As we reported yesterday, Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta collapsed during a Primera Liga match
on Saturday. Today brought the sad news that Puerta has died, just three days later. He had
suffered a heart attack and had been on life support since Saturday. What makes this even sadder is
that Puerta was going to become a father for the first time in about six weeks' time.
I don't watch a lot of Spain's La Liga, but on Saturday I picked a fateful match to watch, Sevilla
v. Getafe. I saw Antonio Puerta go down and his teammates rush to his side. It was a surreal
experience. I don't know very much about Sevilla or Antonio Puerta, but I was very sad to hear the
news of his death today. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.
As The Gaffer already mentioned Sevilla kicked off their season on Saturday with a 4-1 win over
Getafe. While I had been looking forward to the Madrid derby, I decided to watch the Sevilla-Getafe
match and was not disappoined at all. The game had plenty of excitement, flair and talking points.
In the first half alone there was enough action and drama for an entire match.

With my Sevilla scarf proudly wrapped around my neck on Saturday, I watched one of the scariest
things I have seen in my football career. During the Sevilla-Getafe match, Sevilla fullback Antonio
Puerta collapsed on the field after running back to defend a Getafe counter attack. When Puerta hit
the ground, he was unconscious and [...]
Some People Are On The Pitch were saddened to hear of the death of Sevilla midfielder Antonio
Puerta yesterday.
Puerta, who made his debut for the Spanish national team last October, suffered a heart attack

Puerta collapsed again in the changing room after the match.
Antonio Puerta, one of the most talented Spanish footbll players, one of few who played in genuine
Latinoamerican sytle, has passed away in a hospital three days after his heart stopped during the

The first Jornada of La Liga is behind us, and it was a weekend filled with some great football,
but seemingly overshadowed by the current situation with Puerta in Sevilla. Real Madrid and
Atletico Madrid was not televised anywhere as the cable rights war is still going on between
Audiovisual and Mediapro in Spain. Real [...]
Three days after his first collapse on the field of the Getafe vs. Sevilla match - the 22-year old
Spanish winger passed away. He was due to become a father in less than 2 months. This is beyond
tragic and to watch the whole thing unfold on television is unreal. I had never been so speechless
and emotional during a match than when I saw Puerta go down.
This is shocking news and terrible for the game, UEFA have postponed Tuesday night's Champions
League qualifier between AEK Athens and Sevilla after the death on Tuesday of the Spanish club's
defender Antonio Puerta. The 22-year-old Spain international collapsed on the pitch during the
weekend game against Getafe and, though he was able to walk off, suffered a relapse in the dressing
room and required cardiac resuscitation.
Phew. What a week. So much going on everywhere, particularly here in dear old England. Lots to take
in and much that's no doubt passed some of us by. Let's take a look back at an event-filled week of
football that had plenty to catch the eye...
Carling Cup gathers momentum
The second round of the Carling Cup (that's the League Cup for older visitors) took place on
Tuesday and Wednesday and it's the stage of the competition where most of the Premier League teams
enter the field of battle - often with disastrous consequences.
The NY Times takes an in-depth look into the death of Antonio Puerta and also examines two other
collapses that occurred yesterday and in the past:
Late yesterday another player — the Zambian striker Chaswe Nsofwa,
27, who plays for Hapoel Beersheva in Israel — collapsed during a scrimmage.
