Looks like Miguel Calero won't play again this year.
Pachuca president Jesus Martinez said that the club's captain and goalkeeper will be out of action
for six months, which rules him out of the remainder of the Apertura 2007 season, Copa Sudamericana
and the Club World Cup.
It's disappointing that Pachuca won't have the opportunity to defend their titles and try for
another one with their full squad but such is life.
Boca Juniors - Huracán 1:0
Ledesma (pen.)
Despite a loss on Bombonera, Huracan looked solid. The penalty was questionable enough for
Huracan's coach Mohamed to be sent off for protesting against it. Boca has gone the riquelmeless
period in the best possible manner having collected virtually the maximum of points. With Riquelme
they are about only to improve.
Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero was operated successfully on Sunday at the University of Minnesota
Medical Center. Pachuca's skipper had deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood-clot ailment.
Calero is expected to be out for at least two months but might be out quite a bit longer. According
to the report, Calero is likely to remain in Minnesota for the next several days and return to
Pachuca afterward to begin his rehabilitation.
Without Miguel Calero, Pachuca shockingly doesn't seem like their usual selves.
Friday, Pachuca fell to Veracruz by 3-0. It was the third consecutive league match without Calero
and the second straight one they've lost. Friday's affair was particularly distressing. Humberto
Hernandez, a 22-year-old youngster who has done nothing but thrown gas on the fire, was sent off in
the 25th minute as Pachuca played a man down for most of the match.
1. Santos (5-0-1). Only blemish thus far was blowing two-goal lead to tie Atlante this week.
2. Pachuca (4-1-0). No letdown as Tuzos rout San Luis after thrilling SuperLiga finale.
3. Atlante (3-0-3). Win, draw in four-day span; strong results for rising squad.
4. America (3-1-2). Strong victory Sunday doesn't exactly offset midweek loss at Morelia.
1. Santos (6-0-1). Destroyed America 4-0 at home. Yes, this team is for real.
2. Pachuca (5-1-0). Captain is in hospital, club falls behind 1-0 on road, yet Tuzos find a way,
again.
3. Atlante (4-0-3). Down 2-0 after 17 minutes, Atlante fights back for gritty 3-2 win at
Tigres.
4. Toluca (4-2-1). Vicente Sanchez bags brace for Diablos Rojos.

Near the midway point of the Clausura 2007 season, Santos was the worst team in Mexico and on the
verge of relegation.
Now, the club is the best team in Mexico hands down. Sure, the playoffs are far away and a lot can
change from now to then, but for Santos to even be anywhere near the top of the heap, let alone the
superlider, speaks well of the organization.
Before the start of the Mexican season, I thought about who could win the championship. I ruled out
Pachuca simply because no team but one has repeated since Mexico started playing its two seasons a
year in 1996. Chivas and America both had big losses and didn't really do a whole lot to fill
holes. Cruz Azul... no way. Toluca lost their coach and I figured it would take Jose Pekerman one
season to adjust to coaching in Mexico.
Letdown is apparently not in Pachuca's vocabulary.
Three days after beating the L.A. Galaxy in a thrilling and exhausting SuperLiga final, Pachuca
returned home and whipped San Luis 4-1.
Thus far, San Luis has been pretty solid in the Mexican league, having gone 3-1-1 before losing to
los Tuzos.
Pachuca was actually down 1-0 at halftime but the champs came out and dropped four goals in the
second half.
Only the following pairs are more or less predictable:
Banfield - Rosario Central
Central's players went on strike for being not paid with their salaries. Under such circumstances,
as a rule, people don't play well.
Olimpo - Argentinos Juniors
Argentinos have changes a coach for unknowm reasons, that may result in worsening of their output.
I gave Tigres my kiss of death when I picked them to win the Apertura 2007 season. So far, so good
as Tigres is off to a flying 1-5-1 start.
Still, coach Americo Gallego is apparently on solid ground. Tigres vice president Sebastian Luri
told mediotiempo.com that Gallego's job is safe.
Said Luri: "We believe in the coach and in this project.

Jose Mourinho isn't the only coach whose club didn't exactly try and talk him into staying.
Mexican side Atlas essentially sacked boss Ruben Omar Romano. The Argentine said he would walk away
after this weekend's match against Jaguares but Atlas officials responded with a "Why wait?" decree
and told him to walk.
Maybe it's their cool red-and-black uniforms, but Atlas is the perennial tease.
