Young Jozy (aka the player formerly known as The Boy King of New York & Jersey™) is out in
Hong Kong at the moment training with the Olympic team and whatnot. But before he left for Dim Sum
country he dished to FIFA.com about life at his new Spanish home, Villarreal.
And just in case you missed it he also wrote a lengthy post about Spanish life for the New York
Times' Goal last week which is probably the most insightful guest-blogger post I've read in a long
time.
Here's some random news out of Belgium (via Soccer Times) that is almost as random as yesterday's
"player-turned-padre" piece. It's seems that our Gooch is now their Gooch as well: Oguchi
Onyewu has been awarded Belgian citizenship, which should help him in his quest to land in a major
European league.
Apparently everybody wants a piece of Gooch, not just the bangin' bird in the photo. Exactly who I
can't say, but Soccer 365 has been in contact with his agent, Will Sherling, who says that since
the big man's Champions League appearance 24 hours ago he's received bids & overtures from France,
Spain and the BPL.
Carlos Bocanegra needs a job and his agent's talk of staying in Europe just isn't convincing to me.
He's probably being straight up but dude's just not selling it. In my mind I see 'Los walking into
his agent's office and the agent being Darren Lamb from Extras going "nothing's come in".
You may have seen that recent post over at The Original Winger about former Chivas USA and K.C.
Wizards forward Matt Taylor signing with German second division side TuS Koblenz recently. Even
more recently, Taylor himself wrote a lengthy & insightful post over there about how he came to end
up amongst the Germans and what it took to get him there.
Hello young world. I've got loads of stuff on my plate and I am going to be busier than a
one-legged man in an ass kicking contest today so the post will be brief. Not that you'd ever
expect any Spangler-esque epic's from me.
So with that I give you this piece from Jeff Carlisle on prodigal son Neven Subotic; there is more
to his story than ill-advised corn rows and a U-20's snub.
Talk about baptism by fire. The word out of Murray Park --and the mouth of Walter Smith himself--
is that Maurice Edu is expected to make his Rangers debut in this weekend's Old Firm match vs.
Celtic. Suddenly, that oft-discussed Toronto atmosphere seems like child's play.
If you were wondering what number Michael Bradley will wear at Borussia Mönchengladbach the
answer it is 26. Also if you were wondering what size to buy a Borussia Mönchengladbach kit
with Bradley's name and number on the back for me, it's large. No, make it XL since winter is
coming and I plan on eating loads of pasta's, crock pot creations and gumbo.
Ameri-cuns, f*ck yeah! Guisseppe Rossi, f*ck off.
Need further proof that American goalies are "the new black" in Europe? Even backups that haven't
even made an appearance in MLS are getting signed in Europe. Mind you in this case it is in the
Eirecom League, but their ambulances have a funny sound so in my mind it's totally Europe.
My local newspaper, the Asbury Park Press (which BTW is the poorest excuse for newspaper in New
Jersey and the nation), has a piece on local boy and former Kansas City Wizard Chris Konopka.
First they got Guzan, now Ives thinks they're getting Friedel as well. The photo says it all.
Looking at this photo I think I may cry two different types of tears. One set for sadness I feel for seeing him leave New York and a second set for the joy I feel for him to get this type of reception at his unveiling in Spain. Do us proud young man.
This morning SBI is askedreaders "if you have seen Clint Dempsey please contact SBI. He has
gone missing since returning to Fulham." TOR is asking "has anyone checked the golf
course?".
If an American scores in Belgium and there are no Yanks around to see it, does it make a sound?
That's a question I ask myself every time an American that plays abroad in any league that is not
the EPL. With the recent exception of Michael Bradley, you see those goals about as often as you
see pregnant men.
I sure did. Coloradoans, don't miss out on your chance to see our Tim Howard and his fellow Toffees
do their thing at DSG Park this Sunday. For just $12 --less than the price of a case of Coors-- you
can watch Mr. Howard stonewall your local club's scoring efforts repeatedly. I know that doesn't
sound like fun but please don't let your stadium look like it did this Sunday; our Timmy deserves
better doesn't he?
There's some talk around the interwebs about US national teamer Cory Gibbs being a target of the LA
Galaxy, who now hold the top spot on the allocation list. That's cool and all except he wants to
play for that other team that plays at the HDC.
If true that really sucks for LA because they could really use that back line help.
I just noticed that the Brad Friedel book, Thinking Outside The Box, is now listed (but not yet
available for pre-order) on Amazon.com. I'm adding to my wish list just after Footballer's
Haircuts.
Dear Brad-
On behalf of the American soccer nation, you make our expatriate footballing dreams come true.
Thanks for all the great years past and the bad, too stubborn-to-retire ones that may come in the
future.
Happy Holidays
Greg Lalas
"Once again, we are seeing a quality American player leave behind the domestic league for a
secondary European circuit." -Steven Goff, Washington Post
"Bunk" - SF, The Offside Rules
In a move that is a shock to exactly no one with a broadband connection, Soccer By Ives is the
first to report that Chivas USA keeper Brad Guzan becomes the latest American keeper to make the
move overseas. He's signed with Aston Villa and continues the great US tradition of outsourcing our
best goalies to Europe.
Here's something I hadn't seen in while. Clint Dempsey getting on both the pitch and the score
sheet for Fulham. Who do I have to pay off to get more of this? Roy Hodgson, Mohamed al-Fayed or
the Queen herself?

Did you read Steve Davis this week? Dude came with a story about Eintract Frankfurt being
interested in jumping on the Kenny Cooper train, y'know, the one that Cardiff City and Rosenborg
missed at the station. Good for him is he can A) get the deal done and B) get some playing time.
But as much as he'd gain from a move like that, I think MLS fans will lose out on seeing stud of
striker week in week out.
