PASADENA, Calif. - The U.S. men's national team started its Gold Cup final almost as good as anyone could have imagined, but a two-goal lead to start the game wasn't enough against its most bitter rival.

The United States lost its second consecutive Gold Cup final to Mexico, falling 4-2 in a thrilling match played in front of a sold out crowd of 93,420 at the Rose Bowl on Saturday night.

Mexico has emerged from group play as the team to beat at Gold Cup 2011.

After thumping El Salvador and Cuba by a score of 5-0, the Mexicans closed out Group A in style with a 4-1 win over a Costa Rican side that was seen by many as the second strongest side in the group.

In 24 hours we'll know how the latest edition of CONCACAF's best rivalry went down as another US-Mexico Gold Cup finale is upon us. With previews and analysis filling the internet there's a number of issues and storylines being written about.

USA-MEXICO SERIESALL-TIME

• The U.S. has a 15-31-11 all-time record against Mexico in 57 meetings; however, since 2000 the U.S. has a 10-4-2 advantage in the series.
• At home, the U.S. has a 13-7-9 record including a 9-1-2 mark since 2000. The 2009 loss in the Gold Cup final was the first defeat in the last 12 meetings in the U.

To say that the 2011 Gold Cup has been a turbluent ride for the Mexican National Team may be something of an understatement.

Five players including three starters left the team after testing positive for the substance Clembuterol. All the while, forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez has helped lead Mexico to victory time and time again while "El Tri" played to legions of loyal fans in their traveling tour across the United States.

The US tied 1-1 with Mexico last night in Jurgen Klinsmann's first game in charge of the national team.

First impressions were not positive as the U.S. were dominated by Mexico in the first half. Klinsmann sent the U.S. out in a 4-2-3-1 formation, but the U.S. could do little offensively in the first half, failing to even get a shot on goal.

The Jurgen Klinsmann era has now officially been logged into the history books. Although the US did not really do anything of substance in the first half, an influx of youthful subs in the second half put Mexico back on their heels. The US would find an equalizer, and were really unlucky not to get the win.

"During his time as the head coach of our Men's National Team he led the team to a number of accomplishments, but we felt now was the right time for us to make a change.

It's been a summer marred by disappointment for U.S. Soccer. Most notably there was the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final collapse against Mexico by the U.S. Men's National Team and the loss to Japan in the Women's World Cup Final by the U.S. Women's National Team.

But while those two defeats may have garnered the most attention, the youth national teams on the men's side were also falling well short of expectations.
