So, as I promised earlier, I've done some research on the other countries in England's World Cup
qualifying group and even though qualifying is months away, I wanted to come out with a
guide/primer/preview of sorts of England's competition in Group 6 while the topic was still fresh
in people's minds:
1.
England vs. Russia, New Wembley - London
The Russians go to England in what is easily the match of the day for Group E. I originally thought
that this wasn't a must-win for the English, but now I'm beginning to have second thoughts. Neither
Russia nor Croatia have a very difficult schedule ahead of them, though the Croatians have to go to
London on the last day of qualifying.
- Let me first say that it would not bother me even for a second if Gerrard 'retired' from
international play. Yes, I know that would never happen, since Stevie-G loves his country nearly as
much as he loves his club, but one can dream, can't they? At least I hope so. Anyhow, it looks as
if England boss Steve McClown has finally seen the light and decided to give Gerrard the kind of
freedom alloted him at LFC.
England's chances of qualifying for Euro 2008 now lie in the hands of their victors as Steve
McClaren's men were defeated 2-1 away to Russia.
Their call for lionheart performances and Terry Butcher-esq heroics went unanswered, even after it
had appeared Wayne Rooney had provided the moment of inspiration to win the match in Moscow.
Instead, it was a Russian substitute who turned the game on its head.
I've already touched on this issue in previous posts (see "Russia-2, England-1...Is Anyone Really
Surprised?" and "Euro 2008--England's Prospects"), but as the most crucial international break this
year is now upon us, I thought I'd go over it for the last time and give all the permutations that
need to happen.
I, personally, do not think the Three Lions will go to Austria-Switzerland next June for Europe's
highest international competition as anything but spectators or tourists.
