Are you looking at Major League Soccer's all-time leader in goals and assists? Not yet you
aren't ... but Landon Donovan certainly may have both marks in pocket before it's over.
Our series on the US at the World Cup continues with the second part of our look at the 1998
World Cup. You can read more about US World Cup appearances in 1930 (part 1), 1930 (part
2), 1934, 1950, the 1950-1990 drought, 1990, 1994, 1998 (part 1) and 1998 (part 2)
Putting 1998 in the past
The US had been humiliated at the 1998 World Cup, its poor performance on the field—one goal
scored in three losses— mirrored by acrimony and dissent off the field.
Please, enough with the FC's. This goes for you too, ACSTL. It's already tired and played. We have
official nicknames in this country. If you want to be traditional, call yourselves the Tigers or
the Crimson or whatever. Leave the FC for the UK.

The Galaxy should wear white shirts with blue shorts at home.
With a little help from the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, here's a list I've compiled
of the all-time leading goalscorers in American outdoor soccer leagues, going back to the
primordial soup days.
Player Goals Archie Stark 253 Johnny Nelson 223 Giorgio Chinaglia 193 Dave Brown 189 Bill Patterson
152 Andy Stevens 150 Jerry Best 138 Bart McGhee 137 Harold Brittain 135 Jaime Moreno 132 Bobby
Blair 131 Werner Nilsen 131 Alan Willey 129 Karl-Heinz Granitza 128 Tommy Florie 126 Jeff
Cunningham 124 Tec White 124 Ron Futcher 119 Bart Patenaude 118 Ante Razov 114 Jason Kreis 108 Mike
McLeavey 108 Herbert Carlson 107 Paul Child 102 Illja Mitic 101 Taylor Twellman 101 Steve David 100
Archie Stark was a star of the Bethlehem Steel FC teams that were powerful in
the 1920s.
Remember when Ante Razov was dropping hat tricks like he was a magician? Me neither. Seems like
ages since the guy has played yet he's only been retired...wait. Is he retired? Where the hell is
Ante Razov?

Its a new week and a new month. Last week we started a new series that looks at the current
state of each Major League Soccer club. First we took a gander at the expansion club in
Philadelphia and then we began a look at the rest of the league starting with the Chicago Fire.
The United States World Cup Team in South Africa will have a distinctly Chicago Fire flavor.
In fact, one can make a strong case that the Fire has had more influence on this squad than any
other single club has since five members of St. Louis Simpkins-Ford were on the 1950 US World Cup
roster that upset England in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
With two penalty kick goals this weekend, Landon Donovan became just the sixth MLS player to top
100 career goals. As recently as 2008 there were only three players who had reached this plateau -
Jaime Moreno, Ante Razov and Jason Kreis.
The next player with a decent chance of reaching 100 goals is Edson Buddle.

Kenn links to MLSsoccer.com so I don't have to. It's not that I'm boycotting Major League Soccer
Soccer, really, it's just that it frightens and confuses me. Like the iPad, or local news.

Here's edition number two:
Fifteen years ago this week
*The Galaxy played their first-ever game April 13, 1996 at the Rose Bowl.
Back then I was working for the LA Times in Ventura County and was still a fan rather than
sitting in the press box.
For reasons that are as mysterious as the whereabouts of Ante Razov, I loathe the German national
team. But today for reasons that are as plain and superficial as the Hilton sisters I am rooting
for them to defeat Spain in their World Cup semi-final match.
Why? Because a Netherlands-Germany final is what the world needs.
Last year I compiled a list of everyone who had scored more than one Superliga goal. Since the
Superliga site is nearly impossible to get useful stats from, I decided to expand things a bit this
year.
9/2/10 Update: With his brace in the final, Morelia's Miguel Sabah wrote his name into the record
books, climbing into a tie for most career goals and most goals in a single tournament.
