as they looked to go 2-0.

Chelsea will look to bounce back from their second loss of their domestic campaign. The Blues lost to Aston Villa at the weekend because of two lapses on set pieces but Ballack says that they are looking to eradicate those mistakes.

"John's (Terry) reaction on the pitch showed that he takes a big responsibility not just for himself but for the team," said Ballack.

Apoel Nicosia vs FC Porto

FC Porto will look to lock up second place in Group D with a win against Nicosia. The 2-1 victory a fortnight ago did not represent the game. Porto out-played the Romanian side for the better part of the game and Hulk should have had a hat-trick at least.

So, with the UEFA Champions League group stages kicking off today, I thought it might be a good idea to have a little fun with it.
With that in mind, it's time to introduce the Fighting Talker UEFA Champions League Prediction Contest. Now, the budget here at FT is still in the developmental stages, so there's not really a prize.

Chelsea's second successive 1-0 victory helps them lead Group D in the Champions League.Boss Carlo Ancelotti is relieved when the Blues won despite their lacklustre performance against the Cypriot champions. Nicolas Anelka 18th minute goal proved decisive.

Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes that Sunday's encounter with championship rivals Chelsea will be "massive" with both clubs harbouring expectations of a Premier League title challenge.
Johnson, a former Chelsea player himself, joined the Reds from Portsmouth this summer and has produced a string of polished performances since his £18.

Oy. Unless your name is Aaron and you are the co-writer of this blog, yesterday was the ugliest day yet in the contest, as the five participants combined for just 57 points - 26 of those coming from Aaron, who nailed two games perfectly.
They say the best thing after a bad performance is to come right back out and try it again, and the Champions League gives us that opportunity on Wednesday with eight more matches from Groups A-D.

After a night of 'upsets' where only 1 out of 8 home teams managed to win their Champions League games (and 5 of them lost), Chelsea fans will be hoping that Wednesday night brings better luck to the home side.

There were plenty of upsets yesterday, could we see more today? On paper Manchester United, who have struggled as of late, could be expected to slip against CSKA after a long trip to Moscow but CSKA has not been performing well either. I am not expecting a feast of football from that match and the real drama lies elsewhere in the schedule.

The UEFA Champions League has complete three rounds of group stage matches or its half-way point. A few teams are very close to clinching a spot to the knockout stage while some clubs have a lot of work to do. Manchester United and Chelsea are both 3-0-0 and a win away from clinching their spots to the next round.

In Denmark there has been a lot of talk today of the match between FC Copenhagen and Apoel Nicosia, where the team from Cyprus won 3-1 and qualified for the Champions League, while the (too) ambitious Danish champions were out. This seemed to be a big surprise for FC Copenhagen, who nevertheless have a strong tradition of underestimating opponents when these come from apparently smaller countries

How fast things change. Ancelotti is learning this first hand after Chelsea's shock defeat to Wigan this past weekend. He is under a obscene amount of pressure because of this loss and while he says he is not feeling it I'm sure a win would do him good.
