It's Super Sunday due to the two big EPL North London-Manchester games, but there's also a
couple interesting La Liga matchups and an relevant Eredivisie matchup today:
Super Sunday, Jan 22

Kids day at the Amsterdam Arena
After a KNVB cup match between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar was suspended because a fan ran on to the
pitch and attacked AZ's keeper, Ajax were able to replay the match, but with one caveat: only kids
(and a few supervisors) would be allowed into the Amsterdam Arena.
As if there was not enough drama the last time Ajax and AZ Alkmaar played.
AZ advanced to the quarterfinals of the Dutch Cup with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Ajax in
their rescheduled round of 16 match on Thursday morning. A second-half penalty kick goal would be
the decisive finish in a game that saw each team take and squander leads.
The KNVB Beker (Dutch Cup) clash between Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkmaar, which was suspended due
to an attack on AZ keeper Esteban Alvarado in the initial encounter, was completed today in the
Amsterdam ArenA with the home side going down to a 3-2 defeat.
Siem de Jong gave Ajax the lead as early as the 10th minute only for the visitors to restore
parity fourteen minutes later through Maarten Martins.
The January 19th replay between Jozy Altidore's AZ and Ajax will be a romping room indeed, as
children will be comprising 85% of the audience at Amsterdam ArenA. At this point, Ajax are
basically telling schools to bring all the kids for the afternoon do-over. I may need to go witness
this for myself.

You may remember, not so very long ago, when the KNVB Cup match between Ajax and Alkmaar had to
be abandoned after just 38 minutes when Alkmaar 'keeper Esteban Alvarado was red-carded (it was
later rescinded) for knocking a drunken pitch-invader on his arse and then belting the living
daylights out of the 19-year old hoodlum as he sprawled on the turf.
Defend the referee or defend AZ Alkmaar keeper Esteban?
In case you missed it, things got pretty heated at the Amsterdam ArenA last night. In the 37th
minute, when Ajax were up 1-nil in the Dutch Cup, an Ajax fan ran on to the pitch and attacked AZ
Alkmaar goalkeeper Esteban. The Costa Rican keeper, seeing the threat of a 19-year-old hooligan
coming his way, retaliated.
What else is there to say? If you don't know what I'm talking about, here it is from tonight's KNVB
Cup match at Amsterdam ArenA: the hooligan field invasion that spawned the red card to AZ keeper
Estaban Alvarado that made Gertjan pull his team off that saw this contest suspended with Ajax up
1-0 a few minutes before intermission.
AZ Alkmaar's Dutch Cup match with Ajax pitted two of the Netherlands' top teams against each
other and figured to produce some fireworks. Just not like this.
With Ajax leading 1-0 in the 36th minute, a fan raced from the stands at Amsterdam ArenA and
went after AZ goalkeeper Esteban, who defended himself by kicking the fan on the ground.

The equation is simple really. Make mincemeat out of Dinamo Zagreb in Zagreb, and bribe Madrid

three goalkeepers ought to be enough, one would think?

Ajax starlet Danzell Gravenberch is attracting the attention of Manchester United and Liverpool, it
has been claimed.
The 17-year-old striker is coming to the end of his contract at the Amsterdam Arena and is
reportedly prepared to listen to offers from elsewhere.
According to reports, both Sir Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish have identified Gravenberch as a
potential acquisition and a move to United or Liverpool could be on the cards.
AZ Alkmaar settled for a tie on the road at Amsterdam Arena while Helmond Sport would score two
goals in second half stoppage time to secure a road point following Charles Kazlauskas' opener.
Liverpool look likely to have to accelerate their interest in Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen if
they wish to ensure the Danish youngster ends up at Anfield.
The Reds are known to be tracking the 19-year-old and have repeatedly been linked with a bid for
his services, although Ajax has remained adamant that Eriksen will not leave the Amsterdam ArenA.

Edwin van der Sar's testimonial evening at the Amsterdam Arena last night was a three-pronged
affair, with the festivities opening with a match between Ajax U13s and Manchester United U13s,
with Poppa van der Sar's son Joe turning out for United.
Secondly, an Ajax '95 side took on Holland '98 with Marc Overmars scoring the only goal of the
game for the Amsterdammers, and a bit of a beaut it was too.
By Eric Beard, finally concluding my Ajax Experience series.
The Ajax vs AZ Alkmaar match at Amsterdam ArenA was on Sunday, which meant the flight from
Amsterdam would have to be delayed until Monday evening. One more day. Well, classes could
wait.
It was a weekday, not to mention our 5th day in the city, so no partying or anything of that
nature was on the cards.
A summertime experiment to manage rising expectations - a note from the

It has been just over a month since I left the shores of Barcelona and my five months of travels
and studies throughout Europe ended. The experiences from my trip will never leave, from playing
calcio with children in Cinque Terre to kicking around at Praia do Guincho with Dominic Vieira to
being a part of the Barcelona Independent Fútbol League on Saturdays for the Ovella Negra pub team
(my transfer fee was an Estrella Damm) to seeing the Amsterdam ArenA with the best Ajax fan
around.

