2011 Summer Preview: Barnet transfer for Rooney, Tottenham's new sponsors, Chelsea's unsackable
manager and more - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Thanks to Twitter, the green light for the "Silly Season" to start has been well and truly lit.
As we head for the sun, tabloids and social media sites are preparing to fill inches with nonsense,
here are a few of the stories which will have us pulling our hair out.
Chasing after his former self, not the opponent
Carling Cup returns to the menu as the victors of tonight's game will seal their path into the
semi final of this competition. It won't be so easy to win this year's competitions, well, compared
to our run last season. Apart from Manchester City, there's still Manchester United, Chelsea and
Liverpool still in this competition.

Arshavin. Speaking to Sport-Express, the Dutchman explained that the midfielder is not one to run
and fight throughout the whole ...
Former Arsenal fullback Lee Dixon believes the future of Andrey Arshavin could be away from Arsenal
as his body language on the pitch shows that he is not a happy man. The Englishman who just ...

Samir Nasri has been included in Arsenal's squad despite reportedly being on the verge of a
move to Manchester City. The Gunners will be without suspended duo Gervinho and AlexSong while
defenders Johan Djourou, Kieran Gibbs (both hamstring) and Armand Traore(groin) are not
available either.

Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin revealed manager Arsene Wenger asked his players to be
determined and ready from the first minute against Leeds which indeed was the case at Elland Road.
Speaking to his personal website, the ...
Arsenal comfortably beat Wigan today, and it looked to me that this was the best team he could
pick. The changes from the Leeds game were possibly obvious, but as far as i was concerned were
spot on. Van Persie came in for Chamakh. Andrey Arshavin, Denilson and Nicklas Bendtner were
dropped in favour of Theo [.
Koscielny the wall
It's hard not to enjoy that is it not? Now, after more than 12 hours have passed since the game
ended, I'm still buzzing. It belies the fact that I had only 4 hours of sleep in the past 48 hours.
With the match starting at 3:45am in Malaysia and between work, there was no choice for me.
Another season of high hopes and eventual frustration for Arsenal has ended. Another season of,
at times enterprising football, but ultimately poor defending and poor decisions has ended with the
Gunners going six seasons without a trophy.
The chance of finishing the season without a trophy looked very unlikely as Arsenal went into
the Carling Cup Final as massive favourites against Premier League Minnows (and ultimately
relegation fodder) Birmingham City.
Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin confessed the Gunners could have won yesterday's game against
Newcastle even after Gervinho's red card with 15 minutes to go. Speaking to his personal website,
the Russia International explained that it was ...
Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin believes the Gunners have to change their style of football
after they sold Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri during the summer transfer window. Speaking to
Russian newspaper Sport, the 30-year old was ...
Arsene Wenger wrapped up as many as five quality signings on the transfer deadline day but not
all members of his squad are feeling confident about the future ahead.
Russian winger Andrei Arshavin, for one, believes that the Gunners' failure to sign a defensive
midfielder such as Rennes' Yann M'Vila not only left the Arsenal midfield incomplete, but also
prevented Wenger from compensating for the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri.
Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin believes fatigue played a role in Saturday's English Premier
League game, against Fulham. Speaking to his official website, the Russia International explained
that the tough mid-week Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund ...
His performances may not be on par with those of Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo but Robin van
Persie is quickly beginning to realize the potential that has made him one of Arsenal's greatest
assets. In fact, based on current form, one can make a case the Dutchman being the club's most
valuable player (MVP).
This was Arsene Wenger's description of our performance.
We had both a good result and a good performance. We had quality in our attitude, spirit and
focus.
Yes, in the end of the day it is the result that matters but on this day, we got all the
concoction right.
According to Arsene Wenger, Andrey Arshavin has been suffering from a 'blip' in form but will be
back to his best sooner rather than later. Indeed, the boss reckons he is already on his way back
but just lacking in confidence. Despite his torrid form he has still contributed a lot to the
team this season with seven [.
Arsenal 3 Wigan 0
It might seem very odd to say this, but the last three Arsenal performances have to me indicated a
team in form. It might seem odd because, frankly, the two performances before these three games -
the first game against Leeds, and the match at Portman Road, were two of the worst Arsenal
performances I can remember in ages and ages.
Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1 to stay five points clear of Arsenal, who won 2-1 against
Everton, at the top of the Premier League.
Wayne Rooney had scored just one league goal from open play prior to his first-minute strike
against Villa. The England striker controlled Edwin van der Sar's clearance with delightful ease
before rattling in a dipping shot.
Another briliant header by Koscielny
If there is a more atrocious refereeing display this season, I want you to tell me so. For this
was game where Arsenal not only have to up against a spirited Everton side but also had to contend
with the bias calls from referee, Lee Mason. It was like there are 2 separate set of laws when it
comes to interpreting what we and Everton did.
Arsenal midfielder Andrey Arshavin confessed Louis Saha's offside goal made life difficult for the
Gunners and that it should have been disallowed. Speaking to his personal website, the Russian
declared how the Gunners knew that it ...
No one would envy the task facing him tonight
After all the talk and the discussion, it's finally going to happen tonight. It has been debated
to death around the blogs as well as the mass media on how each team are going to approach the game
and what are the obvious dangers. This is what we signed up for when we enter the Champions
League.

