FA Make An Example Of United… Again

Republik Of Mancunia 12 November @ 10:38 AM EST

Sir Alex Ferguson has been handed a four match touchline ban as well as a £20,000 for questioning the fitness of referee Alan Wiley.

After spending an unusually long time to book Anton Ferdinand in the second half, Ferguson claimed this was because Wiley needed a chance to get his breath back.

Aaron Hunt for England? He Says Nein, Danke.

England World Cup Blog 02 November @ 04:48 PM EST

Interesting story in Bild recently, suggesting that Fabio Capello has been asking Stuart Pearce to keep an eye on Werder Bremen's 23 year old attacking mid/forward Aaron Hunt, who you can see above scoring twice for Werder Bremen (in white) this weekend. The second goal (which tied the game at 2-2) is an absolute cracker of a chest-volley combo.

Martinez Didn’t Join Fergie Bashing After All

Republik Of Mancunia 28 October @ 09:06 AM EST

Sir Alex Ferguson was charged by the FA for claiming that visibly overweight referee Alan Wiley wasn't fit enough. After Wiley took an unusually large amount of time to book Anton Ferdinand in the second half, our manager accused Wiley of needing this time to take a rest.

Ferguson apologised personally to Wiley but was asked by the FA to explain himself before they charged him.

Premier League catches up with “big four”

EPL Talk 26 October @ 10:02 AM EST

Just two months into the 2009-2010 season, the "big four" of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have lost 10 matches combined. Compare that with 18 matches lost by the league's elite combined in the entirety of last season, and it's clear that either the big four are weaker, or the rest of the league is getting stronger.

Hot Air Clouds Black Cats’ Progress

Premiership Talk Blog 20 October @ 11:33 AM EST

Just as the referees' apparent lack of fitness stole the headlines in the aftermath of Sunderland's last game, their latest encounter – and encouraging performance – was lost amongst the furore surrounding that red balloon.

Journalists, match officials, and former referees were left to scramble through the rule book to work out whether the goal should have been chalked off, as confusion reigned at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Anfield Talk 17 October @ 12:10 PM EST
Darren Bent staked a further claim for a place in England's World Cup squad as Sunderland heaped further misery on Liverpool.
However, he did so in controversial circumstances as the visitors were left fuming over the fifth-minute strike which secured the Black Cats' first victory over a 'top four' team since their return to the Barclays Premier League. Click to continue reading...

Ferguson Issues Wiley Apology

Blog United 10 October @ 08:39 AM EST

Alex Ferguson has issued an apology over comments made about Alan Wiley's fitness following United's disappointing 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

United salvaged a point from the match thanks to an injury time own goal from Anton Ferdinand but rather than point the spotlight at his own players, Ferguson let rip at Alan Wiley claiming he was ‘unfit' and questioned the referee's timekeeping.

The Wednesday Wonder: Two Black Cats

Premiership Talk Blog 07 October @ 03:35 PM EST

Patience is a virtue, and for two of the Premier League's best players, that patience has finally paid off. The crazy thing about it all? These two players are on the same team! And the lucky team is Sunderland.

It was just last season that Sunderland were in the heat of the relegation battle.

EPL Week 7: A Look Back

Soccer By Ives 05 October @ 11:04 AM EST

By TRAVIS CLARK

The highly anticipated clash of Chelsea and Liverpool turned out to be somewhat of a letdown Saturday, as Chelsea's defense reigned supreme. Even without Petr Cech, the Blues kept Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres in check all afternoon. John Terry made sure his English counterpart had no sight of goal all afternoon, all the while ensuring Torres couldn't get a shot off.

The Weekend That Was

Ginge Talks The Footy 05 October @ 08:51 AM EST
It was a cool and rainy weekend where I live, which set the tone nicely for watching a lot of Premier League football. Not that I need an excuse to watch matches, but when there is no reason to go outside, it just makes it that much easier to bunker down and ignore the world.
When the final whistle blew at Goodison, my first reaction to Everton's 1-1 draw with Stoke was frustration. Click to continue reading...

Chelsea back on top (EPL roundup)

The Beautiful Game (2) 05 October @ 05:01 AM EST
After a slip last week against Wigan, it didn't take long for the Blues to regain the Premiership lead. Didier Drogba turned from goalscorer to playmaker and Chelsea handed Liverpool a 2-0 defeat, the Reds third loss of the season.
The reason Carlo Ancelotti's team isn't in a tie for first is because Manchester United laid a stinker at home against Sunderland, but managed a 2-2 draw thanks to Anton Ferdinand's (right) last-gasp own goal. Click to continue reading...

I watched Ferdinand's stoppage time own goal with a distinct sense of déj vu. Ferdinand’s Own Goal a Sign of Man U’s Power

English Premier league 03 October @ 03:25 PM EST

I know, I know, it sounds silly. Anton Ferdinand puts in an own goal and gives Manchester United a draw (which allows them to stay atop the EPL rankings) and that somehow exhibits Man U's power? It does. Let me show you.

The solution to the above question is simple. You sign his Croatian counterpart Niko Kranjcar.

Unlike last year, when summer transfer deadline day saw some records broken and millions upon millions of pounds change hands, things were a lot quieter this time around.

2009/2010 Barclays Premier League Transfer News: What An AntiClimax!

Thanks to all those who had followed The Flat Back Four on Twitter today. To say that we had a great time chatting and tweet-ing about possible transfer moves would be stretching it a bit. In fact, it was quite the opposite.
