As derbies go, it's one of the most passionate and dramatic in Europe, however, in recent years,
it has also been one of the most one-sided. Despite going close on a number of occasions, Atletico
Madrid have not beaten their arch-rivals Real Madrid for over a decade back in the days when Jimmy
Flloyd Hasselbaink was plying his trade by the Manzanares.
The Mirror reports that Liverpool are on track to wrap up the signing of Maxi Rodriguez from
Atletico Madrid by Thursday.
The Argentine wide-man's future at the Vicente Calderon has been a source of speculation since
Antonio Lopez succeeded him as club captain last year.
The former Espanyol star has made nine league starts this season out of a possible 16, and it is
understood that he is eager to move elsewhere in order to push his claim for a spot at the World
Cup.
Barcelona 1 - 1 Villarreal
(1-0) 7' Pedro, (1-1) 50' Fuster
Whoever wrote the Camp Nou script for Barcelonas celebration of their six trophy
bonanza, a draw with Villarreal surely wasn't part of it. That man
Pedro got the hosts off to the perfect start after Thierry Henry
had slammed a first time shot onto the bar, and he chested down to fire emphatically past Diego
Lopez.
It promised goals and it didn't disappoint. Pure entertainment from the two Spanish teams left in
the Europa League, as
Atletico Madrid and Valencia treated us to a feast of
football in the Mestalla. The first half ended goalless after 45 minutes of end-to-end football,
with
Simao coming closest to breaking the stalemate with a curler which struck
Cesars post, whilst David Villa had a goal ruled out for offside.
Virtuoso performances from David Villa and Sergio Agüero ensured the Spanish contigent of
Atletico Madrid and Valencia passed through to the quarter-finals of the Europa
League. On a night full of goals,
Sergio Agüero provided two of his own, as his
one-man show in the first half was enough to push Atlético over the line.
Atletico Madrid captain Antonio Lopez believes Fernando Torres will receive a rapturous welcome at
the Vicente Calderon when los Colchoneros host Liverpool in the Europa League semi-finals in just
under two weeks' time.
"It will be a very special game for Fernando Torres," Lopez told the club's official website.
Tonight, 24 years later,
Atletico Madrid will once again fight for their second
European title as they take on Roy Hodgsons
Fulham in Hamburg. Some posers as we
preview the match: Will we see the same Perea that lead the defensive line so admirably against
Liverpool?
Atletico Madrid 2 - 1 Fulham(1-0) 31' Forlan, (1-1) 38' Davies, (2-1) 116'
Forlan
Atletico Madrid ended 48 years of hurt to land the
Europa League
in Hamburg, defeating English side Fulham 2-1.
Diego Forlan was the two goal hero,
striking the first of the match after 30 minutes and leaving it late to grab the winner, four
minutes from the end of extra time.
Diego Capel lashes a shot past David De Gea after the ball rebounds back to him in the 4' minute
and then in the 90' minute, Jesus Navas steals the ball and runs towards goal as Antonio Lopez
fails in his attempt to tackle him. De Gea is beaten on Navas's sidestep, and Lopez, by now back in
goal tries a futile attempt to keep the ball out but it is too late.