Arsenal sees them upset Pep Guardiola's Barcelona at the Emirates. Both of Arsenal's goals came in
the last quarter of the game, giving the Gunners a 2-1 [.
In looking at the Manchester United 2-0 defeat of Arsenal in the FA Cup quarterfinals, there were a
number of heroes for United on the day - Edwin van der Sar stood on his head in goal; Nemanja Vidic
and Chris Smalling were a presence in United's backline; Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez were
constant pests to Arsenal's backline.
Here's a quick round-up of yesterday's international matches, featuring 2 Gunner captains:
*All matches below were part of UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifying
Hungary 0 Netherlands 4: Pretty routine win for the Oranje. RvP played a full
90 minutes and got himself a goal and an assist on Kuyt's goal.
I hope that clip of Cesc in the new Spanish film Torrente 4 has you prepared for the
randomness that will be today's blog post.
What better place to start than on Arsenal goalkeepers? Jens Lehmann made his triumphant Arsenal
return with the Reserves team who played Wigan today.
The Sun in the early hours this morning is reporting that Roman Abramovich wants more "thrilling
and sexy football" and intends to bankroll another £80m this summer to bring in players to three
areas that have been identified that need bolstering. The three positions are:
- A creative midfielder
- A flying winger
- A solid right back.

- Time for the captain to lead the team (R)
Amidst the confusion surrounding the supposedly confirmed sale of Cesc Fabregas, let's not
forget that there's a Premier League match today. For the next 8 months or so, football will form
the crux of many conversations with many of those surrounding what Arsenal does.
Squad sheets: Arsenal v Liverpool
Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool provided one of the horror moments of last season for Arsenal when
they equalised in the 102nd minute at the Emirates, and they might not get a better chance to
inflict more pain. Arsène Wenger is under siege, with his problems taking in a clutch of injuries
and suspensions, Samir Nasri, and the difficulties in making signings.
- Time to get off the bench
The league campaign continues with the visit of Liverpool. It'll be the first home game of the
domestic campaign and it is always important to start on the right foot. Arsenal were the best away
team in the league last season but ultimately even then we finished 12 points off the top.
Arsenal's defence at full stretch
Three points in the bag. Move up to 11th in the league (still early days to consider any
significance of the table). No injuries suffered during the game. No red card accrued during the 90
minutes. Andrey Arshavin opened his accounts for the season and another clean sheet kept by
Wojciech Szczesny (not that it was his effort alone, those in front of him helped of course).
One of the best players for Arsenal on Saturday, midfielder Andrey Arshavin was full of praise for
Swansea City and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny after the game. Speaking on his official website

Limbering up for the next challenge
Normally that would mean that the team is flying. Not necessarily in a physical form but in
terms of form, confidence and results. A good continuous run of positive results would probably
equate to a team in flying condition. In this instance, I'm referring "full flight" to the numbers
and quantity.
When Robin Van Persie stalled on his Arsenal contract talks earlier in the month, there were
tremors felt everywhere. Clubs were perking up their ears, waiting for new development. Arsenal
fans were quaking....dismayed that yet another "home-grown" star is on the verge of leaving.
Arsenal has not been known to keep their stars with huge wage packages and therefore it will not be
hard to imagine the departure of the Dutch star come end of this season.

Mathieu Valbuena's getting too old for this merde
Speaking as a partially-inebriated neutral, Arsenal's narrow victory over Marseille at the Stade
Velodrome wasn't in the politest terms possible very easy on either the eye or the frontal
lobes.
