You have to feel somewhat sorry for Arsenal. After doing all the hard work and topping their difficult group with a game to spare, they still manage to draw the Italian champions in the last 16 of the competition. Still, the Gunners have a decent record against Milan, knocking them out of the competition in 2008, courtesy of a 2-0 win at the San Siro.

After a long time, Europe's premier competition has thrown up a few surprises and plenty of excitement. At the time of the draw few, if any, would have expected United to bow out. Fewer still would have expected the Gunners to qualify from a tough group before the other three English clubs and with a game to spare.

Following on from the piece on nationalities in European competition I thought I'd take a look at the squad numbers used during the opening week of European football (Europa League and Champions League). All of UEFA's perspex balls of destiny have been drawn from their respective goldfish bowls of fate and, as a result, the groups for the 2011/12 Champions League look like this...

Group A: Bayern Munich, Villarreal, Manchester City, Napoli

Group B: Inter Milan, CSKA Moscow, Lille, Trabzonspor

Group C: Manchester United, Benfica, Basel, Otelul Galati

Group D: Real Madrid, Lyon, Ajax, Dinamo Zagreb

Well, Man City's draw could have been a lot worse with Barcelona, AC Milan and Dortmund being the toughest possible permutation but it's not as though the balls have been especially kind to them Bayern Munich are seasoned heavyweights whereas both Villarreal and Napoli are not to be underestimated.

On Thursday evening in Monaco the Champions League group stage drawing took place and FC Barcelona found out who they would be facing on their quest to be repeat champions.

They find themselves in Group H along with AC Milan, Bate and Plzen.

The UEFA Champions League group stage draw is set for this morning (11:30am, Fox Soccer Channel) and we could be in for some very interesting groups.

With Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund sitting in lower group draw pots, we could find ourselves with some very strong groups, and stand a good chance of seeing at least one and even two groups worth of the Group of Death label.
