The World Cup has come and gone but it isn't hard to beckon back a year and a half ago and remember that a man who ultimately was left off the World Cup roster was, for a brief respite in time, the toast of the proverbial town. American Sacha Kljestan needed just seven minutes to score his first goal for Belgian champion Anderlecht in its 3-1 win over Welsh club FC The New Saints in their UEFA Champions League third-round qualifying match.

Anderlecht 1 - KAA Gent 0 Sacha Kljestan made his debut for Anderlecht in the Belgian Super Cup on Sunday. Kljestan started for his new club, with Cheikhou Kouyate getting the game's only goal in the 30th minute. This is the 9th time Anderlecht have won the Super Cup, with the league champion facing the Belgian Cup winner.

Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan appears to be the latest yank heading across the Atlantic as he closes in on a deal with Belgian club Anderlecht.

As I begin this post, Sacha Kljestan has just scored in his debut for Anderlecht. The Belgian club are playing a Champions League qualifier against Welsh Premier League side The New Saints, and while the competition is hardly strong (The New Saints' home ground has a capacity of 2,000, and the club was called "Total Network Solutions FC" until four years ago), an American scoring in European competition is still rare enough to be notable.

Following his Super Cup goal for new club Anderlecht, Sacha Kljestan has now scored in his first opportunity in Champions League play. It took 7 minutes. Kljestan had the opening goal in Anderlecht's 3-1 Third Round Qualifying win over The New Saints on Tuesday. Jonathan Legear made it 2-0 in the 18th before the Welsh club pulled a goal back at the 2,000-capacity Park Hall.

Yesterday Kljestan gave a short interview about his goal in the CL qualifier which was published by a few different media outlets (different articles based on the same interview) in Flemish media.

One the second day of Champions League playoff first legs, Bundesliga side Werder Bremen took the advantage with a strong second half performance, scoring three times en route to a 3-1 win over Serie A club Sampdoria.

Belgian club Anderlecht was also in action, traveling to Belgrade and notching two away goals in a 2-2 draw with FK Partizan.

Five Champions League playoffs were decided yesterday, and five more will be decided today. Winners advance to the Champions League group stage (or: the Champions League proper, if we're being honest) while losers fall through the trap door into the Europa League, screaming "Aaaaarrrrghhh!" all the way down.
