In part two of our series on the formation and rise of AFC Wimbledon, we rejoin the story in the
summer of 2001. With the clubs owners having seen their attempt to move Premier League football to
Dublin rejected by the Football Association of Ireland and in turn by the FA, UEFA and FIFA, an
entrepreneur has turned up at Selhurst Park with a potential get-out for the loss-making clubs
owners.
Well, Nicklas Bendtner has walked back through the Arsenal door after his loan move to Sunderland
ended and I'm sure many Gooners would prefer it if he just strolled back out of it again.
His exit could happen too if rumours that Borussia Dortmund are set to put a £2.5m bid in for the
Dane are true, although I think that amount of money might just cover the price of his ego.
So farewell then, Kenny Dalglish. The Liverpool manager leaves the manager's position at Anfield
in a curious position, having reminded supporters of the club what winning trophies feels like it
seems scarcely credible but is nevertheless true that this year's League Cup final was the clubs
first at the new Wembley Stadium but having failed in the Premier League, where no amount of
white-washing could mask the fact that an eighth placed finish was unacceptably modest.
The Russian national team could be forgiven for treating all matches up to the 2018 World Cup
finals as a warm up for that competition. After all, the amount of money being spent on the first
tournament to be held in the country will be vast and expectations amongst the Russian public will
be accordingly high.
By tomorrow evening, half of Manchester a phrase that in itself provokes so much debate that it
is worth pointing out that it is being used for the purposes of simplicity alone will be
celebrating a Premier League championship victory. Either Manchester City or Manchester United will
be crowned as the champions of England.
Undisputed king of the Europa League Ramadel Falcao again proved his dominance in the
competition by leading Atletico Madrid to a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in this year's final. That
makes Falcao the only player to win the competition in consecutive years with two different clubs
(Porto last season).
"It's Miller time."
If I had a pound for every time I've heard that since Tennessean truck tycoon Bill Miller was
confirmed as the preferred bidder for Rangers I'd...
Well, I'd have a sizeable amount of money and I wouldn't even consider piling it all into a wager
that Rangers will now avoid liquidation.
It is fair to say that Russian Anzhi Makhachkala have been attention seeking since being bought by
billionaire Suleyman Kerimov. But this might take the biscuit. Rather than simply offering a
ridiculously large amount of money to world stars, they have taken a curious step by releasing
their own rap video containing members of the [.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish believes an 'obsession' with the Premier League has reduced the value
of winning cup competitions.
The Reds go into this Saturday's FA Cup final against Chelsea looking for a second piece of
silverware this season, having already lifted the Carling Cup in February.
But for some, Liverpool's poor league form has overshadowed these cup successes with the Anfield
club losing eight of their last 12 games in the Premier League.
Ho Hum, another home game another poor showing at Anfield.
It seems as though that can be written every week after a Liverpool home game, and that really
upsets me. Liverpool are a club with a great history and a great tradition and since 2005 I do not
get the same feeling about the club anymore.
Yes Canberra A-League Bid is about to hand $340,000 back to their community members. As early as
next week I'm hearing. We know this amount of money won't give us a team, but we also know that no
other team in the A-League had such Community funds before getting a licence, some didn't even get
it in their annual season ticket revenues.
On Tuesday, the Major League Soccer Disciplinary Committee suspended New England Revolution
midfielder Shalrie Jospeh for one game for a 'reckless challenge' that took place against FC Dallas
last weekend.
Along with the suspension, Joseph will also be fined an undisclosed amount of money.
"I didn't even think twice about it," explained Joseph in an article on the official Revolution
website.
There is, perhaps, little to surprised about regarding the decision of Steve Evans to leave
promotion-chasing Crawley Town for Rotherham United this morning. Rumours had been circulating for
the last few days that Rotherham were interested in taking him and his baggage on and even the
timing with six games of the season left to play and Crawley Town two points off an automatic
promotion place isn't a major shock.
Wenger: Bucking the odds?
When Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal in the autumn of 1996, one of his earliest moves was to
look at the wages the players of greatest importance to him were receiving, and tie them to the
club by extending their contracts under improved terms. The growth in income as a result of
improved deals for Premier League TV rights meant that the more frugal approach the club had
demonstrated in the years before were no longer going to retain the best talents.
When AVB took over in the summer and revealed that he has been asked to take the club forward for
the next three years it was clear that a complete revamp of our squad was needed. With that, it was
to be expected that the press would have a field day linking the club with plenty of names and
future signings along with continued stories of players leaving the club.
Just one of the most liked but fleeting points at present is slumber. Simply because lots of us
have operates that neglect the nature of time zones, our bodies undergo the battery, and our
overall body clocks transform awry. On account of this, we embarrassingly fall asleep whilst
talking to the boss or find ourselves shaving the lawn at dawn.
