Tomorrow the US looks to at least equal their 2002 World Cup finish by advancing to the quarter
finals. Already the US has done more than was expected by finishing at the top of Group C. By
winning the group, the US does avoid a rematch of the 2002 quarterfinal against Germany, but
instead will be facing Ghana who beat the US at the last World Cup.
Unsurprisingly, Ghana lead the list of nominees for the African Footballer of the
Year
The short list of nominees up for the African Footballer of the Year have been making their way
into the press this morning. Not surprising that Ghana lead the list along with some other
predictable nominations .
Spanish mag Don Balon has announced their much anticipated Top 100 Young Players for the year. I
think, anyway the following is the list which is leaking across the web and being sourced by
various news-type outlets, so it's as good as silver in my book. Two rules: must be born after
January 1, 1989 and they must be flippin' brilliant at football.
Or: who will earn a big money move to Bayern Munich and see his career nosedive as a result?
That's Lukas Podolski, the last and technically only recipient of the FIFA Young Player Award at
a World Cup. Since the last World Cup back home he's seen his stock drop further than the Lehmann
Brothers at club level while still scoring goals galore for country.
Inspired by a sense of playing for all of Africa, Ghana's Black Stars became the first Africans
to win a World Cup match on their home continent by downing Serbia 1-0 in their opener Sunday.
Asamoah Gyan blasted in a penalty kick in the 84th minute after a handball by Serbian Zdravko
Kuzmanovic, then joined in a dance-filled team celebration that saw even a security guard hug
Gyan.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Diego Forlan, Asamoah Gyan and Lionel Messi on the final ballot.
With all the World Cup action over and all the votes tallied, the World Cup awards can now be
handed out. And there's a lot of gold to go around. There's the Golden Ball for best player (plus
silver and bronze for runners up), the Golden Boot for top scorer, the Golden Glove (just one, this
'aint boxing) for best goalkeeper and the not so golden but still prestigious Best Young Player
award (the Golden iPod?
New pretenders emerged in the likes of Germany's Jerome Boetang and Mexico's Javier Hernandez in
South Africa. However, the likes of Wayne Rooney, Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka faltered as
their nation's endured dissapointing, early exits. Dirk Kuyt was a creative hub in the wheels of
Holland's charge to the final, and let's not forget the sprited, productive turn outs from Ghana's
Kevin-Prince Boateng, who looks like he could leave doomed Portsmouth for a top flight club
soon.
The News Of The World is reporting this morning that Newcastle United are interested in

Whereas the Puskas Award requires but a singular moment of magic, this award goes to those who
managed a few more strung out through twelve long months. Therefore the names are all household,
with the one having the greatest pull perhaps the clear outsider of the competition, Andre Ayew
Pops won the inaugural edition way back in 1992.
Everyone knows about Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba and Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o. The superstars of
African football. Most will know about Mali's Fredi Kanoute and Seydou Keita too. You don't need
WorldCupBlog to tell you about them. So we thought we'd compile a list of 10 players to watch at
the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, featuring talented youngsters and other players with slightly lower
profiles than those listed above.

Guingamp gained a valuable point away at AC Arles Avignon on Friday night, the result leaves
them two points clear of the relegation zone.
Guingamp are now unbeaten in their last 3 games and have found form exactly when it was
needed.
Arles took the lead in the 65th minute when Andre Ayew put them in-front, but a great strike
from Thibault Giresse in the 69th minute was enough to secure the point.

play very similarly to they way they did in 2006.
This game sees us pass the halfway point of the group stages. By the end of Friday, we'll have
lost half of the teams, and we'll know the shape of the knockout stages. Once we reach the knockout
stages, most of the contrasting games (whether in ability, age or experience) will be over, and the
main contrasts we're likely to get between opponents are playing style and location.

his father's creative instincts.

European's footballing elite, and Gary Lineker, helped bring the Champions League group stage to
fruition in Monaco on Thursday afternoon. It was quite an event, one that could have taken place in
under 20 minutes rather than the hour-plus afforded.
Either way, it's finalized. Chelsea, meanwhile, are probably feeling fairly good following a
favorable draw.
Chelsea tasted defeat for the first time this season when they were beaten by Manchester City
yesterday. A Carlos Tevez goal-the only one on the day, was enough to sink the blues and give them
something to think about ahead of European action this week.

Top 100 Young Players in World Football, 2010 (Don Balon) is a post from: Just Football
Here on Just Football we like to keep a keen eye on youth talent in
football and emerging young stars of the game, as we did at the Under-20 World Cup in 2009 and the
Under-19 European Championships in France earlier this year.
CAF has released its shortlist for the African Football of the Year with a number of regular
star players missing from the list. This year's award will be hotly contested by Chelsea's Didier
Drogba, Inter's Samuel Eto'o and Sunderland's Asamoah Gyan.
Both Drogba and Eto'o had stellar performances with their clubs, however, it is Gyan's World Cup
exploits that is the highlight of them all.
First in a rather ambitious series of alliterative footballers. Starting, as you'd expect with
the letter A. This was a relatively easy letter, I think I may struggle once I get to "your Qs and
your Xs" of this world.. Nonetheless, here we go...

conquering Europe.