Liverpool have reportedly missed out on Ajax starlet Ricardo Kishna, according to reports.
The Reds had been in contact with the player's representatives over a potential move to Anfield,
but publication Algemeen Dagblad is now claiming that the Eredivisie outfit have fended off the
interest from England.
Never before in the history of the Eredivisie has the fixture list computer churned out a final
matchday programme containing such compelling encounters. Whatever the relegation hurly-burly in
the east of Holland comes to, it will always fade in comparison to the Rumble in the Amsterdam
ArenA between Ajax and FC Twente, where the winner takes the title, no strings attached.
Before this weekend's action, the MNT Blog cited three sets of games to keep an eye on involving
U.S. internationals. Here's how they fared, and what it now means:
OGUCHI ONYEWU - DUTCH EREDVISIEMay 1 results
Twente 4, Willem II 0Heerenveen 1, Ajax 2
With the home victory, Twente remains in the driver's seat to collect their second consecutive
league title.
While a host of U.S. internationals are in action abroad this weekend - many facing relegation
challenges in England - there are three sets of results to keep a close eye on, including a
potential championship decider, a fight for an unprecedented berth in European competition, and a
chance to put to rest a relegation battle.

Dutch giants Ajax have signalled their intention to keep hold of young Danish midfielder Christian
Eriksen despite reported interest from Premier League side Liverpool.
The 19-year-old playmaker, who starred for his homeland in their recent defeat to England, has been
a consistent and impressive figure in the heart of the midfield at the Amsterdam Arena with scouts
from across Europe checking his development.
D.C. United announced today that they will play legendary Dutch side Ajax on Sunday, May 22 at
RFK Stadium. Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m. ET. Tickets will go on sale March 21st.
"We're excited to kick off our 2011 schedule of international games with one of the most honored
teams in European soccer, Ajax of Amsterdam," said United President and CEO Kevin Payne.
Washington, D.C. (March 14, 2011) - D.C. United announced today plans for the club will play an
international friendly against legendary Dutch Eredivisie side AFC Ajax on Sunday, May 22 at RFK
Stadium. Though Ajax played a 1-1 draw against the U.S. Men's National Team at RFK Stadium on May
12, 1990, this will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
Ajax starlet Christian Eriksen says Barcelona are the only club who could tempt him away from the
Amsterdam Arena at present.
The Denmark international is being linked to a host of top clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool,
whose assistant manager Sammy Lee was recently spotted casting an eye over the midfielder.

Three U.S. internationals have their Europa League future on the line today in action across
Europe.
Maurice Edu is up first, Rangers traveling to face Sporting Lisbon in the second
leg of their Round of 32 series. The teams drew 1-1 on Feb. 17 in Glasgow, an 89th minute equalizer
for the visitors landing a key away goal heading into today's encounter.
Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has this weekend returned to Amsterdam to say goodbye to his former
club and team mates at Ajax.
The Uruguayan left the Dutch side for a fee of around £22m in the January transfer window after 3
and a half years at the Amsterdam Arena.
Suarez, taking advantage of Liverpool's free-weekend and having not played in the Europa League
last week, was accompanied by his family as he watched Ajax take on VV Venlo.
EINDHOVEN, Netherlands PSV Eindhoven took the lead in the Dutch Eredivisie with a 4-1 win over NAC
Breda on Sunday after Twente could only draw. PSV and defending champions Twente were level on 50
points ahead of their respective matches, but Fred Rutten's PSV side are now out in front with 53
points.
Liverpool will this summer look to follow up their purchase of Luis Suarez from Ajax by attempting
to lure teenage playmaker Christian Eriksen to Anfield. The promising Danish international has
impressed many with his mature performances for the Eredivisie club and many have tipped the
youngster to be a big star in the future.
One of Uruguay's finest has had enough of Holland. He wants out, and soon. The man in question
is Ajax's goal scoring machine Luis Suarez, and Liverpool is dying to sign him. The problem,
however, is that Ajax are looking for at least £26 million from the Reds. The latest offer
rejected by the Amsterdam Arena outfit was for a paltry £12.
Liverpool have been told by Ajax to increase their offer for Luis Suarez to a "respectful" level if
they want to prise the Uruguayan away from the Amsterdam Arena.
The Reds are believed to have made a £12.7 million offer for the striker as director of football
Damien Comolli flew to Amsterdam on Monday hoping to meet with the player.