Sitting just a few days before the regular season begins, we must start taking into account that
minus some last minute roster tweaking the team is all but set until at least the Summer Window.
This is the team that Jay Heaps will lead into battle for a good portion of the season. Ultimately,
what are the goals we are looking at for this club to complete?
Chelsea these days has a reputation within football and in Europe as a big club now. Continued and
sustained qualification into the Champions League and our record in the competition has given us
that. So it's no surprise really that in recent times Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea board have
looked for big name managers with European or World experience to come and manage our club.
Come on!!!
First game after the massive thrashing we gave our version of the"noisy neighbours". I should
think that some of the euphoria and boost should still be there with the squad going into the trip
to Anfield. A part of it will no doubt be diluted by half the squad going away for what can only be
deemed as a silly time to have international matches.
It's great to open this article up when you see the headline listed on one of the news sites,
facebook or twitter knowing that the fact a Brazilian star wants a move to Chelsea. The only
problem? It will cost Chelsea £85m!!
"Hulk" has privately expressed an interest in signing for Chelsea to his agent but as per Porto's
President Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa it will cost Chelsea masses of money.
The past month has been a little crazy for managers across the Football League. Seven new
managers have been hired since January 24. QPR is on their 10th manager in the past 4.5 years.
Chelsea, their seventh. (And soon to be 8th?) Arsenal fans are in mutiny (again) against Arsene
Wenger.
What does this have to do with Fulham?
Not so long ago, in a stadium not so far away....
Arsenal have had a hard season. On the final day of the campaign they've leap-frogged their rivals
into fourth spot and secured Champions League qualification. Yet another worry has not quite
disappeared. Their captain and best player has still not signed a new contract.
Coventry City fans were in vocal and defiant mood during the 2-0 defeat at Reading yesterday.
Several rousing choruses of their signature Eton Boating Song rang out and the raw commitment that
perhaps only comes with adversity and temperatures hovering around zero degrees was on full
display. Among the targets for opprobrium were the club's owners since 2007 – Sisu Capital – a
cabal whose very mention led the comments section to combust after Ian Palmer so expertly picked
apart Coventry's parlous financial state during our recent Turmoil Week.
Over the years in the world of sport, there have been stories abound concerning the ways in which
players and coaches have found themselves embroiled in controversy surrounding tax payments, with
certain individuals keen to pay as little tax as possible, but one strange factor about all of
these stories is the reason behind the tax evasion; for people who earn so much money, why would
they risk getting into serious trouble with the tax authorities?
One rumor making the rounds in the NBA has the Philadelphia 76ers interested in Amare Stoudemire
of the New York Knicks. Although Stoudemire is off to a slow start this season, another team may
want to acquire him and surround him with better players.
That said, that team is not the Sixers.
It's the 31st January and at 2300 UK Time tonight, the transfer window closes for yet another
season and I for one will be glued to Jim White on SkySports News waiting for news on any
developments at Chelsea.
Remember this time last year? David Luiz and Fernando Torres were both signed in deals of around
£75m but I can't see Chelsea spending that amount of money again can you?
Allen Iverson was known for scoring a lot of points on the basketball court and for wearing a
lot of bling during his time away from the game. Today, he no longer plays basketball
professionally and his bling has him in trouble.
A judge in Georgia has decided to allow a jeweler to take money straight out of Iverson's bank
account at Wells Fargo.
Their Words "I had a number of very flattering offers, and a lot of teams were involved, including,
at some level, AC Milan. To be honest, the team that I was closest to going to was Borussia
Dortmund. They had just won the European Championship, Júlio César had left, and they were
interested in bringing me in.
Do you suffer from any pre-existing conditions?
Ah, that old question on the health insurance form. The one if you answer falsely you're fooked
if they find out and you need to claim, and the one if you answer truthfully are fooked anyway
because it'll make it harder to claim.
I initially filed this one under bullshit in my immensely well-organized mental
filing cabinet. It was first reported in the Daily Mail after all. That bummy rag may have
been on to something, though. In fact, they were probably dead-on.
Sincerest apologies, Mail.
Since the transfer window was brought into effect by FIFA during the 2002/03 season, football fans
throughout the UK have been glued to their televisions, computer screens and mobile phones, hoping
for news of a blockbuster signing that will transform the fortunes of their club. With the clock
ticking, cash-rich football clubs approach the looming [.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. There can be few other sets of football
supporters that have had to bear up to the sort of agony and exhilaration that the supporters of
Darlington FC have had to put up with yesterday but eventually, more than an hour after final
confirmation one way or the other of the clubs fate was due to be announced, those concerned with
saving the club emerged before the press to make the announcement that so many had hoped for:
Darlington Football Club remains alive for now, at least.
