Originally uploaded by C.G.B.
Nothing else to talk about, so I will fall back on this for today. Thankfully, it's La Liga preview
tomorrow, so I won't have to spend ages on another list.
This list is the 50 best players now. It therefore will not include any has beens who's talent
might be rekindled (sorry R10) and no wonderkids who remain just that.
For the last two seasons, FC Barcelona have been going gaga over Diego Armando Maradona II Lionel
Messi. But there is another soldier in this highly talented and exceptional Barcelona army and we
are not talking about Ronaldinho here. Instead we are talking about a certain Andres Iniesta, the
Albacete-born Barcelona player who has been [.
Another Spaniard is linked with a move to Anfield, this one, unlike David Villa, won't cost the
moon on a stick.... Spain's Euro 2008 squad is blessed with an abundance of midfield talent such as
Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Santi Carzola, Marco Senna and Cesc Fabregas. However, there is
another young starlet in the squad [.
Chelsea have lost out once again in their bid to woo another major international star to Stamford
Bridge. Goal.com reports that that Spain midfielder Andres Iniesta has signed a new contract with
Barcelona that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2014. At 23, Iniesta has already established himself
as one of the key pieces in [.
I wanted to get this post up sooner, but I've been blog-less for the past few days as a result of a
beer-filled long weekend out of town. I did watch the final on Sunday, though, and although I was
cheering for Germany, I can't say I'm disappointed that Spain won -- they were the best team both
over the course of the tournament and in the final itself.
Spain 2-1 Greece
Ok, I realize that this was an essentially meaningless game, with Greece already eliminated and
Spain having won the group. But I still thought it was great, for one simple reason: Xabi Alonso
wearing the captain's armband for Spain. That is awesome. (Yes, I am easily pleased.
Just when Andrea Pirlo was showing his best form in a while, against France, he picks up his
second yellow card and misses his match against Spain. In the absence of Italy's medio, you have to
fancy Spain's chances. Previous meetings have been exercises in futility for Spain whose fragile
psyche will be tested by the Italians who thrive on opportunism.
Spain, then, are the European champions and, with the benefit of hindsight, it's difficult to argue
a case against them winning it. Euro 2008, however, was just like that in many respects. How many
times did you sit down in front of the television and think, "Well, they're definitely going
to win it"?
Spain 4-1 Russia
Oh, Spain. This is why I both love you and hate you: the brilliant attacking play, the significantly less than brilliant defending... It was all sort of reminiscent of the World Cup in 2006, when they beat Ukraine 4-0 in their opening match, won their group easily, and then proceeded to get beaten by France at the first knockout stage.
